Hugo de Garis interview - Part 1 (2010-10-09 005)

Interview with Hugo in Melbourne after the Singularity Summit Australia 2010, conducted by Aam A. Ford. Bio: Prof. Dr. Hugo de Garis, 63, has lived in 7 countries. He recently retired from his role of Director of the Artificial Brain Lab (ABL) at Xiamen University, China, where he was building China's first artificial brain. He and his friend Prof. Dr. Ben Goertzel have just finished guest editing a special issue on artificial brains for Neurocomputing journal (December 2010), the first of its kind on the planet. He continues to live in China, where his US savings go 7 times further, given China's much lower cost of living. He spends his afternoons in his favorite (beautiful) park, and his nights in his apartment, intensively studying PhD-level pure math and mathematical physics to be able to write books on topics such as femtometer scale technology ("femtotech"), topological quantum computing (TQC), as well as other technical and sociopolitical themes. He is the author of two books: The Artilect War: Cosmists vs. Terrans : A Bitter Controversy Concerning Whether Humanity Should Build Godlike Massively Intelligent Machines (2005) and Multis and Mono: What the Multicultured Can Teach the Monocultured: Towards the Creation of a Global State (2010). Both these books are concerned with the political consequences of future technologies. Living Long Enough to Live Forever (1/7)

Listen or download the podcast at itsrainmakingtime.com Dr. Terry Grossman and Ray Kurzweil, the authors of Fantastic Voyage and Transcend: Nine Steps to Living Well Forever, present three keys to radical life extension to forestall aging and disease. The first is slowing these processes by using the best knowledge available today for early disease detection and prevention; the other two involve biotechnology and artificial intelligence. Guest Dr. Grossman, the founder and director of the Frontier Medical Group, explains why he and Ray Kurzweil say that our genetic code is outdated, and that our lifestyle (not our genes) is responsible for 80% of our ill health and disease. The two leading causes of death -- heart disease and cancer -- are both totally preventable. Our genome has not been updated; but now that the domain of information technology extends to health and wellness, we can change our genes (and even test them out on biological simulators). According to the law of accelerating returns, our knowledge will be a million times better in 20 years. Join us with Dr. Terry Grossman as we consider the implications of that fact and continue our exploration of the life extension paradigm.

The 2000 Dodge Avenger Returns: Attempt to Start and Drive w/ Underlying Idling Issues

Well consider this as an update video of the 2000 Avenger from my videos last year. We got this back in on trade and come to realize that it might have a bad oxygen issue. I start it up and have trouble getting it to run and drive but am able to in the end. I also tour the car inside and out, showing the car for those who have not seen those older videos on the car. I also rev it up and accelerate to check out the sound and see if I could pin point whether the engine was running rough. Weirdly enough it runs great! Just acts weird sometimes. Any tips? TEDxManhattanBeach - Barry Ptolemy - Transcendent Man

Talk title: Transcendent Man: a documentary about inventor and futurist Ray Kurzweil To understand the future of education - indeed the future of anything - we must understand the role that technology will play in our future. Barry's film Transcendent Man explores the ideas of Ray Kurzweil, who offers us the law of "accelerating returns." Throughout history, each new technology has been built upon previous ones, and each new wave of ideas has been accepted more rapidly than the last. From the Gutenberg printing press to the telephone to the massive early computers, to the PC and on to the iPhone, we're headed for a world of artificial intelligence, in which computers will one day be small enough to fit inside a red blood cell. We must embrace change, or be swept away by it. As publishing, music, health and manufacturing industries have radically changed, so will education. We can pair every student with a computer tablet, an object we ought to call a "gateway to all human knowledge." At age twelve, Barry Ptolemy worked and studied closely alongside director Steven Spielberg on the set of ET, The Extra Terrestrial and became a filmmaker himself. After attending USC film school, Barry's interest in the sciences led him to read Ray Kurzweil's The Singularity is Near, upon which he based his first feature film, Transcendent Man. He also directed the commercial "We Are The World 25 For Haiti" featuring Lionel Richie and Quincy Jones -- the commercial aired during the Vancouver <b>...</b>

