Walt Whitman "The Wound Dresser" Literary discussion animation

Heres a virtual movie of the great Walt Whitman reading an excerpt from the letters he wrote to his mother and to The New York Times whilst he was serving as a nurse during the American Civil War in the mid 1860's. In December 1862 Whitman saw the name of his brother George (1892-1901), a member of the 51st New York Infantry, listed among the wounded at Fredericksburg. Whitman rushed from Brooklyn to the Washington area to search the hospitals and encampments for George. This was his indoctrination to the ghastly consequences of warfare. He began to make acquaintance of the soldiers and note accounts of those who had served in battle. George had fought earlier at Antietam, where in September 1862 more than 23000 men were killed, wounded, or missing in action in the bloodiest battle of the Civil War. Whitman was pickpocketed on his journey to Washington, and arrived "without a dime." With the help of friends, he secured a pass behind military lines. On December 29, 1862, a relieved Whitman wrote to his mother that he had "found George alive and well" in a camp at Falmouth, across the river from Fredricksburg, Virginia. He also reported that he had decided to stay in the area and find work. He soon accompanied wounded soldiers back to Washington. Whitman and his "dear, dear, mother" were extremely close. He wrote to her and other family members throughout the war. Whitman was forty-three years old in 1862-1863, when he began volunteering in Washington, DC, war hospitals. He ...

Walt Whitman "A Noiseless Patient Spider" poem animation

Heres a virtual movie of the great Walt Whitman reading his much loved and profoundly wise little poem "A Noiseless Patient Spider " . A Noiseless Patient Spider is a series of observations made by the speaker relating to a spider and his actions, whether figurative or literal. Through the observations of the spider the speaker relates his point of view about human souls. For example, when the speaker says that the spider launched forth filament, filament, filament, out of itself he is speaking both about a spider making a web and his soul attempting to make connections with the world, to feel a part of something, or find its place in the universe. The first stanza is directed more towards the spider, symbolizing the speakers soul while the second is more literal as the speaker directly addresses his soul Walt Whitman (1819-1892) was a great traveller around the continent and a truly American poet. He was proud of the new nation, its races and its lands, its scenes and cities, its territorial and economic growth and believed in the mission America had in the world. Walt Whitman (1819-1892 was born in Long Island, New York, the son of a Quaker carpenter. Whitman's mother was descended from Dutch farmers. In Whitman's childhood there were slaves employed on the farm. Whitman was early on filled with a love of nature. Walt Whitman "In All People I See Myself" Poem animation

Heres a virtual movie of the great Walt Whitman reading "In All People I See Myself" from his poem"Song of Myself" a poem by Walt Whitman that is included in his lifelong work Leaves of Grass. "Self"The "self" of the poem's speaker - the "I" of the poem - should not be limited to or confused with the person of the historical Walt Whitman. The persona described has transcended the conventional boundaries of self. "I pass death with the dying, and birth with the new-washed babe .... and am not contained between my hat and boots" (section 7). There are several other quotes from the poem that make it apparent that Whitman does not consider the narrator to represent a single individual. Rather, he seems to be narrating for all: "in all people I see myself, none more and not one a barleycorn less/and the good or bad I say of myself I say of them" (Section 20) "it is you talking just as much as myself...I act as the tongue of you" (Section 47) "I am large, I contain multitudes." (Section 51) "For every atom belonging to me as good belongs to you." (Section 1) Two articles, Alice L. Cook's "A Note on Whitman's Symbolism in 'Song of Myself'" and John B. Mason's "Walt Whitman Catalogues: Rhetorical Means for Two Journeys in 'Song of Myself'", give interpretations as to the meaning of the 'self' as well as its importance to the poem. Cook writes of the "concept of 'self' in its individual and universal aspects" while Mason discusses "the reader's involvement in the poet's movement ...

NANO WHITMAN

'Like' us on Facebook - on.fb.me PRESENTED BY LEE ANN McADOO Sprawled out on sleeping bags with his brothers, Nano spent "camp out" nights lying on the living room floor, entranced by the strumming of a Martin guitar and his mother's voice. The songs were traditional folk tunes or the classics of Joan Baez and Peter, Paul and Mary. At 11, Nano was accepted as a member of the Philadelphia Boys' Choir with whom he discovered the power of singing harmonies in some of the world's premier venues. Performing in the Sydney Opera House, Carnegie Hall, and accompanying Pavarotti in Philadelphia's Academy of Music were enough to lure Nano forever towards a life in music. Nano wrote his first song while still in the choir. Nano graduated from Harvard University with a degree in music composition. A life-changing trip in 9th grade to see The Who's Tommy on Broadway had always stuck with him and inspired Nano to write a rock opera for his undergraduate thesis. Due to Harvard's narrowly focused music program, he was forced to head across the river to The Berklee College of Music in order to find a mentor. Enjoying the best of both worlds, Nano completed and produced a performance of "Shine Like You," a rock opera in two acts, collecting a Berklee experience and a Harvard degree. The Philadelphia native relocated to Austin, TX in 2004 where he first gained attention as a solo artist. Currently, he has fully immersed himself in the heart of Austin's thriving music scene through ...

