José José's big break came on March 25, 1970, when he represented Mexico in an international song festival, the "II Festival de la Canción Latina" (Latin Song Festival II, predecessor of the OTI Festival) with an amazing performance of the song "El Triste". The performance of the song was so impressive that caused tears, standing ovations, expressions of amazement and cheers from Angélica María, Alberto Vázquez, Marco Antonio Muñiz, the judges and the spectators in the Teatro Ferrocarrilero in Mexico City. The fact that José José got the third place shocked the audience. After the hit of "El Triste", his popular romantic ballad style mixed with a unique voice made him the star of stars in Mexico.

EL TRISTE JOSÉ JOSÉ Video original Presentación en II Festival de la Canción Latina 1970
Hace 41 años , un jovencísimo José José se presentaba en el II Festival de la Canción Latina, realizado en la ciudad de México. Era un 14 de marzo de 1970 y José José , de apenas 23 años, estaba a punto de hacer una presentación explosiva, histórica. En aquella ocasión interpretó la canción "El Triste", compuesta por Roberto Cantoral. Ante un colmado aforo, el Teatro Ferrocarrilero, un desconocido José José realizó una interpretación intensa, mágica, maravillosa. Fue como un estruendo que impactó a todos los presentes ya todos aquellos que pudieron ver dicho espectáculo en la televisión. En el recinto habían artistas renombrados de la época, músicos y gente de la farándula que quedaron absolutamente maravillados. La gente lanzaba rosas, aplaudía y al finalizar la canción muchos no se pudieron contener y se lanzaron al escenario a felicitar al nuevo ídolo. José José emanaba juventud, su voz estaba en estado puro y destilaba talento. Aquel día, increíblemente José José obtendría apenas el tercer lugar del certamen. Nadie se lo podía explicar, aun en estos días nadie se lo explica. Sin embargo ese día nacía una autentica leyenda. El primer lugar lo gano una brasileña, Claudia (Cançao de Amor e Paz). Pero realmente nadie se acuerda de eso, todos recuerdan ese festival por José José. Gente mayor que conozco me han comentado que recuerdan aun la extraordinaria presentación del que llegaría a ser llamado el Príncipe de la canción. Hace 30 años nacía un ídolo. Cristian Castro homenajeando nuevamente al "Príncipe de la Canción" Don José José, en la doceava entrega de los "Latin Grammy". Cabe destacar que los nervios y su perfeccionismo lo traicionaron, pues como podrán observar no traía puesto el audífono que usan en su totalidad todos los cantantes para no perderse y escucharse en la pista, debido a esto se perdió por un segundo en la letra de la canción, pero como el profesional que es, siguió adelante dando un increíble aunque no excelente resultado, pero aun así manejo impecablemente su majestuosa voz.