Dr Steel Singularity Music Video

I made this music video to accompany Doctor Steel's excellent song 'The Singularity'. Note that most of the clips in the video are demonstrations of real technologies, which can be found on youtube. There are also some animations of technologies that are currently in development (eg fusion and genetic engineering). I think the only part of the video that is pure science fiction at the moment the the part with nanomachines interacting with a cell. The rest is here, now. The singularity is near. This is one of those "What if he is right !!?" talks. Ray Kurzweil makes a graphic and persuasive case that a law of accelerating returns has been operative for eons as well as decades, and the pace is now approaching a velocity that can only be called transformative. Renowned inventor Ray Kurzweil is author of THE AGE OF INTELLIGENT MACHINES; THE AGE OF SPIRITUAL MACHINES; and his brand new book, THE SINGULARITY IS NEAR: WHEN HUMANS TRANSCEND BIOLOGY. James Newton-Thomas interview p1 Robotics, AI, Super Intelligence and Social Responses 2011-05-22

James Newton-Thomas speaks about AI, robotics, super intelligent AI, the Singularity, and friendly AI Quote:"The biggest change in AI that has changed in the last 20 years, is that people have given up trying to define the problems that they wish to solve. They have realized that the problems could often be so complex that we may not know a solution, yet we can still develop systems, or evolved systems that can function in a complex environment." "Neural Nets have, endemic to their operation, a type of evolutionary paradigm. But you can then go to a meta-paradigm, which is to change the structure of the network, and to change the types of neurons and the interconnections between them in the same way that nature will specialize - our brains contain a myriad of sub-brains, each one architecturally adept at solving a certain class of problem." One of the interesting aspects of the interview is how AI has changed, problems can be so complex that it is so hard to define a scalable way to deal with the problem - but we have realized that the problem does not have to be fully described. By developing systems that operate in an evolutionary paradigm, it is possible to solve classes of problems that we don't know how to define.

Singularity Salon Talk - 18th Aug 2011 Tim Josling

Tim Josling speaks on AI.. Previous discussions @ Singularity Salon have been on Chalmers paper, Beleif as Attire (Less Wrong), the H+ Summit 2011, and the Singularity Summit 2010. There is a good post on David Chalmers article "The Singularity: A Philosophical Analysis" at Less Wrong, 201 comments, and counting. See Below for his talk at the Singularity Summit in New York 2009. Abstract for his talk: "The technological "singularity", or IJ Good's "intelligence explosion", is the rapid transition from greater-than-human artificial intelligence to superintelligence. I will set out and analyze the argument for an intelligence explosion, and will consider the forms that such an explosion might take. I will also consider resulting practical and philosophical issues. If a singularity is likely, what are the best strategies for ensuring a good outcome? Will systems in a post-singularity world be conscious? Can we be among them?" -- Update: Singularity SalonHad a generalised meeting entitled 'Singularity Salon' on a few things futurist at Prudence bar in North Melbourne... A good turnout, had a round table discussion for about 5 hours and made plenty of noise. We spoke about a range of subjects including the Japan nuclear disaster, CEV (Coherent Extrapolated Volition), what the metaphor of the Technological Singularity means (can't see past the Event Horizon of a black hole) -- a definition of what the Singularity is and what it isn't: - it isn't the accelerating returns or <b>...</b>

Hugo de Garis interview - part 8 - 2010-10-09 012

part 8 Interview with Hugo in Melbourne after the Singularity Summit Australia 2010, conducted by Adam A. Ford. (3.5 Hours of Hugo Power - Non stop Artilect mayhem!) Bio: Prof. He labels his new lifestyle "ARCing" (After-Retirement Careering), feeling freed <b>...</b>
