Two rare excerpts of La Traviata from the famous Australia tour, in 1965, that marked the establishment of the legendary Opera couple Joan Sutherland-Luciano Pavarotti and his definitive ascension as an opera star. This is a tribute to Pavarotti's generous personality and great artistry on the sad occasion of his death. From now on this video is also a tribute to Joan Sutherland, one of the most legendary singers ever and perhaps the most consistently great singer of the past century. Opera Company of Philadelphia "Flash Brindisi" at Reading Terminal Market (April 24, 2010)
On Saturday, April 24th, the Opera Company of Philadelphia teamed up with the Reading Terminal Market Italian Festival for a large-scale "Flash Opera" event! Over 30 members of the Opera Company of Philadelphia Chorus and principal cast members of LA TRAVIATA performed the famed "Brindisi" in the aisles of Reading Terminal Market, entertaining hundreds of Philadelphians, and proving that the perfect accompaniment for all things Italian is a little Verdi! I think we had so much fun with the Puritani contest, we should try out a differnt opera. This time I choose Verdi's La Traviata, and the aria is the final cabaletta in act I, Sempre Libera. I started each one right at the introduction to the cabaletta segment. I am sure I will hear about it from the masses! But once again since we are working with video material not every soprano can be included, some sopranos such as Sills and Gruberova have videos released on commercial dvd, therefore, I am not including them. I am going to follow tradition here and use a score of 1-5 for two catagories singing/characterization. La traviata is an opera in three acts by Giuseppe Verdi set to an Italian libretto by Francesco Maria Piave. It takes as its basis the novel La dame aux Camélias by Alexandre Dumas, fils, published in 1848. This piece of music, the prelude of La traviata, is my favorite. Sorry for an extremely belated happy 76th birthday (27 June) to La Splendissima, Anna Moffo. The Brindisi (Libiamo, libiamo ne'lieti calici), from Traviata, sung by Richard Tucker and Anna Moffo in a studio recording (Stereo)...while Tucker is not particularly known for his interpretation in the role of Alfredo, he was capable (despite his colossal voice) of very lyrical, warm and beautiful singing needed for the role; needless to say, he does far more than a fantastic job here. What to say about Moffo? Simply put, the best Violetta there ever was.
