The Turing Test

Artificial Intelligence Computer Algorithms compete with each other in a Game Show setting where they attempt to pass the 'Turing Test' and be accepted as human. The work represents a new paradigm in computer generated filmmaking. The realistic 3D human-like digital actors were recorded in real-time directly from the display of a standard PC. The characters' dialogue was created from textwith a text to speech engine or automaticallysychronized to real voice audio clips. The digital actors were 'directed' using a markup language to describe behaviours and expressions, with real-time interactive playback.Software: LifeFXHardware: PC, Graphics Card This item is part of the collection: SIGGRAPH Director: Mark Sagar Producer: Mark Sagar Production Company: LifeFX Inc. The Turing Test - a chamber opera by Julian Wagstaff

Excerpts from the opera "The Turing Test" by Scottish Composer Julian Wagstaff, recorded live at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, 2007, performed by Edinburgh Studio Opera (the opera club of Edinburgh University). The opera takes its name from the test devised by the English mathematician Alan Turing to detect human-level intelligence in a machine. Visit www.turingtestopera.com for more info about the opera. Plans are currently in development to revive the opera for the Alan Turing Year 2012. Visit the website for more information.

Human Q: "Do you believe in God?" Computer A: "I would ask that you direct your spiritual questions to someone more qualified to comment. Ideally, a human." Human Q: "Are you self aware?" Computer A: "I'm sorry. I'm afraid I can't answer that." Human Q: "Are humans in danger of becoming ruled by their technology?" Computer A: "Checking on that for you... Computer Q: Would you like to search the web...?" Human A: "No, thank you. Computer response: "My pleasure, as always." ---- It occurred to me that the humans who designed this did so in a way to make humans the authority over certain fields of knowledge, such as spirituality. I wonder if this was merely a business decision so as not to offend any particular customers. The computer claims not to be able to answer the question about self awareness, yet is programmed to respond politely with a common expression "I'm sorry" and "I'm afraid" and later with "My pleasure" as if it is aware of some emotions. If the voice was more human-like, I may not be able to tell the difference from most of my former co-workers if it was a telephone conversation.

21st Century Turing Test: A heterophenomenological approach

In this video I argue against Chalmers 'Hard Problem' of consciousness and propose that we discuss necessary conditions of what we would consider to be human consciousness. Then decide what so called 'objective observations' we could carry out in order to see what it would take for a machine to be conscious (in the way that we of course define it). Drew McDermott, "Don't improve the Turing Test, abandon it"

BRIEF INFO: Video of Professor Drew McDermott's opening address to the "Towards a Comprehensive Turing Test (TCIT)" workshop, held as part of the 2010 annual AISB Convention in Leicester, UK. BRIEF BIO: Drew McDermott has done work in several areas of artificial intelligence. One of his perennial interests is in planning algorithms, which calculate structures of actions for autonomous agents of various sorts. He did seminal work in the area of "hierarchical planning" in the 1970s. In the last decade, his focus has switched to regression-based techniques for classical planning, especially methods that heuristically search through situation space. He was instrumental in starting the biannual series of AI Planning Systems (AIPS) conferences. In 1998, he ran the first ever Planning Competition in conjunction with AIPS; it has now become a standard part of the ICAPS conference, the merger of AIPS and the European Conference on Planning (ECP). Another enduring interest of Prof. McDermott's is in the area of knowledge representation (KR), which is the attempt to formalize what people know in a form usable by a computer. He wrote some influential papers on nonmonotonic logic and representation of temporal knowledge. However, in the mid-1980s he became convinced that the KR project, in its more ambitious formulations, was ill-defined. He published a paper titled "A Critique of Pure Reason" making this case. However, Prof. McDermott is now thinking about KR issues again, this time ...

THE TURING TEST- A conversation with Kevin Warwick

Prof. Kevin Warwick interviewed by Francesca Ferrando. These interviews are conceived as a project related to my PhD in Philosophy, on Posthumanism, Artificial Intelligence and Gender. You can check more info on my academic page: uniroma3.academia.edu --- CONVERSATION #12 1)The Centenary Celebration of the life and work of Alan Turing (1912-1954) is coming in 2012. His famous test was first introduced in his paper "Computing Machinery and Intelligence" (1950) which opens with the words: "I propose to consider the question, 'Can machines think?' ". The Turing test has proven to be highly influential, becoming an essential concept in the philosophy of AI, but it has also been strongly criticized. What do you think of the Turing test? Should it be still considered as a useful tool of understanding human / machine interactions?

