Modena. Unesco World Heritage Site - Italy

Geography Modena lies on the Pianura Padana, and is bounded by the two rivers Secchia and Panaro, both affluents of the Po River. Their presence is symbolized by the Two Rivers Fountain in the city's center, by Giuseppe Graziosi. The city is connected to the Panaro by the Naviglio channel. The Apennines ranges begin some 10 km from the city, to the south. The commune is divided into four circoscrizioni. These are: * Centro storico (Historical Center, San Cataldo) * Crocetta (San Lazzaro-East Modena, Crocetta) * Buon Pastore (Buon Pastore, Sant'Agnese, San Damaso) * San Faustino (S.Faustino-Saliceta San Giuliano, Madonnina-Quattro Ville) Modena has a temperate climate. It experiences hot, humid summers with little rainfall and cold, damp wintersAncient times The territory around Modena (Latin: Mutina, Etruscan: Muoina) was inhabited by the Villanovans in the Iron Age, and later by Ligurian tribes, Etruscans, and the Gaulish Boii (the settlement itself being Etruscan). Although the exact date of its foundation is unknown, it is known that it was already in existence in the 3rd century BC, for in 218 BC, during Hannibal's invasion of Italy, the Boii revolted and laid siege to the city. Livy described it as a fortified citadel where Roman magistrates took shelter. The outcome of the siege is not known, but the city was most likely abandoned after Hannibal's arrival. Mutina was refounded as a Roman colony in 183 BC, to be used as a military base by Marcus Aemilius Lepidus ...

Cappadocia - Turkey - UNESCO World Heritage Site

Ferries to Turkey: ferriesturkey.com Cappadocia is a region in Central Anatolia, largely in Nevşehir Province. The name was traditionally used in Christian sources throughout history and is still widely used as an international tourism concept to define a region of exceptional natural wonders, in particular characterized by fairy chimneys and a unique historical and cultural heritage. The term, as used in tourism, roughly corresponds to present-day Nevşehir Province. In the time of Herodotus, the Cappadocians were reported as occupying the whole region from Mount Taurus to the vicinity of the Euxine (Black Sea). Cappadocia, in this sense, was bounded in the south by the chain of the Taurus Mountains that separate it from Cilicia, to the east by the upper Euphrates and the Armenian Highland, to the north by Pontus, and to the west by Lycaonia and eastern Galatia. Pompei - Italy - Unesco World Heritage Site

Pompei is a city and comune in the province of Naples in Campania, southern Italy. The city is mainly famous for the ruins of the ancient city of Pompeii, located in the frazione of Pompei Scavi. The central basilica, dedicated to Madonna del Rosario di Pompei, has become a site for Catholic pilgrimages in recent years. It houses a canvas by Luca Giordano. [edit] Pompeii is a partially buried Roman town-city near modern Naples in the Italian region of Campania, in the territory of the comune of Pompei. Along with Herculaneum, its sister city, Pompeii was destroyed and completely buried during a long catastrophic eruption of the volcano Mount Vesuvius spanning two days in 79 AD. The eruption buried Pompeii under 4 to 6 meters of ash and pumice, and it was lost for over 1500 years before its accidental rediscovery in 1599. Since then, its excavation has provided an extraordinarily detailed insight into the life of a city at the height of the Roman Empire. Today, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of the most popular tourist attractions of Italy, with approximately 2500000 visitors every year.Early history The archaeological digs at the site extend to the street level of the 79 AD volcanic event; deeper digs in older parts of Pompeii and core samples of nearby drillings have exposed layers of jumbled sediment that suggest that the city had suffered from the volcano and other seismic events before then. Three sheets of sediment have been found on top of the lava that lies ...

