In our previous related posts (Evolving the Start menu, Designing the Start screen, and Reflecting on your comments on the Start screen) we discussed the evolution of the Start menu and the reasoning behind the design. We also discussed how organizational mechanisms and search are powerful tools that make it easier to find and launch apps. As you install more and more apps, these tools become increasingly important. For the past several releases, searching from the Start menu has been established as the quickest way to find and launch apps, particularly for keyboard users. When planning Windows 8, we wanted to make sure the efficiency and dexterity of the Windows 7 Start menu search was carried forward into the new Start screen. Before we dive into the details of the new experience, let's take a quick look at the evolution of search from the Start menu, and how people are using it today.

By creating a separate partition or running it on a Virtual Machine, you'll be able to keep your current OS while using Windows 8. With the launch of the Windows 8 due next Summer it is about time we had a look at the latest preview from Microsoft. You will be glad to know the install is quick as with Windows 7, Windows 8 is an imaged based installation. Integration with Windows Live ID is so critical to the acceptance of Federated IDs and I am all for this type of Identity Vault. Microsoft is prepping to launch another major update to the Xbox 360 user interface, otherwise known as the dashboard, later this year. Today new previews of the dashboard update were posted on several web sites, including word that a beta test for the update will launch in October before the final version will be distributed free to all Xbox 360 owners. When the Xbox 360 launched back in 2005, it had a "blade" design that was dumped in 2008 with the New Xbox Experience update. Venture Beat reports that the design of the new dashboard update resembles the tile-themed UI created for Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 and the upcoming Windows 8 operating system. It also allows Xbox 360 users to go through content much faster which is needed since the amount of content available to Xbox 360 owners has increased dramatically over the years. The new update will also take advantage of the Kinect motion controller camera add-on that launched in November 2010. Players will be able to use the Kinect's voice recognition feature to navigate though the new user interface or you can simply move and wave your hand to interact with the new dashboard. Joystiq reports on the new Bing-based search features that will enable users to look up anything available for the Xbox 360 via the controller or with Kinect via the voice feature. Apples Future Unfolds? - LIVE PRODUCT FOOTAGE READ ON: We have uncovered new footage showing the live product and it is amazing! Apple iPhone 5 or iPad 3 or Super MacBook or the best of all worlds! It seems like the device is an iPhone, smaller iPad and dual display MacBook all in one package. This video was sent to us by an anonymous inside source who claims to have known about this mysterious device for months. Apple promised a revolutionary redesign of the iPhone with the new iPhone 5 and this might be just what they meant! There has been much concern about Apple's future without Steve Jobs, and this could very well have been his opus. It seems to be internal video footage of the rendering of a product in development. Hmmmm....notice the A8 (A is for Apple?) in the project title and the mysterious round (Apple-shaped) logo shape on the back of the screens. It seems like the device is an iPhone, smaller iPad and dual display MacBook all in one package. It has a detachable right screen that can be used as an iPhone/iPad and also seems to run the Mac O/S. It also has a full size keyboard and slide out touch pad. Note that the right screen detaches and is usable without being attached to the rest of the base. This could be the radical redesigned future of Apple before our very eyes! This also may be why Apple has been so secretive about launch dates and new product line features. Upper level winds in the unacceptable range have delayed the GRAIL launch by 24 hours. The twin spacecraft are now scheduled to begin their mission to the moon on Sept. 9, lifting off from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station's Launch Complex 17B aboard a United Launch Alliance Delta II heavy rocket. There are once again two instantaneous (one-second) launch windows. Friday's launch times are 8:33:25 am and 9:12:31 am EDT. The launch period extends through Oct. 19, with liftoff occurring approximately 4 minutes earlier each day.
