Zarah Leander - Das gibt's nur einmal (1932)

The legendary movie "Der Kongress tanzt" (aka "Le congres s'amuse"/"Congress dances") revolutionized the movie musical... In this movie starring Lilian Harvey and Willy Fritsch, Lilian as Christl sings the song 'Das gibt's nur einmal' while driving in a carriage through Vienna and surroundings on her way to a castle. As she sings, the people alongside the road and working in the fields join her in the chorus of the song. This movie, directed by Eric Charell, became a tremendous succes and was made in a German, French and English version... The song, also known as Christl's song became as legendary as the movie... Charell had to leave Germany as did the composer Werner Richard Heymann and Conrad Veidt in 1933 and the movie was banned between 1937 and 1945. Zarah Leander recorded her Swedish version in 1932... I included a slideshow of the stars of the picture... I hope you will enjoy it! All images/pictures from personal collection. Zarah Leander - Parlami d'amore Mariu(Swedish Version)

The song "Le chaland qui passe" was an enormous hit for French singer Lys Gauty in 1933. It was a translation of the Italian song "Parlami d'amore Mariu" (recorded by Tino Rossi and others). In 1934 Zarah Leander, accompanied by the orchestra of her husband to be, Arne Hülphers, recorded a Swedish version, which in translation means "Love is new every day". Enjoy! Zarah Leander- Die Rose von Nowgorod (Theme "War and Peace")

This is a great song, composed by Nino Rota... It tells the story of a girl from Nowgorod. When war reaches Nowgorod she has to say goodbye to her loved one and she never sees him again... It is a very dramatic composition with a beautiful rhythm... According to Jutta Jacobi, who published an excellent biography of Zarah Leander in 2006, this song was a big succes in the Sowjetunion.... For the last few years there has been a lot of speculation about Zarah Leander being a spy for Russia. According to Russian journalist Arkadij Waksberg she operated under the name Rosemarie. He also cites the succes of "Rose von Nowgorod" and thinks the song may contain a hidden message... However, proof that Zarah Leander and Rosemarie were the same person was never found. Nevertheless historian Anthony Beevor made the same claim in his book on Olga Tschechowa. These rumours were nothing new for they had already started in 1941 when English newspapers reported that Zarah Leander had been shot for spying. She was also under observation by the Swedish SÄPO. Curiously they received a message from the Swedish communist party SKP claiming : "Zarah Leander is a true democrat and not tainted by brown(=nazi) paint" In 1947 the French magazine France-Dimanche called her the greatest female spy (for the Sowjetunion)ever. However this was a time when many outrageous claims were made, not only against our diva (In Belgium it was claimed Marika Rökk had lost a leg in air raid and danced with a wooden ...

Zarah Leander - Wodka für die Königin

Zarah Leander (March 15, 1907 June 23, 1981) was a Swedish actress and singer. Leander began her career in the late 1920s, and by the mid 1930s her success in Europe, particularly in Germany and the Scandinavian countries, led to invitations to work in the United States. Leander was reluctant to relocate her children, and opted to remain in Europe, and from 1936 was contracted to work for the German Universum Film AG (UFA) while continuing to record songs. Leander later noted that while her films were successful, her work as a recording artist was more profitable.
Zarah Leander - Kinostar! (from "Axel an der Himmelstür")

A song from the musical comedy "Axel an der Himmelstür" (Axel at heaven's gates) composed by Ralph Benatzky. It premiered in Vienna in 1936 and made Zarah Leander famous outside Scandinavia. In fact she was somewhat of an overnight sensation as her deep voice was considered very novel in a country used to classical operetta... "Kinostar" became the most famous song the others being "Eine frau von heut'" and "Gebundene Hände". Her succes led to her starring in the Austrian musical picture "Premiere" and eventually her contract with the German UFA studios... Slideshow of Zarah Leander. Zarah Leander - Wann wirst du mich fragen (from "Gabriela")