Rome - Italy - UNESCO World Heritage Site

Rome is the capital of Italy and the country's largest and most populated city and comune, with over 2.7 million residents in 1285.3 km2 (496.3 sq mi). The city is located in the central-western portion of the Italian Peninsula, on the Tiber River within the Lazio region of Italy. Rome's history spans two and a half thousand years. It was the capital city of the Roman Kingdom, the Roman Republic and the Roman Empire, which was the dominant power in Western Europe and the lands bordering the Mediterranean for over seven hundred years from the 1st century BC until the 7th century AD. Since the 1st century AD Rome has been the seat of the Papacy and, after the end of Byzantine domination, in the 8th century it became the capital of the Papal States, which lasted until 1870. In 1871 Rome became the capital of the Kingdom of Italy, and in 1946 that of the Italian Republic. After the Middle Ages, Rome was ruled by popes such as Alexander VI and Leo X, who transformed the city into one of the major centers of the Italian Renaissance, along with Florence.[2] The current version of St Peter's Basilica was built and the Sistine Chapel was painted by Michelangelo. Famous artists and architects, such as Bramante, Bernini and Raphael resided for some time in Rome, contributing to its Renaissance and Baroque architecture. In 2007 Rome was the 11th-most-visited city in the world, 3rd most visited in the European Union, and the most popular tourist attraction in Italy. The city is one of ...

Situated in the north-west of the country on the Vltava river, the city is home to about 1.3 million people, while its metropolitan area is estimated to have a population of over 2.3 million. The city has a temperate oceanic climate with warm summers and chilly winters. Prague has been a political, cultural and economic centre of Europe and particularly central Europe during its 1100 year existence. For centuries, during the Gothic and Renaissance eras, Prague was the permanent seat of two Holy Roman Emperors and thus was also the capital of the Holy Roman Empire. Later it was an important city in the Habsburg Monarchy and the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and after World War I became capital of Czechoslovakia. The city played major roles in the Protestant Reformation, the Thirty Years' War, and in 20th-century history, during both World Wars and the post-war Communist era. Prague is home to a number of famous cultural attractions, many of which survived the violence and destruction of twentieth century Europe. Main attractions include the following: Prague Castle, the Charles Bridge, Old Town Square, the Jewish Quarter, the Lennon Wall, and Petřín hill. Since 1992, the extensive historic centre of Prague has been included in the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites. Wadden Sea on UNESCO World Heritage list

Wadden Sea National Park is an excellent example of a coastal wetland between Den Helder in the Netherlands and Esbjerg in Denmark. It is the largest unbroken stretch of intertidal mudflats in the world, and the perfect example of a coastal wetland with high biological, hydrological and ecological importance, shared between three countries: Germany, the Netherlands, and Denmark. The area is of international importance being a nursery of marine life, a resting, moulting and feeding area for several millions of migratory birds, and a habitat for thousands of birds, seals and many other species. The Wadden Sea, an estuary of the North Sea, has a total area of about 8000 square km. It is the world's biggest coherent habitat of its kind and one of the last unspoiled estuaries in Europe. There are many varied and extensive habitats in the Wadden Sea. This important estuary includes the salt marshes along the coast line as well as the islands and dunes. The mud flats consist of the areas which get flooded twice a day and then fall dry again, and of the channel system of tideways, channels and shipping channels between the islands, which are responsible for the flooding and for the draining. The mud flats are known for their very low inclination which is usually less than 1 meter of difference in altitude on a 1000 meter long stretch. About fifty islands and islets protect the shallow Wadden Sea. This 28 minutes documentary is part of the tv-series WONDERS of WILDERNESS and is ...

Islamic Architecture Imam Mosque Isfahan Iran

Imam Mosque - UNESCO World Heritage Site - also known as Shah Mosque and Masjed-e Shah - located in Imam Square - also known as Naghsh-i Jahan Square or Maidan - in Isfahan - The Pearl of Islam - Iran. This mosque is often confused with Jameh Mosque in Iran due to its similar architecture. The mosque is a magnificent example of the extravagant architecture that constituted the glory of Isfahan at the time. It was built by the Safavids, a native dynasty, reunited Iran in the early 16th century and reached the highest point in the reign of Shah Abbas I the Great (1587-1629). He moved the capital to Isfahan (ancient Aspadana) (210 miles (340 km) south of Tehran) and in a exceptional illustration of Iranian town planning, reorganized the whole city in a series of interlinked squares according to the grandest plans conceivable. This was not the first time that the Safavids dynasty had moved their capital, they started moving since their original capital (Tabriz) in 1555, till they established as a world power in Isfahan in late 1590's. The Maidan itself host Ali Qapu Palace (Fourth Building, located in the west side of the Maidan, built in 1590), Lutfallah Mosque (Built after the completion of the Maidan between 1603 & 1619), Imam Mosque (Built between 1611 & 1630), and the bazaar that connected the old city with the new Maidan. In order to align the mosque with Mecca while maintaining the integrity of the square, the mosque is set at an angle of about 45 degrees to the ...