Heres a virtual movie of the great Walt Whitman reading "Mannahatta" from Leaves of Grass published in 1888. The poem is a tribute to the city he lived in Mannahatta, meaning "land of many hills,"the Native American name Whitman uses for New York City. ...The name Manhattan derives from the word Manna-hata, as written in the 1609 logbook of Robert Juet, an officer on Henry Hudson's yacht Halve Maen (Half Moon).[18] A 1610 map depicts the name as Manna-hata, twice, on both the west and east sides of the Mauritius River (later named the Hudson River). The word "Manhattan" has been translated as "island of many hills" from the Lenape language. Walt Whitman "O Captain! My Captain!" Poem animation

Heres an virtual movie of the great Walt Whitman reading his celebrated poem "O Captain! My Captain!" First published in New Yorks Saturday Press in November of 1865 . Walt Whitman (1819-1892) wrote this dirge for the death of Abraham Lincoln in 1865. Published to immediate acclaim in the New York City Saturday Press, "O Captain! My Captain!" was widely anthologized during his lifetime. In the 1880s, when Whitman gave public lectures and readings, he was asked to recite the poem so often that he said: "I'm almost sorry I ever wrote [it]," though it had "certain emotional immediate reasons for being." While Whitman is renowned as the most innovative of American poets, this poem is a rare example of his use of rhymed, rhythmically regular verse, which serves to create a somber yet exalted effect. Whitman had envisioned Lincoln as an archangel captain, and reportedly dreamed the night before the assassination about a ship entering harbor under full sail. Restlessly creative, Whitman was still revising "O Captain! My Captain!" decades after its creation.

Song of the Open Road by Walt Whitman (1/2)

Song of the Open Road by Walt Whitmans Song of the Open Road by Walt Whitman 1 AFOOT and light-hearted, I take to the open road, Healthy, free, the world before me, The long brown path before me, leading wherever I choose. Henceforth I ask not good-fortune—I myself am good fortune; Henceforth I whimper no more, postpone no more, need nothing, 5 Strong and content, I travel the open road. The earth—that is sufficient; I do not want the constellations any nearer; I know they are very well where they are; I know they suffice for those who belong to them. 10 (Still here I carry my old delicious burdens; I carry them, men and women—I carry them with me wherever I go; I swear it is impossible for me to get rid of them; I am filld with them, and I will fill them in return.) 2 You road I enter upon and look around! I believe you are not all that is here; 15 I believe that much unseen is also here. Here the profound lesson of reception, neither preference or denial; The black with his woolly head, the felon, the diseasd, the illiterate person, are not denied; The birth, the hasting after the physician, the beggars tramp, the drunkards stagger, the laughing party of mechanics, The escaped youth, the rich persons carriage, the fop, the eloping couple, 20 The early market-man, the hearse, the moving of furniture into the town, the return back from the town, They pass—I also pass—anything passes—none can be interdicted; None but are accepted—none but are dear to me. 3 You air that ...

INDIAN LOVE CALL ~ Slim Whitman 1951 .wmv

INDIAN LOVE CALL ~ Slim Whitman ~ Imperial Records~ 1951. INDIAN LOVE CALL was recorded by Slim Whitman on December 1, 1951 and released in early 1952. It had also been hit for Artie Shaw & His Orchestra, with vocals by Tony Pastor, on the Bluebird Records label back in the late 1930's. DEDICATED TO : Eva Mae Kirkland-Stahmer, a terrific lady, who gave her only copy of INDIAN LOVE CALL to me, just a pimply-faced kid at the time, just because I said I liked the way it sounded. I accepted it thankfully and I have taken care of it ever since then. Sadly, Eva passed away several years ago, but whenever I play the record, I think of her. This is also dedicated to Eva's grandson, Anthony R. Stahmer, for being a damn good pal since our junior high school days. Friends don't come any better. We used to try to do a two-part harmony on INDIAN LOVE CALL, but we sounded like hell, so we agreed to just let Slim do the singing on this one.
