March 2, 2008 - Colin Meloy played a free in-store at the new Jackpot Records in Portland, Oregon. This is a new song he played about "covert CIA operatives", which I'm going to pre-emptively title "Valerie Plame." Sweet Comfort Band first performed in 1972 in Riverside, California, and were active until 1984. The band was composed of keyboardist/lead vocalist Bryan Duncan, guitarist/vocalist Randy Thomas and brothers Kevin (bass guitar) and Rick (drums/vocals) Thomson. With their 1977 self-titled release on Maranatha! Records, SCB hit the Jesus Music scene with a funky, jazzy, R&B and 70's rock sound. This set them apart from many of the bands in the nascent Contemporary Christian music industry who were primarily performing folk-rock and soft rock. Few bands had the musicianship displayed by this quartet. However, Maranatha! decided to quit releasing rock and roll albums and focus on children's releases, gospel and worship music. The band did not fit the new direction, so Light Records welcomed them for their sophomore release Breakin' The Ice. The band went their separate ways in 1984 having released six albums while building a large fan base. Bryan Duncan released a number of solo projects over the next fifteen years. Randy Thomas went on to found the band Allies and co-wrote radio hit Butterfly Kisses with former Allies band member Bob Carlisle.

Here is a famous song performed by the little-known singer Valerie Carr, and coming from an old and rare LP. Valerie Carr (born 1936 in New York City) is an African-American singer. A gifted vocalist, in the mid 1950's Valerie Carr recorded for King Records before being signed in 1958 by Roulette Records where she remained until 1962. At Roulette, one of her 45 rpm recordings, "When The Boys Talk About The Girls", peaked on the 1958 Billboard charts at No. 19, and also reached the Top 40 in the UK singles chart. The lack of further chart action in the UK gave Carr the tag there of being a one hit wonder. However, the flip side of the record was her version of "Padre" that had been released a short time before by Toni Arden and became a million-seller hit. "Padre" is a hauntingly beautiful ballad of love lost that demonstrated the purity of Carr's voice. At the time, many believed Carr's version to be superior and it was rumored that radio listeners may have mistakenly bought the Arden version in error. In 1959, Valerie Carr put out two LPs, "Song Stylist Extraordinaire" and "Ev'ry Hour Ev'ry Day of My Life", the latter considered by some as her best work. In 1960 she recorded "Oh Gee"/"You Belong in Someone Else's Arms", the second side written by Burt Bacharach and Bob Hilliard. Her 1961 single "I Left There Crying" made it into the Top 50.