After almost 7 years, Zarah Leander returned in front of the cameras as the star of the melodrama "Gabriela". This was a big event with enormous press attention, even the very serious "Der Spiegel" ran an article about the extravagant black tiled bathroom in Zarah Leander's hotel suite... Zarah Leander plays Gabriela Donat, whose real name is Helga Lorenzen. She has an affair with a musician (Carl Raddatz) and after a nasty divorce from her very rich and uncaring husband, she decides to kidnap her daughter and start a new life with her musician lover and becomes Gabriela, star of the cabaret with the same name. Her daughter is sent to live with her former nanny in the mountains. Many years later her past catches up with her when her now grown up daughter (Vera Molnar) comes to live with her and starts asking questions... What looked like a perfect Zarah melodrama on paper turned out less than perfect... Rolf Hansen, who showed great skill as the director of her last 3 movies at UFA declined to work on "Gabriela" as did Franz Weihmayr, her cinematographer at UFA. He later commented "Her face just wasn't the same anymore". (due to her heavy drinking, aggravated by her years of inactivity between 1943 and 1947). Badly lit in many scenes, unflattering hairstyles and wardrobe made her appear older than she really was... Zarah Leander herself was not pleased with the result and came to dislike the movie intensely... Despite all this, "Gabriela" was a winner at the box office! It ...

Zarah Leander - Einmal kommt die Liebe (Michael Jary 1960)

This is one of my favourite songs of Zarah Leander's later period... A great composition by Michael Jary, allegedly one of Zarah's great loves, unites drama, a great rhythm and the atmosphere of a smoky nightclub somewhere in South America... Of course the song is about love and Zarah Leander promises that "one day love will come". Some of my favourite pictures of Zarah Leander. Enjoy! All pictures/images from personal collection.

Zarah Leander - Wenn die wilden rosen blüh'n (Swedish)

Franz Grothe composed this lovely song for the Zarah Leander movie "Ave Maria" (1953). This was another melodrama in which Zarah's character, Karin Twerdy, leads a double life. To her daughter, who is at an exclusive school, she is a famed Scandinavian singer. In reality she is known as Marita, the owner of the "Taubenschlag", a cabaret in Hamburg. When her daughter falls in love with the son of a wealthy industrialist, the drama unfolds. When his father (Zarah's frequent partner Hans Stüwe) finds out her real identity and confronts her, she sells the cabaret and fakes her own death so her daughter can be happy... Of course in the end, mother and daughter are reunited and Zarah sings the Ave Maria at the christening of her grandchild... Although Zarah Leander sang "Wenn die wilden Rosen blüh'n" frequently during her concerts, she only recorded this Swedish version in 1953. A German version was recorded later in the 1950's. Zarah Leander- Servus, sagt die schöne Stadt der Lieder(1952)

A rather dramatic post-war recording which in translation means something like "Goodbye, says the beautiful city of songs". The city in the song says goodbye to the singer and she will have to say goodbye to her loved one... You will notice how Zarah Leander's voice is transitioning into a lower register and slowly becoming more masculine... (Compare it to songs from the 1950 movie "Gabriela" or even "Cuba Cabana"). Pictures and images from the later stages of Zarah Leander's career, including of a concert in Belgium in1954 (with Michael Jary) and 1972 (final picture). It's my uploading by request. This Zarah Leander's song was composed by Ralph Benatzky for the musical comedy "Axel an der Himmelstür", Berlin 1936. Soon it became an international hit. (Listen also to the Polish version by Hanka Ordonówna, uploaded by me). Recording: Odeon 1936
(1/2) Zarah Leander sings Pola Negri - "Mazurka" in Swedish

That was a misty and cold Christmas Eve morning in Berlin a year before the fall of the WALL... - I was offered a double LP album of Zarah Leander interpretations that appeared to be quite unusual and very rare. Here is one of them; recorded in Stockholm, 1942. I think that Leander was the first singer who decided to present the "canto" (here, in the middle of recording) of "Mazurka"; not having been sung even by Negri. Adieu Zarah....Fenster meines Lebens...(last recording session 1977)

This is the last video of this Zarah Leander cycle... The song is "Fenster meines Lebens" or "The window on my life" in which she looks back on her illustruous life... It could be seen as her version of "Je ne regrette rien". It was recorded in 1977 in Stockholm and this was her last recording session. The voice is still strong yet it sounds more fragile (as her health was deteriorating). The video opens with a newspaper clipping announcing her death from a Belgian paper and ends with a picture from the very beginning of her career in Scandinavia... Enjoy!
