World War I

Please visit this url for more educational videos: oldgeekphilosopher.blogspot.com Thanks :) World War I (abbreviated as WW-I, WWI, or WW1), also known as the First World War, the Great War, and the War to End All Wars, was a global military conflict that embroiled most of the world's great powers, assembled in two opposing alliances: the Triple Entente and the Triple Alliance. Over 70 million military personnel were mobilized in one of the largest wars in history. The main combatants descended into a state of total war, pumping their entire scientific and industrial capabilities into the war effort. Over 15 million people were killed, making it one of the deadliest conflicts in history. The immediate or proximate cause of war was the assassination on 28 June 1914 of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria, heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, by Gavrilo Princip, a Serbian nationalist. Austria-Hungary's resulting demands against the Kingdom of Serbia activated a sequence of alliances. Within weeks the major European powers were at war; their global empires meant that the conflict soon spread worldwide. By the war's end, four major imperial powers—Germany, Russia, Austria-Hungary, and the Ottoman Empire—had been militarily and politically defeated, with the latter two ceasing to exist as autonomous entities. The revolutionized Soviet Union emerged from the Russian Empire, while the map of central Europe was completely redrawn into numerous smaller states. The League of Nations ...

World War One - Tanks

A video with footage of World War One tanks and the men who worked along-side with them. This video has taken many forms. It first had narration and then it had written facts, but both of these didn't seem to work. The music also went through several different directions with no pleasing results. Yes we know it still isn't the best it can be but forget about the music and just enjoy this rare and intresting footage.

Poison gas in World War I

The use of poison gas in World War I was a major military innovation. The gases ranged from disabling chemicals, such as tear gas and the severe mustard gas, to lethal agents like phosgene and chlorine. This chemical warfare was a major component of the first global war and first total war of the 20th century. The killing capacity of gas, however, was limited — only 4% of combat deaths were due to gas. Because it was possible to develop effective countermeasures against gas attacks, it was unlike most other weapons of the period. In the later stages of the war, as the use of gas increased, its overall effectiveness diminished. This widespread use of these agents of chemical warfare, and wartime advances in the composition of high explosives, gave rise to an occasionally expressed view of World War I as "the chemists' war".

It could happen again: World War I Christmas Truce

I love this story. In World War I, German, French, English & Scottish soldiers laid down their weapons in an unofficial cease fire to celebrate Christmas Eve together... they exchanged gifts and saw each other as brothers and that peace lasted for two more days. They even prayed together and played soccer. This is one of the greatest miracles and showed that all men, no matter their creed, culture or political view, wants the same thing: PEACE!! When I listened to this song by Collin Ray, back in 1996, I couldn't believe that there wasn't a movie about it yet, but finally someone made one and it's called JOYEUX NOELLE. It's really beautiful and one of the best movies I've ever seen so I included some pics from that movie in the video. "If it could happen then, it could happen again..." Note: I don't own the rights to this song so please let me know if there is a problem using it this way so I will take the video down inmediately. Thank you.
