Ancient West African Megacities

Centuries BEFORE the coming of Islam and before the days of the Songhay, Mali and Ghana Empires (and thus before Timbuktu was built), there were some massive cities in the Niger basin region which rivalled those of Mesopotamia.

West African leaders head to Mali for talks

A delegation of army chiefs from the Economic Community of West African States bloc has arrived in Bamako ahead of a team of six heads of state as Mali's neighbours attempt to restore constitutional order after last week's coup. Led by Blaise Compaore, president of Burkina Faso, the ECOWAS leaders' team is expected to arrive on Thursday even as several thousand people took to the streets of the capital in support of the coup and to protest against the possible use of force by Mali's neighbours. The visit comes as toppled president Amadou Toumani Toure, whose whereabouts have been unknown since he was overthrown on March 22, told the AFP news agency that he was safe in Bamako and was not being held by the coup leaders. Al Jazeera's Hashem Ahelbarra reports from Bamako.

Hebrew Israelites in West Africa - Pt. 5 of 5 -The End

This video adds prophecy and history as the final proof of the flee of Israelites from Israel to West Africa "It seems certain," declares Sir EA Wallis Budge, "that classical historians and geographers called the whole region from India to Egypt, both countries inclusive, by the name of Ethiopia, and in consequence they regarded all the dark-skinned and black peoples who inhabited it as Ethiopians. Mention is made of Eastern and Western Ethiopians and it is probable that the Easterners were Asiatics and the Westerners Africans." (History of Ethiopia, Vol. I., Preface, by Sir EA Wallis Budge.)

The bronzes of Benin are the outcome of a long tradition of bronze casting which can be traced back over more than two millennia to the ancient Nok people, who lived on the plains of Jos and the Yoruba people who flourished between the 10th and the 19th Centuries In the south and west of Nigeria. Among the oldest known African sculptures are terracotta figures created by the Nok people around 500 AD. Superb bronze and terra cotta heads were also made in what is now Ife, Nigeria from the 1200's onwards. The 'Obas' held a monopoly of sculptures in brass - Chiefs were only allowed ancestral figures in terra cotta and metalworkers were the servants of the 'Oba'. Benin art was thus predominantly Royal and so closely tied to the rituals used in service of divine Kingship that it underwent few modifications over the generations. There can be little doubt that this West African art was an indigenous development fuelled by the need for lifelike images of Royalty for funerary rituals and the cult of ancestors from whom the Kings derived their significant power and authority. In the former Kingdom of Benin, Western Nigeria, great artists produced high quality hand made bronze sculptured figures and heads during the 1400's and up to the early part of the 1700's. The art of Benin is close in feeling to contemporary Buddhist art in India and South-east Asia. Few people outside Africa knew about African sculpture until the 1900's when it became a major influence on western art. The ...

Streets & People of Abidjan. IVORY COAST (Côte d'Ivoire). West Africa

Ivory Coast's Danané and Abidjan through the eyes of a 20-something Australian hoodlum, veteran of over 50 countries, on his first visit to Africa. And who quickly discovered a place inhabited by some of the most delightful people on the globe. A place where, stranded late on night one in a rural town called Danané, an Islamic teenage boy invited him to sleep in his family's compound. A family who gave him a bed, refused to take money, and in the morning as a group walked him to the bus station carrying his bag without being asked. Where, in the capital of Abidjan on just his fourth day in the country, as he laid in the middle of a four-lane motorway beside his faulty hired moto scooter, right lower leg shattered in four places from the direct impact of a 4WD that hit him at 60-80km/hr, alone, unable to move, unable to speak French, no travel insurance, thinking: "I hope they don't have to amputate my leg," and wondering how he might get to a hospital, locals stopped cars to protect him from oncoming traffic and call an ambulance. Where, after an operation drilling eight screws into his Tibia an iron plate to hold it together, a local woman he met the night before the accident not only visited, but took him into her own one-room apartment, plus suspended the business she runs for a week to nurse him, cook for him, and chase down police reports and a Liberian driver who bribed police at the scene. How Much Can West Africans be Trusted

AFRICAN COUNTRIES RECOGNIZING CRIMINAL WESTERN PUPPET ADMINISTRATION IN LIBYA: Botswana, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Tunisia, Senegal, Gabon, Burkina Faso, Benin, Gambia and Djibouti. ********* The African nations that have defied the African Union's position of not recognizing the criminal rebel government put into power by the Europeans and Americans certainly know the truth about what the rebels were doing to black Africans, some who were from their own countries. They also know the truth about the rebels assaults upon police stations in Eastern Libya and then other areas of Libya while calling it "peaceful protests". Why then are a few African leaders doing what their forefathers did hundreds of years ago when they collaborated with Europeans and Arabs to carry away and enslave entire groups of Africans? Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe has done the right thing and even the farming in the country is now coming back up to par. Muammar Gaddafi is a giant in the world and shall remain so. Anyone in their right minds would think long and hard when all of the former enslavers and colonizers are united against one African leader who has done legendary deeds in Africa. Nelson Mandela knows this and the people of Angola, Uganda and other countries know this. What's wrong with the West Africans mentioned in this video? Should we boycott those countries?

