WSR Spring Gala( Part 1).20 & 21/03/2010
This is the first weekend of The West Somerset Railway's Spring Steam Gala. The weather was terrible on the Friday night and all day Saturday, with heavy winds and torrential rain, but I managed to get some footage of the event. I was up at 07.00 to film the first service of the day which was a Saturdays only 08.00 from Bishops Lydeard to Minehead with the two visiting 9F's in charge. All clips are appropriately titled, so I hope you enjoy part one of two covering this wonderful event....I must also congratulate the WSR for the superb job of clearing the line side vegetation over the Winter, and the outstanding friendliness of the Staff at every station visited...Bob

WSR Spring Gala 2010 Part 1
This video focuses on the first weekend of the West Somerset Railway's 2010 Spring Gala. As part of the GWR175 celebrations, the WSR decided on a moderately 'Standard Class' feel to this years event. WSR Autumn Gala 2011 Part 2
The West Somerset Railway held it's annual autumn gala, with various engines putting in appearances. This video focuses on the highlights of Sunday 2nd of October. The weather could only be described as an Indian Summer, with temperatures reaching the high twenties. Very unlike the norm for the time of year. Alas as I upload this video, temperatures have noticeably dropped! This year saw the gala debut of 7828 Odney Manor (Running as Norton Manor) as well as 34070 Manston and GNR N2 1744 as guest engines. It was unfortunate to hear the fellow guest engine 5029 Nunney Castle had failed on the Friday of the event with a broken lubrication pipe on a driving wheel axlebox. WSR Tornado Fortnight - 09/06/09 - Part 1
Since I abandoned my trip to the WSR on the previous saturday, i decided to make a visit to Bishops Lydeard on the tuesday the following week, the added bonus being the 30th anniversary of the opening of Crowcombe Heathfield and Bishops Lydeard, and the railway had organised Hymek D7017 to haul the heritage goods train from Minehead to Bishops Lydeard to mark the anniversary (Not featured in this part). In this part we see the star of the show A1 Pacific 60163 'Tornado' before its departure to Minehead, 3850 arriving before she leaves. And then we see 3850 running round the train, and departing for Minehead.

WSR CROSSING GATE PROTEST DEMO Part 1
At Watchet on 13 November 2010. The first in a series of videos taken when volunteer staff from Watchet Station met a request by protesters to meet and discuss problems caused by the fitting of gates at the crossing by the railway HQ As has been previously been pointed out the unpaid volunteers at the station are not "The Railway"and only have the power to report what happens and cannot themselves affect any changes at the crossing which is totally under the control of the railway HQ at Minehead.This is the fourth video on this subject which have already received over 1000 viewings with over 250 comments giving opinions and helpful advice to the railway on what many people consider to be a very unsatisfactory and unsafe situation which is not good publicity for the West Somerset Railway, . The Duke was based on the BR Standard Class 7 Britannia design. It incorporated three sets of modified Caprotti valve gear, relatively new to British locomotive engineering, and more efficient than Walschaerts or Stephenson valve gear. The Duke was regarded as a failure by locomotive crews due to its poor steaming characteristics and its heavy fuel consumption. Trials undertaken by British Railways also returned negative feedback, reporting problems with the poor draughting of the locomotive which resulted in difficulty adhering to the timetables. The result was an operational period of only eight years. This unique locomotive was saved from being scrapped at Woodham Brothers scrapyard in Barry, Vale of Glamorgan, South Wales when it was purchased by a group of railway enthusiasts who restored it from scrapyard to as-built condition in 13 years. Since then modifications have been made to the original design, resulting in one of the most efficient and powerful locomotives ever to run in Britain. As a result the Duke of Gloucester can frequently be seen on the mainline around Britain.
WSR Mixed Traffic Weekend - 12/06/09 - Part 1
Part 1 of 2 The West Somerset Railway held its 3rd Mixed Traffic Event over the weekend of 12th - 14th of June 2009. I made a trip down on the first day of the event on the friday. In this part we start of at Minehead, with the two Class 14s being prepared for duty. Then we see 'Western Courier' prior to departure from Minehead, and departing from Dunster. The Class 47 'North Star' then arrives at Dunster. Back at Minehead the the DMU leaves with the Dunster shuttle, the Class 14s attach to the train, before the DMU arrives back and they leave for Bishops Lydeard. The Class 35 Hymek arrives from Bishops Lydeard and the Class 47 moves onto the train. After passing A1 60163 'Tornado' at Blue Anchor we see the 47 depart for Bishops Lydeard from Washford, with a slightly unexpected appearance from 'Kilmersdon' shunting in the yard, the Western runs through with a non stop train from Bishops Lydeard to Minehead, and 60163 arrives from Minehead before we cut to Willtion to see her depart for Bishops Lydeard.
