"Blackberry," a male Orca from J pod, jumps within feet of our small Zodiak boat then whips it's tail right next to us and hits the boat hard, video gives no justice to it. The whales from J pod were migrating south a few weeks earlier than normal. So it was an unexpected treat. The guides told us not to expect anything much that day, then we ended up spending hours upon hours having orcas all around us. This was a crazy close encounter. Never had a whale that close to me before, felt like it was going to land on top of us, the video makes it seem a little farther away than it really was, in reality it was a human body length away. Didn't realize the danger we were in until after the fact. The very large sea creature would have capsized the 12 foot raft easily. Video shot by Northwest University students. Japanese and American officials discussed taking action to weaken Sea Shepherd, a prominent anti-whaling group, according to the documents released by WikiLeaks on Monday. The diplomatic cables, dated January 1, show Japanese officials repeatedly told US counterparts the group's actions were making whaling a political issue and hurting any chance of a compromise on the numbers of whales killed each year. Meanwhile, Sea Shepherd released a video purportedly showing Japanese whalers shooting water cannons at anti-whaling activists on Saturday. The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society is chasing the Japanese hunting fleet in the hopes of interrupting Japan's annual whale hunt, which kills up to 1000 whales annually and typically lasts from December to February. Japan hunts whales under the research exemption to a 1986 worldwide ban on commercial hunts. Critics say there is no reason to kill the animals, and the research programme amounts to commercial whaling in disguise because surplus meat from the hunt is sold domestically. I was out fishing on a boat named Gulfstream on 6/18/11 and we spotted two whale sharks as we were trolling for Kingfish and Barracuda. The sharks came right up to the boat to check us out. They were both at least 25 ft long. The Gulfstream is a charter boat that fishes out of Clearwater Municiple Marina. They are part of the Gulfstream 2 charters fleet. I would recommend them to everyone!

AMAZING reworked video clip that shows in GREAT detail where the whale bolts up from the sea and hits the yacht. Stunning! A Southern RIght Whale jumped up from the sea, as they often do, but most unexpectedly landed on the sailboat Intrepid, in the ocean a bit north of Cape Town, S-Africa. Amazingly, someone caught a video clip from a nearby boat, and this is a reworking of it, done independently, where the collision is stabilized and also zoomed into to show the details! The whale that smashed down on the boat is believed to have weighted 40 tons! The two man crew, Ms. Paloma Werner and Mr Ralph Mothes, were unharmed after the incident.

This is a video of our friendly Grey Whale encounter in San Ignacio lagoon, which is situated on the pacific side of Baja California in Mexico. The 'friendly' whale behavior is taught by the mothers to their calf's and began in this lagoon as a unique behavior in the 1980's. Only recently has the behavior been observed in other lagoons by calves (now grown up) who learned it in San Ignacio. I took this video on March 13th 2011 around noon from locally provided (and government mandated) skiffs. Our base of operations is the Searcher which is anchored a mile or two away. The lagoon itself is over 15 miles across and requires negotiating large breakers to get into it. Ships larger than the Searcher (a 95 foot fishing boat) cannot get in. The Mexican government limits the number of Pangas that can be operating in the lagoon at any given moment and essentially disallows any non-pangas chasing of the whales. Many of the Pangas drivers have been here for years and are able to recognize specific whales from prior years. This arrangement provides an economic incentive for the locals to preserve the area. The panga drivers are very careful not to disturb the whales. The whales must choose to approach the boat, not the other way around. If a whale is not interested the drivers do not press the matter. Only a portion of the lagoon is open to boat traffic. The whales get most of the lagoon for themselves without human interference. In addition, the drivers recognize specific behaviors <b>...</b>

We have been on whale watching trips off Lahaina, Maui for over 20 years and never had one like this. Boats are not allowed to go closer than 100 yards but if a whale comes closer than that the captain must turn the engine off. That is what happened with this adolescent whale. He came right next to the boat and circled around and under it for over an hour. He was obviously just as interested in the two-legged beasts with hand-held single eyed cameras looking at him, as we were with the whale. He seemed to be playing games with us watching us humans rush from one side of the boat to the other has he circled and dived. We even got photos when he opened his mouth so we could see his baleen, something I am told is very rare. There are also photos of the hair follicles and acorn branacles. www.ComingsBirds.com

It was a hot day and the dogs really wanted to jump on the whales back. Finally they went for it. The grey whale circled around the boat inspecting its new aquatic friends. We played with this whale for almost an hour it stayed very near the boat until a pod of 15 Orcas had safely passed. Spectacular and awesome, glad I had my camera. Whales are beautiful and gentle by nature.
