Wings of Desire (1987) - Dir. Wim Wenders

'Wings of Desire' was the English title given to Wenders' 'Der Himmel über Berlin' (The Sky Over Berlin). Wenders' post-war Berlin is watched over by angels, invisible to all but children, who try to bring comfort to the city's inhabitants. One of the angels, Daniel, falls in love with a trapeze artist (Marian) and longs to become mortal. American actor Peter Falk, better known as 'Columbo' assists by explaining the joys of being human. Shot in black and white, the film changes to colour when the transformation is complete. The film was later remade by Hollywood as 'City of Angels' starring Nicolas Cage and Meg Ryan, but the original is far superior. See also: www.wim-wenders.com

"The Beauty of a Second" - Wim Wenders for Montblanc

190 years ago, Nicolas Rieussec recorded time to an accuracy of a fifth second for the first time - the chronograph was born. To celebrate this unique invention, Montblanc is announcing the one-of-a-kind "The Beauty of a Second" short-film contest presented by the famous film director Wim Wenders. Your challenge as a video artist is to "seize the moment". Everyone - professionals, amateurs, cell-phone camera enthusiasts -- is invited to capture a one-second long moving picture. The subject can be anything you consider as beautiful: a smile, a child's face, a flower, a piece of the world around you, as long as the video lasts only one second. Capture your second beauty now and get the chance to win a Montblanc Nicolas Rieussec Chronograph. Watch the video to receive further information. Don't forget: Every second counts.

Wim Wenders

Wim Wenders was born on the 14th of August, 1945, in Düsseldorf, Germany. After he graduated from the Gymnasium (high school) in Oberhausen, an industrial city in the Ruhr district, Wim began his studies in medicine (1963-64) and philosophy (1964-65) in Freiburg and Düsseldorf. However, he interrupted his academic education and decided to become a painter. He moved to Paris in October of 1966, where he failed his entry test at the Art Academy. Instead he worked as an engraver in the atelier of the American artist Johnny Friedlander in Montparnasse. During that time he also became a regular visitor of the Cinemathèque Francaise, saw up to 5 movies a day and more than a thousand films altogether and got hooked on cinema. Wim returned to Germany in 1967, worked briefly in the Düsseldorf office of United Artists and that autumn entered the "Hochschule für Fernsehen and Film" (Graduate School of Film and Television), which had just been founded in Munich. In 1976, he started "Road Movies Filmproduktion Inc" in Berlin, which produced over the years not only Wenders films, but was involved in more than a hundred productions and coproductions up to 2003. For a number years in the early 80s, Wim also had a production company in New York together with Chris Sievernich, Gray City Inc. While producing and directing through these various companies, Wim Wenders would become one of the major figures to emerge from the New German Cinema. In 1984 he also became a member of the "Akademie ...

For more clips like this, background to the clips, and a most enjoyable, all-around guide to "everything from high art to low trash and back again," visit the blog for the NYC cult cable-access show Media Funhouse, located here: www.mediafunhouse.blogspot.com Filmmaker Wim Wenders offers his opinions on editing in musical sequences in this segment from an interview conducted for the cult Manhattan cable-access program "Media Funhouse." He stresses his opposition to the standard MTV editing style, something he first wrote about publicly when he was a rock/film critic for German periodicals. Wenders' work with music in film has ranged from his earliest "road movies" where characters grooved on old 45s, to his excellent use of rock references in his quintessential thriller "The American Friend," to later documentaries about musicians like "The Buena Vista Social Club." The clip that illustrates his graceful visual style and underscores what he is talking about is from his underrated fictional diary-pic about a wandering sound man, "Lisbon Story" (1994). He decides to return to Germany, and while trying to book a flight, encounters a German woman and her nine year old daughter Alice doing the same. The three become friends (almost out of necessity) and while the mother asks Winter to mind Alice temporarily, it quickly becomes apparent that Alice will be his responsibility for longer than he expected. MUSICA CUBANA by WIM WENDERS(PART.1)

