Eddy Huntington - USSR (best audio)

Own words: "Eddy Huntington or (Eddie or Edward, all of which are me) was born on the 29th October 1965 in the North East of England. I was born the son of a coal miner and a housewife. I have three sisters, Anne, Enid and Sheila. I went to local schools in Peterlee and then to the local grammar school. At 18 I left home to go and live in London. This was the start of a big change in my life. I started working in Pineapple Dance studios and did some work modelling and as a video extra. During this time I made contact with Baby Records in Italy. I listened to a demo of USSR and decided to record it. In Milano I made lots of new friends. Den Harrow, Tom Hooker, Jennifer Munday, Sharon, Baltimora and many others. The eighties were fantastic, with good music, lots of fun and a little madness. I remember running around the streets of Verona with Den in the early hours of the morning shouting and singing at the top of our voices. I met a lot of big stars and had the priveledge to work with some very professional people. My favourite Italo songs of that time would have been Spagna, Easy Lady; Tom Hooker, Looking for Love; Swiss Boy; and Sabrina, Boys Boys Boys. I had and still have a very commercial taste, which is probably why my songs all are fun and very commercial. In the nineties, I was working in America, and Japan with a more distinctive HINRG sound; Meet my Friend and May Day. I also met Paris who I later married and had a baby with. 'I fought for USSR, but failed': RT talks to Mikhail Gorbachev

The end of the Cold War, the reunification of Germany, liberalism and Perestroyka. The USSR's first and last president, Mikhail Gorbachev celebrates his 80th birthday today, and his legacy includes being hailed as the father of Russia's democracy. Mikhail Gorbachev was born in a small village in the south of the country, and became leader of the USSR in 1985. With his economic and political reforms, he paved the way for democracy in Russia. His best known reform is dubbed "Perestroyka", which aimed to revamp the country without destroying the basis of socialism. His initiatives also led to the abolishment of state censorship and the creation of free speech in the country. Gorbachev received the Nobel peace prize in 1990. A year later, however, he was removed from power in a coup which saw the collapse of the Soviet Union and Boris Yeltsin become president. But Mikhail Gorbachev still says his reforms were timely and necessary. "We realized from experience that it was dangerous to wait much longer, that we had to take a risk," he told RT in an interview. "But we couldn't postpone it, we needed changes." Gorbachev does not agree when people say that Perestroyka failed: "It didn't fail. It was disrupted, derailed, stopped. But still, Perestroyka achieved a lot. Inside Russia, we had democracy, free elections, freedom of consciousness, private property, freedom to travel abroad --everything. Also, glasnost. There was so much openness -- the entire country was affected. People ...

Canada vs USSR 1987 Bench clearing brawl

Canada Russia Hockey Fight • The "Punch-up in Piestany" erupted halfway through the final game of the 1987 world junior hockey championship. Canada was assured a medal, and would have moved ahead of Finland for the gold if they had beaten the Soviets by at least five goals. • The blow-up began as a fight between Pavel Kostichkin and Theoren Fleury. Four Soviet players left their bench to join the brawl, and then all the players on both teams swarmed onto the ice. Excerpt from cbc.ca.
The Cold War Game: The USSR

After Renny Bartlett made the Cold War Game the USA for Triple Vision and Channel 4, Ch4 decided that to balance the books there should be a programme on the USSR - which is what this documentary is - I directed this project and we made Pick of the Day in every national newspaper at the time (1988) so I must have done something right ! The idea was that as Soviet history in the west had been characterised by the use of drama as documentary (Eisenstein's footage for instance) that we should re-tell that history in that form but make a twist at the end to show how that characterisation was a wrong one....

1957: R7 (USSR)

The R-7 Semyorka was the world's first intercontinental ballistic missile. In modified form, it launched Sputnik, the first artificial satellite, into orbit, and became the basis for the Soyuz space launcher and the Molniya, Vostok and Voskhod variants. The R-7 was 34 m long, 3 m in diameter and weighed 280 tons. It was two-stage, powered by rocket motors using liquid oxygen (lox) and kerosene and was capable of delivering its payload at around 8800 km, with an accuracy (CEP) of around 5km. The initial launch was boosted by four strap-on liquid rocket boosters making up the first stage with a central 'sustainer' motor powering through both the first and the second stage. Each strap-on booster included two vernier thrusters and the core stage included four. The guidance system was inertial with radio control of the vernier thrusters. The first testing of the new missile took place on 15 May 1957 from Baikonur Cosmodrome. A fire in a strap-on rocket led to an unintended crash 400 km from the site. Following another unsuccessful test the first successful long flight, of 6000 km, was made on August 21. It was announced by TASS on August 26. A modified version of the missile later placed Sputnik 1 in orbit from Baikonur on October 4 and Sputnik 2 on November 3. Music: Marcus P. Graf

PSS silent pistol (USSR/Russia)

Type: Double Action Caliber 7.62x41mm SP-4 special purpose noiseless cartridge Overall length 170 mm Weight loaded 850 g Magazine capacity 6 rounds The PSS (Pistolet Sptsialnyj Samozaryadnyj - Special Self-loading pistol, official index 6P28) has been developed for special personnel of the Soviet KGB, as well as for elite elements of the Spetsnaz of the Soviet Army. Adopted circa 1983, it provided significant improvements in the firepower over the preceding 'special' designs such as MSP and S-4M two-shot silent pistols, while being much more compact and much more silent in action, than 'conventional' silenced pistols like Soviet PB or Chinese Type 67. At the present time the PSS is used by most elite Russian anti-terrorist teams. The PB looks like the conventional blowback pistol, but it has some quite uncommon features. First, it has a two part barrel, with the separate rifled par, which is fixed to the frame, and the breech part with the chamber inside, which is allowed to recoil inside the frame for a short length against its own return spring. This recoiling part increases the weight of the moving parts at the initial stages of recoil, and also is used to slow down the slide on its final stages of movement, to dampen the sound of the slide hitting the stop on the end of the recoil cycle. The slide return spring is housed in the slide, above the barrel. the double action firing mechanism with open hammer and slide-mounted safety/decocker is borrowed from the Makarov PM ...

It was the most powerful nuclear weapon ever exploded. Designed to produce a blast of 100 megatons, the test was reduced to 57 megatons by replacing the second-stage explosive with a lead plug since even the scientists were worried about the unpredictable effects of the full 100 megaton yield. At this explosive power this bomb was 4000 times as powerful as that which destroyed Hiroshima. The explosion was heard 600 miles away and the shock wave was measured to have ...

Galis vs USSR (eurobasket 1987 final, 40 points)

Nikos Galis...A LEGEND!!! (scored 40 points that night). The final score: Greece-USSR 103-101. Former NBA established defender, Sarunas Marciulionis, was Galis' personal guard in the game. He once mentioned him as one of the toughest opponents he ever had to face, when asked by an NBA reporter, who of course had no idea! Too pitty Europe learned about Nick when he was old, and not as athletic as in the early 80s. In 1987,he seams twice as athletic as young and mighty Marciulionis, but imagine he's 30 years old. Galis could easily dunk even at that age, even being only 6,1 feet(1.83). But he disliked dunking, despite learning the game in the states (dunk mania was not there yet, though). He dunked several times in 1980-81 season, when he was only 23 years old, but those dunks have only been recorded by a photographer, and not by a video camera. (the game was not popular those days in Greece). In that season, Nick averaged 44 points per game. Dammit. We've seen so little of him!