Globe Trekker - Globe Trekker- West Africa: Ghana & the Ivory Coast featuring Megan McCormick

Traveler Megan McCormick journeys to West Africa, where 500 years ago Europeans uncovered bounties of gold in Ghana (formerly the Gold Coast) and ivory in the Cote d'Ivoire. Her trip begins in Accra, the capital of Ghana. Here Megan visits an intriguing coffin shop and is invited to attend a funeral. For the Ga people it's traditional to be buried in a coffin which symbolizes what you did in life. Twenty miles from Accra is Kokrobite where Megan meets the famous drummer Mustapha Addy. He the runs the cultural center where he teaches Megan the basics of talking drums which have been used for centuries as a means of communicating between tribes and villages. At the Mole Game Reserve in the northern region of Ghana, it's possible to walk around amongst the animals accompanied by a ranger. Megan is lucky enough to spy warthogs, antelopes and elephants. Kumasi is the birthplace of the famous Kente cloth and weaving the vibrant textile is a family business, passed through generations for 400 years. They still use traditional methods based on observing a spider spinning its web. The cloth is part of Ghanaian national dress and is worn by town elders on special occasions. The nearby goldmines at Obuasi are some of the largest in the world. Every day half a million dollars worth of gold is brought to the surface and the Ashanti people who have been mining in Ghana for centuries became incredibly wealthy. Back in Kumasi Megan visits a goldsmith who makes trinkets for the Ashanti ...

10000 Girls, documentary film project, Senegal West Africa

For indiegogo fundraising: www.indiegogo.com Filmmaker Konda Mason and photographer/cinematographer Angela Sevin, in cooperation with 10000 Girls project, will travel to Senegal and work with a group of young women for 4 weeks in January/February 2011, producing film and media, and documenting the story of 10000 Girls. In many areas of rural Senegal, West Africa, most girls are encouraged to stay at home and work to support their brothers as they get an education. An education in most of Africa costs a high percentage of the total family income. They must pay for all school supplies, uniforms and fees. Consequently, if the family can afford it, resources are spent on the boys rather than the girls. Facing a future of menial labor and early marriage, a young girl by the name of Mame Guede, at the age of nine, took matters into her own hands by finding a woman who was willing to teach her as long as she could pay for her school supplies. That person was Viola Vaughn, an African American woman from Detroit, living in Senegal. With an entrepreneurial spirit and passion for learning, Mame Guede and the group of girls who joined her, found resources and started businesses to enable themselves and other young girls to fulfill their dream of an education and a thriving future. Having educated thousands of girls through the collaborative system of supporting and empowering each other financially and emotionally, a goal of educating 10000 Girls is becoming a reality. Djembe - Making a Djembe - Ghana, West Africa

This is a video collection of "Classic Djembes" and "Drum Circle Djembes" being hand crafted in Ghana, Africa by the Africa Heartwood Project. Description of the Africa Heartwood Project: Drums with heart. Drums that make a difference. Drums that were and are part of something living, dynamic, eternal. Each Heartwood djembe is a symbol of hope and sacrifice and partnership. In a market based economy where the imperative is to maximize profit at any cost, Africa Heartwood Project is using the free market as a humanitarian tool to generate sustainable livelihoods for hard-working artisans in West Africa who otherwise would not have access to markets large enough to provide for their families. With a long-term commitment to individual drum and instrument builders, AHP has given hundreds of hours of skills training and business mentorship, helped extend micro-loans and donated funds valuing thousands of dollars to purchase tools, buy land, build workshops, and purchase raw materials, and has helped to established solid distribution channels that will ensure that the artisans can count on income next month, next year, and through to the next generation. African Heartwood Project labors on behalf of the entrepreneurial artisans to keep their hands busy, bellies full, and hope alive. www.DjembeDirect.com/AHP/

History recalls the Caliphates in West Africa, a brief overview

3 minute brief on approximately 800 years of West African empies not usually covered by western historians. Its an overview of the west african caliphates namely Kanem borno, the Hausa states. Other empires existed such as Kwararafa, Oyo, Kwara, Benin etc etc. Influencial figures include, Queen Amina and Usman Dan Fodio, well worth researching all the above. The greatest of the states was The Sokoto Caliphate because of its reach and Usmans Jihad had large rammifications during that period. Most of the historical events are documented in the Kano Chronicles. The end of these Caliphates was in 1906 when the British and French decided to end slavery in Africa, compounded by colonial ambition. The region would then be under indirect rule until independence.
