Stevens Institute of Technology: The Innovation University Undergraduate Experience

Founded in 1870, Stevens is a premier private coeducational institution focused on research and entrepreneurship. Stevens is committed to exploring the frontiers of engineering, science, and management. Stevens creates new knowledge and educates and inspires students to acquire the competencies needed to lead in scientific discovery and in the creation, application and management of technology to solve complex problems and to build new enterprises. The Institutional Vision: Stevens believes that solutions to many of the critical problems that face humanity can be found in improved use and understanding of technology, and that it is the duty of the Institute to produce engineers, scientists and business leaders prepared for this challenge. This vision is embodied in a concept referred to as "Technogenesis®," the process of education that begins with the inception of an idea and proceeds through the engineering and marketing phases of the development of a product or service which germinates from the idea. Inherent in this concept is the requirement that the educational structure and research effort be multi-disciplinary and interdisciplinary. It provides researchers with the opportunity to collaborate in research efforts that cut across disciplinary boundaries and also provides the working professional with the broad educational experience that is essential in career enhancement. Stevens demonstrates its commitment through the development of several startup companies ...

AlgTop0a: Introduction to Algebraic Topology

This is the first video of the introductory lecture of a beginner's course in Algebraic Topology. The subject is one of the most dynamic and exciting areas of 20th century mathematics, with its roots in the work of Riemann, Klein and Poincare in the latter half of the 19th century. This first lecture will outline the main topics, and will present three well-known but perhaps challenging problems for you to try. The course is for 3rd or 4th year undergraduate math students, but anyone with some mathematical maturity and a little background or willingness to learn group theory can benefit. The subject is particularly important for modern physics. Our treatment will have many standard features, but also some novelties. The lecturer is Assoc Prof NJ Wildberger of the School of Mathematics and Statistics at UNSW, Sydney, Australia.
