Warsaw In Your Pocket - Warsaw Uprising (Powstanie Warszawskie)

warsaw.inyourpocket.com Warsaw In Your Pocket editor Alex Webber at the memorial to the Warsaw Uprising. Sightseeing and Warsaw dont usually go together, and the blame for that falls on her citizens. While some cities may have been happy to wait out Nazi occupation, the Warsaw locals were having none of that. The ensuing uprising which took place in 1944 would become both the most glorious and tragic episode in the citys history. Doomed from the outset the Warsaw Uprising enraged Hitler, and his retribution proved swift and brutal. Warsaw was to be wiped from the face of the map, and his cronies set about their orders with a zealous fury. While Red Army tanks stood stoically stationed across the river the Nazis set about blasting western Warsaw from the map. Anything deemed of cultural importance was dynamited, and whole districts were set on fire. By the time liberation arrived, over 90% of the city lay in total ruin. I have seen many towns destroyed, but nowhere have I been faced with such destruction, commented a visibly moved Eisenhower on a later visit to the city. That the city still stands at all is tribute enough to the indefatigable spirit of the Polish capital. More about the Warsaw Uprising here warsaw.inyourpocket.com

Poland: Warsaw, Old Town Square (Part 3)

Old Town Market Square ... is by far the most popular place for resting and walking for both Varsovians and tourists. The old and charming architecture, quaint cafes and restaurants, small and enticing shops create a unique atmosphere that is not found in other cities in Europe. When the weather is warm, the square becomes filled with cafe tables and artists performing outside. Until the end of 18th century the Old town market square was the most important place in Warsaw. Regular fairs and festivities were held here. During World War II the market square turned into rubbles - but after many years of reconstruction it was restored to its original beauty. The Old town is the best place for walks. Most of this area is closed to traffic and it a paradise for pedestrians. Most interesting walks are in the vicinity of the market square and Royal Castle square. Here you will find many narrow, cobbled streets with quaint antique shops, cafes, and beautiful old houses. Piwna Street takes you across much of the Old Town and passes through multiple tourist attractions. Almost every building you will see in the Old Town will be old with unique architecture. Old Town is a blend of different styles - from gothic to baroque. Barbakan Warszawski (The Warsaw Barbican) ... a semicircular fortified outpost and one of few remaining relics of the complex network of historic fortifications that once encircled Warsaw. Located between the Old and New Towns, it is a major tourist attraction ...

Warsaw, Poland: Heroes, Memorials, and Restoration

Before the war, Warsaw's old town square was one of the most happening spots in central Europe. By 1945, nearly two-thirds of the Warsaw's pre-war population was dead and not a building was standing in the old town. Today, the thriving city of Warsaw has been painstakingly restored and is a living memorial to its two heroic uprisings during WWII. Warsaw - Poland

Warsaw (Warszawa) is the capital of Poland. In 1939, Germany on September 1 and the Soviet Union on September 17 invaded Poland. The Battle of Warsaw started on September 1 with huge aerial bombardments by the Luftwaffe. Fighting on land started on September 8, and lasted until September 28, when the Polish garrison under Gen. Walerian Czuma capitulated. On October 1 the Wehrmacht entered the city, which started a period of German occupation. Warsaw, as was its tradition under foreign occupation, soon became the main center of resistance. In 1943, the Germans defeated the Uprising in the Jewish Ghetto resulting in a total annihilation of this district. After the defeat of the Warsaw Uprising in 1944, the city was given a death sentence. The population that had survived up to that point was expelled or deported to concentration camps. The Germans began the systematic destruction of the town. An estimated 650000 of Warsaw's people lost their lives and 85 percent of the urban fabric was destroyed as a result of the war. After the war, Warsaw rose from the ashes like a phoenix and was rebuilt with the heroic effort of Polish citizens.