Sigiriya - UNECSCO World Heritage Site

"Sigiriya The Palace & Fortress in The Sky" Sigiriya, the spectacular 'Lion rock' fortress, stands majestically overlooking the luscious green jungle surroundings, and is one of Sri Lanka's major attractions. This was built by King Kasyapa, a son of King Dhatusena, by a palace consort. As legend goes, King Dhatusena was overthrown and walled in, alive by Kasyapa in 473 AD. Mogallana, Dhatusena's son by the true queen fled to India, vowing revenge. Kasyapa fearing an invasion built this impregnable fortress at Sigiriya. When the invasion finally came in 491, Kasyapa rode out to battle in his war elephant. In an attempt to out-flank his half-brother, Kasyapa took a wrong turn, where his elephant got stuck in the mud. His soldiers, thinking Kasyapa was retreating fled abandoning him, and he took his own life. Sigiriya later became a monastic refuge, but eventually fell into disrepair

Nepal travel. World Heritage.

Nepal is known as the abode of the gods. For many years a secret, unknown country, it was, in the 1950s, faced with making a leap from the 11th century to modern times. Visited first by mountaineers and trekkers, it later became the haunt of hippies. The Nepalese Government has set aside more than 35 per cent of the total area of the country as natural sanctuaries. There are now nine National Parks, three conservation areas and two wildlife reserves, located both in the mountainous zones as well as in the tropical plains. The Terai lowlands in the south form the richest habitat in the country. Five protected areas are located in the region and many species of wildlife, including the rare Royal Bengal tiger and leopard, can be observed. Kathmandu Kathmandu, the capital and also the cultural, commercial and business hub of the Kingdom, is a magical place. In the center is Durbar Square where there is a wonderful collection of temples and shrines, both Buddhist and Hindu. They are generally built in the pagoda style with a mass of intricate exterior carving. The old Royal Palace is in the square, as is the Statue of Hanuman the Monkey God, clad in a red cloak. Here also is the house of the living goddess -- the Kumari. A few kilometers from Kathmandu is the hugely impressive Bodnath Stupa. It has become a center of Tibetan exile culture and is a good place to buy Tibetan handicrafts and artifacts. Climbing upwards from the city one can reach the famous Buddhist stupa of ...

Mount Kinabalu World Heritage - Timpohon Trail

Mount Kinabalu World Heritage - Timpohon Trail 5th April 2011 Shot & Edited using Sony NEX-3 by Kong DKBU Mount Kinabalu (Malay: Gunung Kinabalu) is a prominent mountain on the island of Borneo in Southeast Asia. It is located in the east Malaysian state of Sabah and is protected as Kinabalu National Park, a World Heritage Site. Kinabalu is the tallest peak in Borneo's Crocker Range and is the fourth tallest mountain in the Malay Archipelago after Papua's Puncak Jaya, Puncak Trikora and Puncak Mandala. Mount Kinabalu is also the 20th tallest mountain in the world by topographic prominence. In 1997, a re-survey using satellite technology established its summit (known as Low's Peak) height at 4095 metres (13435 ft) above sea level, which is some 6 metres (20 ft) less than the previously thought and hitherto published figure of 4101 metres (13455 ft). The mountain and its surroundings are among the most important biological sites in the world, with over 4500 species of plant, 326 species of birds, and 100 mammalian species identified. Among this rich collection of wildlife are famous species such as the gigantic Rafflesia plants and the orangutan. Mount Kinabalu has been accorded UNESCO World Heritage status. Low's Peak can be climbed quite easily by a person in good physical condition and there is no need for mountaineering equipment at any point on the main route. Other peaks along the massif, however, require rock climbing skills. Credits to Wikipedia.com en.wikipedia.org

I've been in Japan for 6 months studying at Kansai Kokusai Gakuin. Since I was 15, I've been interested in the fashion, food, cameras, culture, art and underground culture of Japan and really wanted to come here. I've especially enjoyed seeing the beautiful and interesting cities of Kobe and Kyoto. ・劉 夢莎(ASA) I'm from China. My mother studied translating in Japan and, through that influence, I also became interested in the country. I first came to Japan as an exchange student in my first year of university. I'm currently studying marketing at Kansai Gakuin University. I absolutely love the Kansai region. The people are friendly and interesting. The food in Kansai is also very delicious; Kobe beef, Osaka takoyaki, the ramen in Wakayama but to name a few.
