Hip Hop and the Tunisian Revolution - A 21st Century Affair

How did hip-hop and the internet work to produce the first Arab revolution of the 21st century? Watch to find out. ------------------------------------------------ TRANSCRIPT: Those were the words of Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five in 1982. The song, titled "The Message," is considered one of the first major examples of political rap. Its lyrics ushered in decades of social commentary by hip-hop acts such as Public Enemy, who urged its listeners to "fight the power," and NWA, whose members criticized the police so frequently and harshly that their record label received a letter from the FBI. In recent years, non-political, major label artists such as Jay-Z and Rihanna have dominated the airwaves while hip-hop has become increasingly subject to commercial influences. At the same time, rap artists -- professional and amateur -- from all around the world have begun to share their tracks on the Internet. This not only means that rappers can easily share their music with potentially large audiences, but also that the political commentary found on their tracks can influence anyone with access to the net. In one North African country, this phenomenon is having a major political impact. Last month, 26-year-old unemployed university graduate Muhammed Bouazizi set himself on fire in front of a Tunisian government building. Following this bold act of defiance, a flurry of protests raged across nation. In recent years, resentment toward the country's government has been ...

The Revolution Of Tunisia 14-01-2011 ثورة تونس

The Tunisian revolution is an intensive campaign of civil resistance, including a series of street demonstrations taking place in Tunisia. The events began in December 2010 and led to the ousting of longtime President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali in January 2011.The demonstrations were precipitated by high unemployment, food inflation, corruption, a lack of freedom of speech and other political freedoms and poor living conditions. The protests constituted the most dramatic wave of social and political unrest in Tunisia in three decades and have resulted in scores of deaths and injuries, most of which were the result of action by police and security forces against demonstrators. The protests were sparked by the self-immolation of Mohamed Bouazizi on 17 December and led to the ousting of President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali 28 days later on 14 January 2011, when he officially resigned after fleeing to Saudi Arabia, ending 23 years in power.

[English subtitles!] Song of the Tunisian revolution by Tunisian Muslim Youth: El General

English subtitles ------------------------------------------------------- Allahu Akbar! Jeneral, RTM I start my talk with «Bismillah», «La ilaha illa Allah», «Muhammad Rassoul Allah». I've come alone and unarmed, but my heart is overflowing with faith. In my mind there are a lot of words (to say), a lot of dreams (to perform) and I think about many things. I beg mercy for those who died as a Shahid From Dorra (the little boy who was killed by Jews in Palestine) to Saddam Hussein (in Tunisia some people consider him to be a Shahid), For those who sacrificed themselves and called for the victory of Islam. If it were in my hands, I'd sacrifice my blood and cross the border (of Tunisia to go to war with my brothers) And I'd hold hand in hand with them and stop only when death overtook me. I'd like to go forward at least one step. Enough for us to remain motionless! Enough! What a long time we've been hiding the truth and have been forgetting about the rights of The One to Whom we worship. Arab, Muslims, with hot blood, I'm an adherent of my religion, the Qur'an and the Messenger. If you live happy life, with peace in mind, without any trouble, I want you to remember that there are others besides you, who have been crushed by life. Arab, Muslims, the same like you, who lives in humiliation. Until when will you be silent, looking at injustice? *** Allahu Akbar! The banner of Islam always comes first! Allahu Akbar! EGYPT REVOLUTION - TUNISIA REVOLUTION THE HISTORY OF NOW

Photos and videos from Tunisia and Egypt in January and February 2011 of protesters in Tunisia seeking Ben Ali ouster and Egyptian protesters seeking Mubarak resignation in central Cairo. Music from Asian Dub Foundation, "History of now" The Egyptian capital Cairo was the scene of violent chaos on Friday, when tens of thousands of anti-government protesters stoned and confronted police, who fired back with rubber bullets, tear gas and water cannons. It was a major escalation in what was already the biggest challenge to authoritarian President Hosni Mubarak's 30 year-rule. They are demanding Mubarak's ouster and venting their rage at years of government neglect of rampant poverty, unemployment and rising food prices.

"Allahuakbar!" Song of the Tunisian revolution by Tunisian Muslim Youth by El General. NOTE: This is not a Nahda Productions production and nor do we necessarily condone all the content and styles used. Rather we showcase this video which is all over the Tunisian Social media scene. It shows the raw love of the Tunisian Muslim youth for their islam. This is a sharp reposte to anyone who claims that the revolution has nothing to do with Islam. This is the CLEAREST answer possible: The youth here are talking about their love of islam, repeatedly say "Allahuakbar" and talking of Islamic liberation and jihad. Videos posted initially on Facebook.

Julian Assange's The World Tomorrow: Moncef Marzouki (E3)

In the third episode of The World Tomorrow Julian Assange speaks with Tunisia's first post-revolution leader Moncef Marzouki about the West's double standards in protecting human rights. He is a former human rights activist. During the reign of the previous President he was imprisoned and kept in solitary confinement, which he considers to be torture. Once elected Head of State, he has vowed to put an end to human rights violations in Tunisia. Marzouki recalls how he was invited to the US to talk about the human rights situation in Tunisia with a man he believed was involved in the Guantanamo controversy. Torture and the West's double standards on the issue is indeed one of the hottest topics in this episode of the show. OFFICIAL VIDEO PAGE assange.rt.com
