Iran has successfully test-fired two long-range missiles on the last day of major naval exercises in the international waters of the Persian Gulf. This comes amid mounting Western pressure on the country over its nuclear ambitions. Tehran says it's ready to counter any attack by enemies like Israel or the United States. Iran has also angrily reacted to new US sanctions targeting its central bank and financial sector. It has been threatening to close the Strait of Hormuz - the world's most important oil export route linking the Persian Gulf to the Indian Ocean. US aircraft carriers to deliver 'direct message to Iran'

Europe and the US have expressed their willingness to return to talks with Iran over its controversial nuclear program. But despite that, the EU is seemingly still set to approve an embargo on Iranian oil. France even says the time to avoid military intervention is running out. As for the US, this week it strengthened its presence in the region by sending a second aircraft carrier to the Arabian sea. It's reportedly planning to sail through the Strait of Hormuz which Iran has threatened to block in response to sanctions. The Strait is a strategic waterway which the majority of oil exports from the Gulf to the West pass through. US Navy rescues Iranian Fishermen held hostage by pirates

The US Navy has rescued 13 Iranian fishermen being held by pirates in the Arabian Sea, the Pentagon says. The 13 were rescued on Thursday after a distress call was received from an Iranian fishing vessel which had been boarded by pirates over a month ago. Fifteen suspected pirates were detained and are being held by the US Navy. The Iranians had been kept in harsh conditions and are thought to have been forced to assist the pirates in their operations, according to the Pentagon. 'Kindness and respect' The freed hostages are now on their way back home, the US Navy said. The hostages "had been through a lot", said Navy Criminal Investigative Service agent Josh Schminky. "We went out of our way to treat the fishing crew with kindness and respect," he said. The captain of the Al Molai, a fishing dhow, "expressed his sincere gratitude that we came to assist them. He was afraid that without our help, they could have been there for months," he added. ########################### In other News: Beijing News reported on the completely dried up Xiangjiang River in the central city of Changsha, where residents have started to grow vegetables on the riverbed.

A US aircraft carrier entered a zone near the Strait of Hormuz being used by the Iranian navy for wargames. The Iranian aircraft took video and photos of the US vessel. The US aircraft carrier was believed to be the USS John C. Stennis, one of the US navy's biggest warships. US officials announced Wednesday that the ship and its accompanying battle group moved through the Strait of Hormuz, a narrow stretch at the entrance to the Gulf that is the world's most important check point for oil shipments. After warnings from the Iranian government and navy this week that Iran could close the strait if threatened by further Western sanctions, the US Defense Department warned Wednesday that such actions "will not be tolerated." The United States maintains a navy presence in the Gulf in large part to ensure oil traffic there is unhindered.

Meanwhile the EU is mulling an embargo on the purchase of Iranian oil, and a decision on that is expected before the end of the month. The Director of the Beirut-based centre for Middle East Studies, Dr Hisham Jaber, believes the West's actions are adding fuel to an already highly flammable situation. Will Israel's fear of Iran lead to a war?

The tensions between the Iran and the West seem to be getting tighter. On Wednesday Mostafa Ahmadi Roshan, a key Iranian nuclear scientist, was killed. President Obama recently sent thousands of US troops to Israel. Many believe sanctions without diplomacy will only lead to a war. Although US Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta, has publicly admitted that Iran us not trying to develop a nuclear weapon, the tough sanctions continue. Gayane Chichakyan reports

Dec 28, 2011 US Navy 5th fleet won't tolerate 'disruption' through Strait of Hormuz

The US Navy said Iran's threat to block the strategically and economically important Strait of Hormuz is unacceptable. "The free flow of goods and services through the Strait of Hormuz is vital to regional and global prosperity," Navy 5th Fleet in Bahrain spokeswoman Cmdr. Amy Derrick Frost told reporters on Wednesday. "Anyone who threatens to disrupt freedom of navigation in an international strait is clearly outside the community of nations; any disruption will not be tolerated." The 34-mile-wide shipping channel leads in and out of the Persian Gulf between Iran and Oman. It is strategically important because tankers carrying oil travel through it. Europe and Iran point fingers in a blame game

On Wednesday Iran proceeded loading fuel rods into their Research Reactor. The enrichment program has received worldwide criticism due to fears that Iran could potentially use this program to develop nuclear weapons. Also Greece, Italy, Spain and Portugal received an ultimatum from Iran. They requested the four countries to continue their long-term oil export contracts or be scraped completely. France and the Netherlands were told they will no longer receive any Iranian oil. Many see the two moves as an act of aggression and according to some reports, this is a pre-emptive move to the EU boycott on Iranian oil that was set for July. US Fifth Fleet says won't allow Hormuz To Be Closed

www.youtube.com The US Navy has said it will not allow one of the world's most important oil trade routes to be disrupted, following a threat by Iran to stop ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz. Lt. General Paul Van Riper led a hypothetical Persian Gulf state in the 2002 Millennium Challenge wargames that resulted in the destruction of the Fifth Fleet. His experience and conclusions regarding the vulnerability of the Fifth Fleet to an assymetrical military conflict and the implications for a war against Iran have been ignored. Neoconservatives within the Bush administration are currently aggressively promoting a range of military actions against Iran that will culminate in it attacking the US Navy's Fifth Fleet with sophisticated cruise anti-ship missiles. They are ignoring Van Riper's experiences in the Millennium Challenge and how it applies to the current nuclear conflict with Iran. Iran has sufficient quantities of cruise missiles to destroy much or all of the Fifth Fleet which is within range of Iran's mobile missile launchers strategically located along its mountainous terrain overlooking the Persian Gulf. The Bush administration is deliberately downplaying the vulnerability of the Fifth Fleet to Iran's advanced missile technology which has ...
