July 2007 When reporter Anne Maria Nicholson was inside the crater of Mt Vesuvius in Naples, she was less alarmed by the smoking fumeroles that were expelling clouds of gas around her than the ground giving away beneath her. "I was there with a scientist from Naples University, Professor Benedetto de Vivo. He was so intent on pointing out the intricacies of the inside of the crater that he wasn't looking at the ground beneath him. There was an enormous drop in front of us and the ground wasn't that stable. He told me there's a lake of magma about 12 kilometres beneath us but at that point, my main concern was falling rather than the thought of a massive eruption." Nicholson and cameraman Louie Eroglu filmed the mountain from all sides, including the towns in the so-called red zone that are at risk. "They say a volcano is only dangerous if there are people around it. In this case there are three million people and the major problem is that it so congested that if there is an eruption with little warning, it will be impossible for people to escape. "Unfortunately, there's a major disagreement among scientists with some saying there will be several weeks warning while others say it could be as little as a day. In spite of this, the authorities have allowed lots of high rise buildings and have now given permission to build the biggest hospital in southern Italy, right in the path of the last lava flow from Vesuvius. A unique experience Mount Vesuvius, the worlds most dangerous volcano and also one of the most beautiful landscapes in Europe. It is located in a national park and the summit of the volcano is open to visitors that can reach the top of the mountain ( Gran Cono ) and observe the 300 meter deep crater. On a clear day the view from the top of the 1281 meters mountain shows everything from Capri island to Napoli. Definitely one should consider at least once in a lifetime to go the spiral walkway around the mountain just to enjoy the pleasure of this experience. The Vesuvius is best known for the eruption of 79 that destroyed Pompei and Herculaneun. The two towns were completely destroyed but todays archaeological area provides one of the most detailed and impressive inside into Roman empire life, visited by millions of tourists. How large the next eruption would be is the matter of researches and debates. However, even an ordinary person can guess the tragedy that this beautiful sleeping volcano can provoke just watching the densely populated area in the footsteps of the mountain. About 600 thousand people are living in the base of the volcano, the so called red Zone in the current evacuation plan. Other 1 million are calculated in the second emergency boundary, and the worst numbers show that a population of 3 million people living close to the area could risk in case of another strong "Plinian" eruption. I was searching for this song on YouTube, and I noticed that no one had a video of it yet, so I decided to put it up for anyone that was looking. In the beginning of the song, I put up a few pictures of the volcano. I also put up a few pictures of the ruins of Pompeii and paintings from that time. I included images of the aftermath along with facts about what happened in the big eruption. After about 2 1/2 minutes, i ran out of pictures, but you can still enjoy the listening experience!

It has erupted many times since and is today regarded as one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world.
