There should only be one way in or out of a tooth and that is at the base of a tooth. Obviously on the bottom teeth it's down on the bottom and on the top teeth it's up toward the top. That's where the nerves and the blood vessels enter the tooth. If the inside of the tooth goes bad, if the inside of the tooth dies, and it starts to create infection, the infection needs to leave the tooth, it needs to escape. The way that it will do that is out of that opening in the tooth. The infection will then begin to build at the root tip, either the top or the bottom. If the infection gets severe enough, that it creates enough pressure that it needs to exit the body, it will actually tunnel a channel through the bone, out through the gums, so that it can release the pressure into your mouth, it can release the infection and the fluid into the mouth, thereby decreasing the pressure inside the bone. An abscess is simply that, infection finding its way out. You'll know you have one because you'll begin to develop a little pimple or a bump on the side of your gums. Typically it will be squishy, many times it will build and then pop and then decrease and go away, you think it's better, but then it's back in another few weeks. So whether you see it on your child or see it on yourself or feel it on yourself, that is an abscess and that needs to be <b>...</b>
