St Helens are just 80 minutes away from a sixth successive Grand Final after outplaying defending champions Wigan Warriors in today's play-off tie at the DW Stadium. A special constable from Greater Manchester Police (GMP) has been convicted of assaulting an ex-solider during an attempted arrest in Wigan. Former L/Cpl Mark Aspinall had been ejected from a nightclub in Wigan when special constable Peter Lightfoot and two officers tried to arrest him. Lightfoot was convicted by a jury at Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court of assault occasioning actual bodily harm. Mark had been out for drinks with friends in Wigan, Lancs, and left the towns Walkabout bar at 2.40am on Sunday July 27. Special constable Lightfoot, 39 a volunteer officer whose main job is as a van driver and his two colleagues wrongly believed Mark was their man. He explained he had done nothing wrong, but they chased him and threw him to the floor. The footage opens with an unsteady Mark drunkenly standing in the street and calling out to the officers. The Wigan Casino was a nightclub in Wigan, Greater Manchester, England. Operating between 1973 and 1981, it was known as a primary venue for northern soul music. It carried forward the legacy created by clubs such as the Twisted Wheel in Manchester and Golden Torch in Tunstall, Stoke-on-Trent. It remains one of the most famous clubs in Northern England.[1] This England, a TV documentary about the venue, was filmed in 1977. In 1978, the American music magazine Billboard voted Wigan Casino "The Best Disco in the World", ahead of New York City's Studio 54[2]. Russ Winstanley and Dave Nowell wrote a history of the club, Soul Survivors, The Wigan Casino Story, which was published in 1996. A stage play by Mick Martin about the Wigan Casino years, Once upon a time in Wigan, debuted in February 2003 at the Contact Theatre in Manchester, and has since toured nationally. Midfielder Leon Britton has said Swansea City must beat teams such as Wigan Athletic if the Welsh side want to survive in the Premier League. Swansea's first ever Premier League game ended in a heavy 4-0 defeat at FA Cup winners Manchester City on Monday. But Britton believes the Swans can quickly bounce back on Saturday by beating Wigan, a team managed by former boss Roberto Martinez. "There's an opportunity for us," Britton told BBC Sport Wales. "We want to try and win every game, whether it's Man City away or Wigan at home. "As the season goes on and if we're near the bottom with these teams then you need to beat them, you don't want them pulling away from you. That's important. "The first home game for us in the Premier League with Roberto coming adds a little bit extra to the game. "Obviously Wigan last season just scraped through in the end in the last game of the season. "When you look at the top three or four teams it's obviously very difficult playing against them, the rest I think it's pretty even." Despite a goalless first half in their opening Premier League match, Swansea finally succumbed to sustained Manchester City pressure in the second half. Two goals from substitute Sergio Aguero and one apiece from Edin Dzeko and David Silva secured an impressive win for Roberto Mancini's side.