The November Uprising 1830 / Powstanie Listopadowe

No copyright infringement intended. The Congress of Vienna brought the existence of the Duchy of Warsaw to an end and essentially divided Poland once again. Despite numerous protests by various Polish politicians who actively supported the personal union, Grand Duke Constantine had no intention of observing the constitution, one of the most liberal in Europe at that time. In 1830, the constitution of 1815 was a dead letter, secret police were everywhere, and censorship was severe. Polish organizations were persecuted and Russians had largely replaced Poles in administrative positions. The tense situation in the kingdom was ignited by Russia's mobilization of the Polish army to suppress revolutionary uprisings in France and Belgium. Cadets at the military academy seized their armory and then the Russian arsenal at Warsaw in late November, 1830, which sparked an uprising which eventually grew to about 70000 Polish, Lithuanian and Ruthenian combatants facing about 180000 - 200000 Tsarist troops. In March of 1831 Edgar Allan Poe attempted to come to Poland as he had learned about the November Uprising. Poe intended to match the Polish army then. Due to his relegation from the West Point Academy, his attempts were unfruitful. In spite of a promising start, delaying the abolition of serfdom and serious mishandling of the military operations bungled the opportunity. For a while victory actually lay in their grasp but indecision on the part of the Polish leaders led to defeat ...

Warsaw is also known as the "phoenix city", as it received extensive damage during World War II, and rebuilt with the effort of Polish citizens. Warsaw has given its name to the Warsaw Confederation, Warsaw Pact, Warsaw Convention, Treaty of Warsaw and the Warsaw Uprising. ( source Wikipedia )

German Bishops Compare Ramallah to the Warsaw Ghetto

On Friday 27 members of the German Bishop's Conference that was visiting Israel, made a first-time historic visit to Yad Vashem--the Holocaust memorial museum in Jerusalem. Does that sound like a nice gesture to you? After the visit to Yad Vashem the German Bishop's went to Ramallah. Ramallah is a refugee camp for Palestinians, but the words "refugee camp" can be deceiving. It is really a fairly modern city of 57000 residents. Life in Ramallah is not pleasant, suicide bombers have repeatedly come from the city and blown themselves up in places like Tel-Aviv and Jerusalem, due to this the Israeli army set-up checkpoints for those arriving and leaving the city. Recently armed Palestinian terrror gangs Hamas and Fatah have been battling it out on Ramallah's streets. It is stunning however that the German Catholic Bishops compared life in Ramallah to the Holocaust and particularly the Warsaw Ghetto. According to YNET news Bishop Gregor Maria Franz Hanke said: "This morning we saw pictures of the Warsaw Ghetto at Yad Vashem and this evening we are going to the Ramallah ghetto." Under the headline: "Bishops equate Israel's actions to Holocaust", YNET reported: "The delegation's visit to Ramallah took place several hours after their visit to Yad Vashem and several of the bishops chose to equate the situation in the Palestinian Authority with the Holocaust." The Bishop of Augsburg who was once under the spiritual leadership of Pope Benedict, said of the Palestinian areas: "Cages ...

Similar vehicle was captured by the Polish Home Army and used during the Uprising against the german forces. The vehicle which took part in Uprising was named "Szary Wilk" ("Grey Wolf"), after the callsign of its commander who died during the failed (sadly) attempt to take the University of Warsaw from the german hands. Before that the vehicle was named "Jaś" ("Johny") after the callsign of commander of the company which took it from the german hands. A Kneeling Chancellor of Germany Puts Japan and Japanese In Great Shames

A Kneeling German Premier Puts Japan and Japanese In Shames A kneeling German Premier.

What The Nazis Did To The Jews At Sobibor / True Story Dramatization Film Movie / Documentary

Escape From Sobibor (1987) public domain video. Producer: Jack Gold. Award winning movie. Gut-wrenching and riviting through the entire view this dramatization of how Jewish civilians and Jewish-Russian soldiers managed to escape the Sobibor death camp is an emotionally charged and well done movie. It is both painful to watch as a reminder of the history of the German-agenda during Hitler's reign as well as inspiring for eventual freedom achieved. Not only were Alan Arkin and Rutger Hauer excellent in their roles but so was the entire cast. Alan Arkin and Rutger Hauer star in this award winning movie about the successful mass escape of 300 prisoners from the Sobibor Nazi death camp. Sobibor was a Nazi German extermination camp set up in the Lublin region of occupied Poland as part of Operation Reinhard; the official German name was SS-Sonderkommando Sobibor. Jews, including Jewish Soviet prisoners of war (POWs), and possibly Gypsies were transported to Sobibor by rail, and suffocated in gas chambers that were fed with the exhaust of a petrol engine. One source states that up to 200000 people were killed at Sobibor. Thomas Blatt claims that "In the Hagen court proceedings against former Sobibor Nazis, Professor Wolfgang Scheffler, who served as an expert, estimated the total figure of murdered Jews at a minimum of 250000. After a successful revolt in October 1943 about half of the 600 prisoners in Sobibor escaped; the camp was closed and planted with trees days afterwards ...
