Video Mic Test - SennheiserMKE400, Rode VideoMic

This was a sound test on the Rode Video mic, SennheiserMKE400 and the Sony UWPV130 Wireless Lav PAC for HDV CH 30 on the Canon 5D. Rode VideoMic Pro Review vs Rode VideoMic - DSLR FILM NOOB

www.dslrfilmnoob.com The rode VideoMic pro has been around for awhile, but I finally came up with a good enough excuse to buy one. Although the audio tests don't show any real difference in audio quality, the higher price of the VideoMic pro gives you a much smaller and lighter package. The new design has better suspension system and the +20db switch gives you a much stronger audio single for cameras with poor or noise amplifiers. Pros: Smaller Size Better shock mount design +20db audio output for stronger mic signals Cons: Flimsy looking audio cable If you need a smaller on camera microphone or a stronger audio signal for your camera, it's worth the extra $50 to $70 for the VideoMic pro. If you don't care about the large size of the original VideoMic and don't have problems with the output volume, you'll probably be just as happy with the original Rode VideoMic. Update: Right after I posted this video I was sent a link from Rode saying the thinner cable was reinforced by some kind of material. Hopefully that is correct. If it is then the thinner cable is probably a good thing. Also there is a mistake at the 4 min mark where I accidentally refer to the original Rode VideoMic as the VideoMic Pro. It's to late to fix that one, sorry guys. I review my first thoughts of the Rode VideoMic Pro. Solid, high quality mic, would highly recommend it. Filmed on a Sony HDR CX550v, yes I needed an adapter for the shoe mount. Like I said, if you're using a camcorder you'll most likely have to use an adapter. If you're using a DSLR you probably won't need one. (it all depends on the model of the camera/camcorder). Rode Videomic & Videomic Pro Audio Test +20dB

Here's the first video I did comparing them www.youtube.com For this test I decided to try what rode advised and set the gain to +20db on the back of the Videomic Pro (VWP) and turn down the levels l in the camera to 4 notches from the bottom. And for the Videomic (VM) I set that to normal settings and adjusted the levels to peak at about 12dB. This does mean, however, that for each test the levels in the camera where different for each mic. But to do a fair test to the VMP it is best to use the suggested settings from the manufacturer with the Canon 5D so you can get the best out of the cameras far from perfect l in-built audio. Listen and let me know what you think. From my own conclusions there is quite a difference. I recommend you turn up the volume up on your computer/tv to compare the two. There is a distinct loudness and hiss to the VP but that has disappeared from the VMP, albeit making the VMP much quieter. I'm still not sure that benefit warrants such a difference in price between the two but for some people it may be the clincher plus it is so small and easier to carry around than the VM. If you want to hear the audio only click on this link www.vimeo.com I hope that has helped and look forward to your comments. Here's my websites www.digitalslrshooter.com http

Rode VideoMic vs. AT822 - Live Music Test w/ Tony McManus

I've been trying to find a good mic to use for recording live music with a small handheld camcorder. The Rode VideoMic isn't bad, and can handle loud rock music (using its pad switches). But it's mono and a bit bass heavy, and is kind of fragile. A more rugged stereo version is available, but it's almost twice as heavy: 10 oz vs. 6 oz. The Rode has a high-pass filter that reduces the bass, but it reduces it too much for music, so I never use it. I have an old Sony stereo mic that's okay for moderately loud rock music, but the bass roll-off is too steep and it can sound a bit 'boxy' at times. I recently got a discontinued Audio Technica 822 on sale; it has pretty good specs, and I ran this test to see how it stacks up against the Rode. I think it sounds quite a bit better. The recordings of the fingerstyle competitors in my other YouTubes came out quite well. It has been replaced by the AT 8022, which is heavier (9 oz vs. 6 oz) and more expensive. There are a couple of problems with it, though. The mounting shoe it comes with is horrible - it picks up motor noise from the camera worse than the built-in mic does. I had to buy a separate bracket, which added a lot to the cost and makes the whole assembly rather awkward. It's not something you'd want to use anywhere you'd be getting banged around (like a bar), which is why I haven't been able to try it with any really loud music yet. Also, being a stereo mic and not a shotgun mic, it picks up anybody nearby who's talking ...

Test of the Rode Videomic, Videomic Pro & Lavalier Mic

Decided to do a little test of the three mics I use on nearly all of my jobs. The Rode Videomic is just one stunning mic and has got me out of a few tight spots when I needed decent audio from my 5D. Last week I decided I buy the Videomic Pro because everyone said it was good but I hadn't seen any actual hard evidence that proved it was a lot better than the older Videomic. So I thought a test of both of these would be helpful to others. As I also own the Rode Lavalier mic it would be mad not put that into the mix to see what difference it made. This test was done in my lounge at night which is a quiet environment so decided to turn on the tv and stereo to add some background noise in the later tests in this video. I adjusted to levels on the 5D to get it about -12db but it was tough to get it spot on. For the first recording without any background noise the levels were up a bit high so turned them down a bit for the second test with the tv on in the background. So while that is quieter I think the sound quality is better. Comparing the lavalier was a bit different as well because everytime I used it the levels needed to be adjusted down quite a lot compared to the Videomic because it was coming out very hot. Are there any conclusions? You will have to judge for yourself. I'm no expert but if my opinions count for anything I couldn't tell the difference between the two videomics, but as I said, I'm no sound technician. I will say that I didn't test the high pass filter or ...

Audio Test on RODE VIDEOMIC PRO with CANON 600D / T3i (without MAGIC LANTERN)

This is a very silly, little, unscientific test video on sound recording with the Rode VMP connected to Canon 600D /T3i, and "without" the usage of Magic Lantern Firmware. And as I said before, this is very unscientific and totally unorganized so please DO NOT take this too seriously... The only reason why I wanted to do this video is simply because that I'm pretty curious about the the sound quality of Rode VMP connecting to Canon 600D /T3i, since there are lots of people out there claiming that although 600D / T3i has the manual audio level, but because of the firmware itself isn't as good as the other camera (5D2, 60D, 550D etc.), not to mention after they applied to Magic Lantern firmware... And so basically what I did was, I did a indoor test and an outdoor test, by setting the Rode VMP to High Pass Filter ON / +20db, and the camera audio level lowered to 1 notch (and 4 notches) above the bottom to see how it performs. Oh and, I also tested "with and without" the dead kitten when shooting outdoor scenes. I don't want to bias, and neither am I qualified to do so, therefore I'm not going say too much about the conclusion, I'll let you decide whether it's good or bad. But I really think, as long as you use it right (well prepared, right settings, use with cautious etc.), the audio itself is REALLY GOOD. But again, like I said, I would still like to here how you guys think about it~ So let's KICK IT!! FOLLOW ME ON- FACE BOOK: www.facebook.com TWITTER: twitter.com
