That time on the full-length, 20.832 km (12.944 miles), of the Nürburgring-Nordschleife circuit beats out such track performers as the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG and the BMW M3 GTS - putting the ZL1 in solid supercar territory. (Most lap times are measured on the 20.6 km stretch of the track, stopping 200 meters short of the end.) The test, though, was conducted by GM and not independently. Chevrolet has released new information about the Camaro ZL1, ahead of its launch later this year. Designed for maximum performance, the car has a unique front fascia, a ventilated hood and a front splitter. There's also aerodynamic side skirts, extended wheel arches, underbody panels and a rear spoiler. Thanks to these tweaks, the ZL1 produces 65 pounds of downforce - at 150 mph (241 km/h) - compared to the SS' 200 pounds of lift. As a refresher, the ZL1 is powered by a supercharged 6.2-liter V8 engine with 580 hp (432 kW / 588 PS) and 556 lb-ft (754 Nm) of torque. It is paired to a six-speed manual transmission, but a six-speed automatic is optional.

Right on queue the Chevrolet Camaro Z28 has been revealed at the Chicago Auto Show - except the name for the top spec pony-car isn't Z28 - it's ZL1! Although billed as the "fastest Camaro ever offered by Chevrolet" the ZL1 is still undergoing development with performance specs to be released towards the end of 2011 and a market launch targeted for early 2012. Packing an LSA 6.2-liter supercharged engine producing an estimated 550 horsepower (410 kW / 557 PS), the ZL1 uses a high-performance Tremec TR-6060 six-speed manual transmission. Carrying the "MG9" designation, the transmission with its dual-mass flywheel and twin-disc clutch has a higher torque capacity.