[Misc.] The Turing Test

A short animation I made a while ago for the Animation12 animation competition. The competition was very restricted - tweens only, no longer than 60 seconds and with the theme of "Alan Turing". In the end, I found this competition so restricting that I was about to drop out of the competition - I had no ideas, no inspiration and was generally getting irritated. Less than 5 days later, this was finished.

H) The Turing Test (Edwin Mingard)

A 'taster' made as part of the Shorted Film Challenge, and one of three winners receiving development and NFM funding to produce their short this summer (2011). SARAH quits a brief modelling career after her first, awful photoshoot. She needs a job -- any job -- to pay the bills. She lives with a guy called ANDREW, who is easy-going and tries to help. She gets two jobs, and is fired from each in quick succession. After being fired for the second time in a few days, Sarah is feeling really down. She gets drunk. She shouts at Andrew, who's only trying to help. They decide that there's only one way to have a crap job without compromising your humanity: to do your job really badly. To write messages on the inside of corporate envelopes, tell people stories down the phone, cancel people's debts on the computer system. Sarah starts her new job the next day, and puts the idea into practice. Starring Ruth Johnson and Michael Carruthers Edwin Mingard (writer/director) Kyle Heslop (Director of Photography) Kate Eccles (Costume) Aris Anastassopolous Ben Wilson Steve Lee Laura Biziou Van Pol Mike Gandham

Dr Elham Kashefi: Quantum Turing test

A fundamental goal in quantum information processing is to test a machine's (or more generally nature's) ability to exhibit quantum behaviour. The most celebrated result in this domain, which has been also demonstrated experimentally, is the celebrated Bell Theorem that verifies the non-local nature of quantum mechanics. Could we generalise such approaches to verify that a given device is in fact taking advantage of quantum mechanics rather than being a disguised classical machine? Considering the exponential regime of quantum mechanics, the issue of the efficiency of such tests is the key challenge from the complexity point of view. On the other hand, from the foundational point of view, it is an intriguing open question whether a fully classical scheme could verify any quantum properties of a larger system while being experimentally feasible. Kashefi presents some recent progress towards this direction that also has surprising consequences on an entirely different open question, the existence of fully homomorphic encryption schemes. Presented by Dr Elham Kashefi, School of Informatics, the University of Edinburgh. Recorded on Friday 11 May 2012 at the Informatics Forum, The University of Edinburgh. The Turing Research Symposium was organised by the Royal Society of Edinburgh and the University of Edinburgh School of Informatics in partnership with SICSA and supported by Cambridge University Press.

Lecture 12.3: The Amazing Alan Turing - Richard Buckland (extension lecture) UNSW 2008

We had a gap at the end of Lecture 12 so Richard gives an unplanned and impromptu talk about some of the contributions of the amazing thinker Alan Turing. So much to say, so little time, such fast talking. We chat about 3 different major contributions he made to the world - his decryption work during WWII and the Engima Machine; his abstract model of a computer (the Turing Machine) and what things can be effectively "computed"; and finally, briefly only, his thoughts about what it is to be human and the difference between humans and computers - the Turing Test. Alan Turing is a key figure in the development of computing, indeed if I had to pick just one thinker who was the most amazing he'd get my vote. Richard promises to talk about the Turing Test in more depth in the next extension lecture. Also comes up: Epimenides paradox, non computable functions, the halting problem, U-559, Colin Grazier GC, Anthony Fasson, GC,Tommy Brown, Blade Runner, CAPTCHAs. Errata: My memory was about as reliable as usual - I said Tommy stayed outside in a boat but i've since read that all three swam across and went into the U-559. Humbling bravery. I've also since realised that Colin Grazier was from Tamworth in the UK, not the Tamworth in Australia as I had always thought (why are so many English places named after Australian towns?) Finally, something which actually I did know but still managed to get wrong - the important material salvaged was not a cypher machine but quantities of data ...
