The trade cannot become official until the start of the new league year, which begins next week (4 pm ET on Tuesday, the first official day of free agency). Under the deal, the Redskins and Rams will swap first-rounders this year, sources said. The Rams also will receive two future first-round picks and a second-round pick, Rams vice president and chief operating officer Kevin Demoff confirmed to The Sports Xchange after the story first broke. Redskins owner Daniel Snyder had targeted Peyton Manning in free agency, but Manning did not reciprocate interest in playing in Washington. With Andrew Luck all but a foregone conclusion to go to the Colts at No. 1 overall, the Redskins then moved quickly to make sure they could acquire the other most coveted quarterback of the draft. Assuming the Redskins take RG3, the Minnesota Vikings would then be on the clock with the No. 3 pick. Their short list likely includes offensive tackle Matt Kalil of USC, wide receiver Justin Blackmon of Oklahoma State, and cornerback Morris Claiborne of LSU. The Washington Redskins got rid of two coaches (WR coach-Keenan McCardell and Safety coach-Steven Jackson {I have no clue why I called him Johnson in the video}). This gives the Redskins a pretty good collection of coaches and also introduces a great young defensive mind into the franchise to direct the secondary from now on. Morris had coached all of his professional career in Tampa Bay where he was fired a few short weeks ago after the Buccaneers finished their season 4-12.

This is old footage from 1972 that shows George Allen as Washington Redskins head coach and running-back and kickoff return specialist Herb Mul-Key (#28) filling in for an injured running back Larry Brown against the Buffalo Bills in 1972. Mul-Key was a walk-on who would have had a much more notable career if he wasn't always playing hurt. OJ Simpson is also shown briefly in this video as well as old-timers Sonny Jurgensen and Billy Kilmer are also shown but the commentator seems to focus on Herb Mul-Key. I am not sure, but I think the last clip shown is Herb Mul-Key running back a 97-yard kickoff return against the St. Louis Cardinals in 1973. Matt Bowen played safety in the NFL from 2000 to 2006 and now writes for the National Football Post and here: The Washington Redskins are paying premium to put themselves in a position to draft quarterback Robert Griffin III, agreeing to surrender their first (No.6 overall) and second round picks this year and three first round selections (2012, 2013, 2014) to the St. Louis Rams in return for the No. 2 overall selection this year. I can't sit here and try to argue that the Redskins and owner Dan Snyder didn't overpay. We can all see that for ourselves. This club just mortgaged its future to move up four spots in the draft. However, can we really blame them? The Redskins are desperate at the position. And outside of making a play for free agent Peyton Manning, getting a deal done to target Griffin is the right move. I'm not an NFL scout, but I have seen enough of Griffin last season to know that he has tremendous upside. And as I wrote last week, I would love to coach the former Baylor quarterback. With his unique skill set, there are endless possibilities from a play calling and game plan perspective. Plus, with the Redskins and coach Mike Shanahan, the team can draft a quarterback they can develop.