Pío Leyva (May 5, 1917 March 22, 2006), born Wilfredo Pascual, was a Cuban singer and the author of the well-known guaracha El Mentiroso ("The Liar"). Leyva was part of the Buena Vista Social Club, and composed some of Cubas best known standards. Leyva was born in Morón, Cuba in 1917. He won a bongo contest at the age of six and made his singing debut in 1932. He recorded over 25 albums since he signed his first contract with RCA Victor in 1950. Leyva sang with other Cuban artists such as Benny Moré, Bebo Valdés and Noro Morales and was a member of Estrellas de Areito and "Compay Segundo y Sus Muchachos."[1] Fellow musician Barbarito Torres said of Leyva: "Pio has always been a famous singer in Cuba. I've always admired him, not just for his talent, but because of his great personality. He's the inspiration."[2] Leyva took part in the 2004 film Música Cubana, which was marketed as a sequel to Buena Vista Social Club. Leyva died of a heart attack, in March 2006. PLOT The story begins with BVSCs (Independent charity working to help promote and develop voluntary and community organisations in the city) endearing octogenarian singer, Pio Leyva (real), who is on his way to a radio station to perform. On his way, he meets a cab driver, played by actor Barbaro Marin (fiction), who decides that, with the aid of Leyva, a new band would be formed called The Sons of Cuba (fiction). The rest of the film takes us along to find the new members of the band, who are selected from Cubas ...

A Notebook on Cities and Clothes Part 1

A cinematographic diary by Wim Wenders, 1989. "Fashion. I'll have nothing of it. At least that was my first reaction when the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris asked me to make a short film in the context of fashion. The world of fashion. I'm interested in the world, not in fashion! But, maybe I was too quick to put down fashion. Why not look at it without prejudice? Why not examine it like any other industry, like the movies for example? Maybe fashion and cinema had something in common. And something else -- this film would give me the opportunity to meet someone who had already aroused my curiosity, someone who worked in Tokyo [Fashion designer Yohji Yamamoto]. Filmmaking should just remain a way of life sometimes, like taking a walk, reading a newspaper, eating, writing notes, driving a car or shooting this film here, for instance, made from day to day, carried along by nothing other than its curiosity -- a notebook on cities and clothes." PLEASE EXPERIENCE IN HD! RIP Peter Falk. My 2nd donation to the youtube group: 1001 Movies To See Before You Die, by Steven Jay Schnieder. www.youtube.com From Criterion: "Bruno Ganz is Damiel, an angel perched atop buildings high over Berlin who can hear the thoughts—fears, hopes, dreams—of all the people living below. But when he falls in love with a beautiful trapeze artist, he is willing to give up his immortality and come back to earth to be with her. Made not long before the fall of the Berlin wall, this stunning tapestry of sounds and images, shot in black and white and color by the legendary Henri Alekan, is movie poetry. And it forever made the name Wim Wenders synonymous with film art." The song is "Acrobat" by As Tall As Lions, and I though the two fit together perfectly. I take no credit for the music or the imagery...only the blending of the two together. This is merely my attempt at tribute art and editing.

Wim Wenders talks about the blues and his film - "The Soul of a Man" (2003).

In "The Soul of A Man," director Wim Wenders looks at the dramatic tension in the blues between the sacred and the profane by exploring the music and lives of three of his favorite blues artists: Skip James, Blind Willie Johnson and JB Lenoir. Part history, part personal pilgrimage, the film tells the story of these lives in music through an extended fictional film sequence (recreations of '20s and '30s events - shot in silent-film, hand-crank style), rare archival footage, present-day documentary scenes and covers of their songs by contemporary musicians such as Shemekia Copeland, Alvin Youngblood Hart, Garland Jeffreys, Chris Thomas King, Cassandra Wilson, Nick Cave, Los Lobos, Eagle Eye Cherry, Vernon Reid, James "Blood" Ulmer, Lou Reed, Bonnie Raitt, Marc Ribot, The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Lucinda Williams and T-Bone Burnett.
