Wanamaker Organ Day 2009 - Walt Strony - "Over the Rainbow"

The Wanamaker Organ has 466 ranks, and is the largest playable pipe organ in the world. Commanding these huge resources is a massive console with six ivory keyboards and 729 color-coded stop tablets. There are 168 piston buttons under the keyboards and 42 foot controls. The console weighs 2.5 tons; the entire instrument weighs 287 tons. The smallest pipe is a quarter-inch in length. More than 8000 pipes were added to the Organ between 1911 and 1917, and from 1924 to 1930 an additional 10000 pipes were installed, bringing the total number of pipes today to 28500. This was the grand finale of Wanamaker Organ Day 2007 with Florida's Singing Sons Boychoir - Craig Denison, director; the Philadelphia Brass; and Peter Richard Conte at the 461 rank pipe organ. The sound was too immense to be captured by a small camera. You have to hear it in person!

Virgil Fox † Come sweet death † Wanamaker Organ.

Komm' Susser Tod (Come sweet death) by JS Bach. The definitive version by Virgil Fox playing the Wanamaker organ (Audio) Virgil Fox did this arrangement specially for the Wanamaker organ. Bach's image of death was softened by a transcending faith. Therefore Virgil Fox arranged the second verse of of this piece to say: On entering the kingdom of God, death is like the most brilliant sunset one can imagine. Fierce colours fill the sky; but through all these colours, an even brighter light shines from the place which is after death. I understand there was originally only one verse but Virgil added the second verse. Google say that Virgil Fox worked in collaboration with Robert Hebble arranging this piece for organ. It certainly demonstrates the power of the magnificent Wanamaker organ. THIS MUSIC SHOULD REALLY BE HEARD ON A GOOD SOUND SYSTEM. My lifelong school mate Michael had cancer and diabetes and he was extremely ill towards the end of his life. He insisted on staying at home but the silly night nurse didn't check his blood sugar level. He was taken to hospital in a diabetic coma but insulin brought him back. Michael was very frail and weak but he was anxious to tell me something. While in the coma he said he was floating in a dark void, pain free and very peaceful. He said he was slowly moving into a beautiful white light. A voice said, MICHAEL, GO BACK but he wanted to keep moving into the light. I asked him if it was a male or female voice but he couldn't say, it was ...

The Wanamaker Organ sounds especially good in this versionHundreds of shoppers were startled during the daily concert on the world's largest Wanamaker Organ when 688 singers standing incognito in their midst burst into Handel's Hallelujah Chorus. Sponsored by the Opera Company of Philadelphia and Macy's the event featured numerous area musical groups, organists Peter Richard Conte and Fred Haas, and support from the Friends of the Wanamaker Organ. Held at noon in the Grand Court at Macy's palatial Philadelphia department store in the John Wanamaker building on October 30, 2010.

I videotaped Keith, and old friend from High School, in the early 1980's using a portable VHS recorder at a noontime recital at Wanamaker's in Philadelphia. Keith died in a tragic airplane crash in 1989 in Colorado which cut short an amazing musical career.

1996 Original Wanamaker Light Show 1 of 2

Part 2: www.youtube.com For full history of the Wanamaker Light Show: www.wanamakerorgan.com June 21 1995, the Wanamaker franchise was acquired by the May Company after which the Wanamaker's name was removed from the Philadelphia store and replaced with Hecht's. Like many in Philadelphia, my family had made it a tradition to go see the Wanamaker Light Show every year. Fearing that the new owners would discontinue the light show, my Dad brought our newly purchased VHS camcorder to the Grand Court, sat on the floor, and captured the light show in its full glory preserving it, at least, in our family forever. Fortunately, Macy's has realized the Philadelphia treasure that is the light show, and has ensured its survival with LED, installation, and computer system upgrades. This video is from 1996 and presents the light show as many remember it; with the Dancing Water fountains, incandescent lights, the original Magic Christmas Tree, and the March of the Toys segment that is absent from the light show today (introduced in 1985 as a promotion for the Wanamaker Rudi Bears). The only portion missing from this video, unfortunately, is the narration of John Facenda. The original narration contained the Wanamaker name in the opening message, and was therefore re-recorded with a similar sounding male voice to align with the Hechts renaming. The Wanamaker Organ did not play during the finale, I suspect they did not play the organ for each finale as they do today. Christmas in the ...

This is the sixth and last piece on the noontime recital that I videotaped in the early 1980s; it's the Finale from Widor's Symphony No. 2, many thanks to chwidder for identifying the piece. Keith was a phenomenal organist, a very funny guy and a good friend; the world lost a great artist when he and his wife were killed in an airplane accident in Colorado in 1989.

Keith Chapman: Handel Concerto in F on Wanamaker Organ

This was recorded on VHS video in the early 1980's during a noontime recital. Keith held a BS in Music from Curtis, MS from Temple and a DMA from Combs College of Music. He and his wife were killed in a tragic airplane accident in Colorado in 1989, cutting short what would have been an amazing career in organ performance and composistion. The title in the video clip is incorrect, it should have read "Keith Chapman plays the Handel Concerto in F on the Wanamaker Grand Court Organ".

Elgar's Pomp & Circumstance March No. 1 (Land of hope and glory) and some people do not like this version. Well I do...At times Virgil was a flash showman but he was a quite brilliant organist. I have found that the people who criticise him are these 2 bit organists, and I do detect the green eyed monster.

Joshua Stafford, a student at the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia plays "Jupiter" from Gustav Holst's "The Planets". Ken Cowan returns the favor by turning the pages for Joshua.
