Yankee Doodle (Dandy)

Various European countries claim the original of the tune we know as Yankee Doodle, and it was the British who brought the tune to America during the French and Indian Wars. The opening words of the song refer to the fact that when Oliver Cromwell rode horseback into Oxford in 1653 he wore a hat decorated with a single feather fastened by an elaborate knot — an Italian decoration called a "macaroni." The British troops used the song and the term sarcastically, to ridicule the makeshift appearance of the dress of American Colonial troops. When the Revolution began, the Americans adopted the song as a rallying tune, and it was played by fifers and drummers in every camp and battle. At the British surrender at Yorktown on Oct. 19, 1781, the American army band played Yankee Doodle to celebrate the American victory. YANKEE DOODLE LYRICS Yankee Doodle went to town, A-riding on a pony, He stuck a feather in his hat And called it macaroni. (CHORUS) Yankee Doodle, keep it up, Yankee Doodle dandy, Mind the music and the step, And with the girls be handy. Father and I went down to camp, Along with Captain Goodin', And there we see the men and boys As thick as hasty puddin'. (CHORUS) And there was Gen'ral Washington, Upon a slapping stallion, A-giving orders to his men- I guess there was a million. (CHORUS) A long war then was fought and won: The British were defeated, And Yankee Doodle was the march To which their troops retreated. (CHORUS)

Yankee Doodle (Thehos Gendar)

timeriksenmusic.com www.new.facebook.com There's another shorter version on my facebook page. There are apparently various theories about the tune name. I don't know what the deal is, but it's a great tune. I remember well being freaked out in kindergarten when a counselor of some kind took us one by one into the other room and asked us to sing Yankee Doodle and play with blocks. I guess it was a diagnostic thing of some kind. It's a bit of a red herring and you may find it hard to believe, but I've met two bilingual children in different decades who got a note home suggesting they may need to be put on ritalin because they didn't know the English word "spatula."

Yankee Doodle Dandy--Boxcar Willie

Yankee Doodle went to town, Upon a stripy pony, Stuck a feather in his cap, And called it macaroni. Yankee Doodle, keep it up, Yankee Doodle dandy. Mind the music and the step, And with the girls, be handy.Father an' I went down to camp, Along with Captain Gooding. There we saw the men an' boys, As thick as hasty pudding. Yankee Doodle, keep it up, Yankee Doodle dandy. Mind the music and the step, And with the girls, be handy. An' there was Captain Washington, Upon a mighty stallion. Givin' orders to his men, I bet there was a million. Yankee Doodle, keep it up, Yankee Doodle dandy. Mind the music and the step, And with the girls, be handy. There I saw a cannon gun, A load for father's cattle. An' every time they fired it off, You only hear it rattle. Yankee Doodle, keep it up, Yankee Doodle dandy. Mind the music and the step, And with the girls, be handy.Every time they fired it off, It took a keg of powder. Made a noise like Father's gun, Only a nation louder. Yankee Doodle, keep it up, Yankee Doodle dandy. Mind the music and the step, And with the girls, be handy. An' then I see a little keg, It's head all made of leather. They knocked on it with little sticks, They called the folks together. Yankee Doodle, keep it up, Yankee Doodle dandy. Mind the music and the step, And with the girls, be handy. The troopers, too, would gallop up, An' fire right in our faces. Scared me almost half to death, To see them run such races. Yankee Doodle, keep it up, Yankee Doodle dandy. Mind ...

Billy MURRAY ~ "Yankee Doodle Boy" (1905)

from LITTLE JOHNNY JONES (George M. Cohan) / Recorded: 1906 -- YANKEE DOODLE BOY I'm the kid that's all the candy, I'm a Yankee Doodle dandy, I'm glad I am, So's Uncle Sam. I'm a real live Yankee Doodle, Made my name and fame and boodle Just like Mister Doodle did, by riding on a pony. I love to listen to the Dixie strain, I long to see the girl I left behind me; And that ain't a josh, She's a Yankee, by gosh, Oh, say can you see Anything about a Yankee that's phony? I'm a Yankee Doodle dandy, A Yankee Doodle, do or die; A real live nephew of my Uncle Sam's, Born on the Fourth of July. I've got aYankee Doodle sweetheart, She's my Yankee Doodle joy. Yankee Doodle came to London, Just to ride the ponies, I am a Yankee Doodle boy. Father's name was Hezikiah, Mother's name was Ann Maria, Yanks through and through, Red, White and Blue. Father was so Yankee-hearted, When the Spanish war was started He slipped on his uniform and hopped up on a pony. My mother's mother was a Yankee true, My father's father was a Yankee too, And that's going some, For the Yankees, by gum, Oh, say can you see Anything about my pedigree that's phony? I'm a Yankee Doodle dandy, A Yankee Doodle, do or die; A real live nephew of my Uncle Sam's, Born on the Fourth of July. I've got aYankee Doodle sweetheart, She's my Yankee Doodle joy. JUDY GARLAND: 'YANKEE DOODLE BOY' WITH MICKEY ROONEY FROM 'BABES ON BROADWAY'.

Performed by Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney in the Ghost Theater Sequence of the film Babes on Broadway, 1941. Judy turned 19 as she began work on this film, which followed close on the heels of Life Begins for Andy Hardy.Judy had two hit songs from this film. "How About You," performed with Mickey Rooney, was nominated for the Best Song Academy Award for 1942. "FDR Jones," performed solo, was also a hit. She recorded both songs for Decca, and performed them numerous times on radio. This film has some interesting history: It was Vincente Minnelli who scripted the "Ghost Theater" segment in which Mickey and Judy offer impressions of legendary stage favorites. Veteran vaudevillian Elsie Janis was employed to coach Mickey and Judy in the sequence. She was especially appreciative of Judy and later wrote, "She can be anything she wants to be, and it will be very interesting to watch her heart and head battle it out. The former is enormous - the latter is surprisingly small, considering the crowns and laurels it has to hold up. Judy has gone farther, faster than anyone I know - and she has not yet started." This film features the screen debut of Margaret O'Brien. Also, Donna Reed made her screen debut as Jonesy's secretary. Words and music by George M. Cohan.
