On 23 August 1305, after was betrayed by Sir John de Menteith and turned over to the English, William Wallace was stripped naked and dragged through London at the heels of a horse to Elms at Smithfield. He was hanged but released while he was still alive, eviscerated and his bowels burnt before him, beheaded, his body was then cut into four parts. His preserved head (dipped in tar) was placed on a pike atop London Bridge. His limbs were displayed in Newcastle upon Tyne, Berwick-upon-Tweed, Stirling, and Aberdeen.
