Avro Triplane 1911 (Replica)

Alliot Vernon Roe was one of Britain's most famous early pioneers and later set up the famous AVRO company. From 1910 he started designing and building a series of triplane aeroplanes. He decided on the triplane layout, rather than the more conventional monoplane or biplane, as the triplane layout provided the extra lift that he required. Four triplanes were built and provided valuable experience for later aircraft designs. Both the Avro 504 and the Tutor can trace their ancestry back to the Triplane IV. All have high aspect ration wings (meaning that the wings are much longer than they are wide - this helps to produce more lift). The Avro Triplane is a replica built by the Hampshire Aeroplane Club at Eastleigh, Southampton for the film 'Those Magnificent Men In Their Flying Machines'. During the making of this film it was found to be a very impressive flyer and so the Trustees decided that it should be acquired to add to the Collection. During the winter of 2000/1, the Avro Triplane was completely stripped down and restored. During this time the opportunity was taken to reapply the markings that the Triplane wore in 'Those Magnificent Men'. Height: 9ft 0in Length: 30ft 0in Wingspan: 32ft 0in Engine: one 105hp Cirrus Hermes II Max. The Sopwith Triplane

Northern Aeroplane Workshops has supported the Shuttleworth Collection since its inception in March 1973 by John Langham of Harrogate. Formed to perpetuate the traditional skills, associated with the construction of wood, wire and linen aircraft, whilst at the same time constructing an aircraft for the Shuttleworth Collection. Before aircraft selection could be determined, it was necessary to check on the availability of drawings and appropriate rotary engine. Only then could the construction of a Sopwith Triplane, financed by the Collection, go ahead. Led by Eric Barraclough, who worked for the Comper, Heston and Auster aircraft companies in the 1930s and 40s, the voluntary members set about construction. The triplane (G-BOCK), more usually referred to as DIXIE, due to its colour scheme, which replicates aircraft N 6290, that flew with No 8 Squadron Royal Naval Air Service, was delivered to the Collection in June 1990, where an original 130hp Clerget engine was installed. DIXIE has been a regular display aircraft since her first flight on 10 April 1992. Sir Tom Sopwith, the founder of the original aircraft company, who supported the project throughout his later life, honoured the society when he decreed that Northern Aeroplane Workshops triplane should be considered as a late production example. This is reflected in manufacturers plate in the cockpit being No 153. As the triplane came to the final stage of construction, the Collection financed a second project to build a ...

Sopwith Triplane 1916 WW1 fighter

The Vintage Aviator's Sopwith Triplane puts on a terrific display at the Wings Over Waiarapa 2011 airshow (Masterton, New Zealand) The Sopwith Triplane was a British single seat fighter aircraft designed and manufactured by the Sopwith Aviation Company during WW1. Pilots nicknamed it the Tripehound or simply the Tripe. The Triplane became operational with the Royal Naval Air Service in early 1917 and was immediately successful. The Triplane was nevertheless built in comparatively small numbers (less than 200) and was withdrawn from active service as Sopwith Camels arrived in the latter half of 1917. Flite Test - Fokker Triplane - REVIEW

Flite Test - Fokker Triplane - REVIEW This week Flite Test finally releases it's super secret, long withheld, review of the HobbyKing Fokker Triplane. This plane has been teasing us from the background of other episodes for some time now. Josh and Josh give the low down on this not so PNP airplane. They give you the tips on what to fix to make it a puppy dog (Josh Scott, insert ARF here...) of a park flyer. Josh Bixler takes it for a test flight at the end of the show. Considering it has no canopy to lose, this should be one of his best on camera flights yet, right? Oh, and to keep the director happy, subscribe, subscribe, subscribe. -Fred Provost

Sopwith Triplane (The Tripe)

The Sopwith Triplane was a British single seat fighter aircraft designed and manufactured by the Sopwith Aviation Company during the First World War. Pilots nicknamed it the Tripehound or simply the Tripe. The Triplane became operational with the Royal Naval Air Service in early 1917 and was immediately successful. The Triplane was nevertheless built in comparatively small numbers and was withdrawn from active service as Sopwith Camels arrived in the latter half of 1917. Surviving aircraft continued to serve as operational trainers until the end of the war. The Triplane began as a private venture by the Sopwith Aviation Company. The fuselage and empennage closely mirrored those of the earlier Pup, but chief engineer Herbert Smith gave the new aircraft three narrow-chord wings to provide the pilot with an improved field of view. Ailerons were fitted to all three wings. By using the variable incidence tailplane, the aircraft could be trimmed to fly hands-off. The introduction of a smaller 8 ft span tailplane in February 1917 improved elevator response. The Triplane was initially powered by the 110 hp Clerget 9Z nine-cylinder rotary engine, but most production examples were fitted with the 130 hp Clerget 9B rotary. At least one Triplane was tested with a 110 hp Le Rhône rotary engine, but this did not provide a significant improvement in performance. The prototype Triplane, serial N500, first flew on 28 May 1916, with Sopwith test pilot Harry Hawker at the controls. Within ...

Seven Fokker Dr.1 Triplanes of Jasta 11

The very rare sight of seven full-size WW1 Fokker Dr.1 Triplanes replicas in the air together. Each of these aircraft is painted to represent one of the aircraft/pilots that flew as part of Manfred von Richthofen's Jasta 11 in April 1918. As far as we know this is only the second time since 1918 that seven of these aircraft have been seen in the air together at one time (the first time was in 2007). -- www.aviationfilm.com Copyright © 2011Historical Aviation Film Unit This video material may not be reproduced in any form (except as an embedded video on any other website), without the written permission of the Historical Aviation Film Unit.

Old Kingsbury Aerodrome Fokker Dr.1 Triplane Engine Run (HD)

This is a video highlighting the engine run of a Fokker Dr.1 Triplane during the 2009 Old Kingsbury Aerodrome Spring (postponed to June 20th) Air Fair. Unfortunately, the winds were such that they were unable to fly the Triplane, but they did display the engine to the very pleased crowd. The Pioneer of Flight Museum's Dr.1 is a perfectly accurate replicate of a standard WWI Fokker Dr.1. Their Dr.1 has an original, restored, 1919 Le Rhone rotary engine producing 80hp. It was a real treat to see such an old engine come to life!

Fokker DR.1 Triplane - Grimes Field, Golden Age of Aviation Museum

A beautiful full scale replica of the Fokker DR.1 Triplane built by volunteers from the Golden Age of Aviation Museum in Bethel, PA. This aircraft features an actual LaRhone rotary engine and many other details taken from the original design. I love the smell of the castor oil from the total loss oil system as the plane taxi's by. Paint scheme is that of Lothar von Richthofen, the brother of Manfred von Richthofen (the Red Baron).

Avro Triplane Mk IV

This is an RC model of a 1912 airplane made from a modified version of the RN Model's kit. I added ailerons and a bit more vertical fin area to improve the roll response. The engine is a Cox .049 with a diesel conversion. It does not throttle very well and has more than enough power for this model. There was more wind and turbulence on this flight than normal and I had to keep the flying speed higher than usual to fight the gusts. On a calm day I can fly much lower and slower, which certainly looks more realistic.
