Thw Winton woods High School Varsity Ensemble - Dwijavanthi March 9, 2011 Descriptoin from the Concert program: This Indian Raga represents a milestone for Winton Woods HS choirs, as it is the first transcription of an Indian work the WWHS choirs have ever performed. The Indian musical tradition dates back thousands of years and like the West, Indians often train their young musicians in conservatories. The term, raga, refers to a specific scale whish is the basis for the work. Like the American blues scale, this scale allows the third and seventh scale degrees to be altered. This arrangement by Ethan Sperry, formerly a staff member of Miami University, uses the voices to simulate the elements of a small Indian ensemble. Most of the syllables you will hear are taken from the Indian rhythmic language called, sollokattu which is used to teach rhythmic patterns, often to drummers and dancers. The only actual word in the piece is Thillana which is a Southern Indian musical form in which a simple melody is introduced and then repeated with increasingly complex ornamentation at increasingly faster speeds.
