Trailer from the new AcuTab Ron Block banjo DVD - A Fresh Look At Bluegrass Banjo. This five minute clip gives a taste of what is included in the full video, which runs to nearly four hours on two DVDs. www.acutab.com There arent many banjos players more widely heard, or who have performed before more people, than Ron Block. Working with Alison Krauss & Union Station since 1991, Rons distinctive banjo sound has become nearly as much a part of the group sound as Alisons voice. Ron has taught in a limited number of worshops, but this is his first instructional DVD of any kind, offering a detailed look at his unique approach to the banjo. This 2 DVD release from AcuTab begins with Ron explaining how he learned, and what resources have been useful to him, plus how he looks at both left and right hand patterns. AcuTabs John Lawless leads him through a discussion of several topics, including tone production, Rons use of bends and chokes, how he arranges solos, and improvisation. Ron goes into great detail about his practice routine, showing examples of exercises and drills he uses to stay in shape. He also describes a number of guitar techniques and concepts which have informed his banjo playing, such as working within boxes, or blocks of frets, and learning to visualize and play scales and patterns both vertically and horizontally. The meat of the DVD is in the songs Ron teaches, which are played in a number of keys and tunings. Youll learn Cluck Old Hen, Tiny Broken Heart ...

Sierra Hull - Secrets Songs & Tunes mandolin DVD

Trailer for AcuTab's Sierra Hull mandolin DVD - Secrets Songs & Tunes. www.acutab.com Sierra Hull started her first year of college in 2009, and is already one of the most celebrated mandolinists in and around bluegrass music. While still in high school she released her debut CD, Secrets, on Rounder Records. On this 2 DVD set Sierra teaches the mandolin solos she plays on Secrets, plus a number of instrumentals she recorded as a pre teen. To get things started, AcuTabs John Lawless leads Sierra through a discussion about how she came to be a stunning virtuoso at such a young age, including her early influences and inspirations. The bulk of the video, however, is all music with 10 complete songs and tunes demonstrated, taken from her critically-acclaimed debut album Secrets, from Rounder Records (CDROUN0601). Sierra teaches these songs carefully and in great detail. She and John discuss each solo before it is demonstrated by an all-star band, and then she breaks it down slowly, piece-by-piece. Even though a few of the solos are fairly difficult, the way she teaches puts them within the reach of most pickers. She goes slowly, breaking each peice into easily-digestible bits, stringing them all together in a format accessible to beginning and intermediate students. Songs taught include: Smashville Thats All I Can Say Hullarious From Now On Secrets Sierras Waltz Ice On The Road Everybodys Somebodys Fool Abscence Makes The Heart Grow Fonder A printed booklet with tab and ...

Jim Van Cleve fiddle DVD

Trailer for AcuTab's Jim Van Cleve fiddle DVD - Become A More Complete Fiddler www.acutab.com Unlock the secrets of improvising in traditional American fiddle styles. 4 hours on 2 DVDs - with printed booklet. In only ten years as a professional musician, Jim Van Cleve has made quite a name for himself in bluegrass and acoustic music. Hes spent time with Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, saw his debut solo CD nominated for a Grammy and toured all over the world with Mountain Heart. Hes become a sought-after Nashville session player and one of the most admired fiddlers in bluegrass. Jim covers many things on these 2 DVDs, but they really break into three sections. After some discussion about early learning experiences, AcuTabs John Lawless leads Jim through a discussion on improvising and building solos on a number of popular bluegrass standards. Two songs, Banks Of The Ohio and Pretty Polly, are each played and demonstrated in 3 different keys Before demonstrating the tunes, Jim breaks down the scale and common positions for each key in turn. He shows where to find the melody, and where adjacent double stops are located, as well as licks and phrases that suit each song. Attention is given to both playing a melody-based solo and what a fiddle can do to assist the band sound in accompaniment. This section on melody and improvising makes up the largest part of the 4 hour presentation. For newer players, it will help open your eyes - and ears - to playing a melody in different keys ...

Wayne Benson mandolin DVD

In more than ten years with bluegrass supergroup IIIrd Tyme Out, Wayne Benson has established himself as one of the most unique and gifted stylists among today's bluegrass mandolinists. In addition, he was featured on seven very popular recordings from Pinecastle Records, the Bluegrass Anual series (Bluegrass 1995-2001). A number of Wayne's tunes from those CDs are taught on this DVD, plus some important and effective techniques that will benefit anyone pursuing a serious study of the mandolin for bluegrass music. A booklet with both tab and standard notation for each song is also included. Wayne starts with a discussion about using downstrokes with the right hand, and how important that is in bluegrass mandolin. To demonstrate this, the first tune is a classic treatment of Bill Monroe's Bluegrass Special, with particular emphasis on the use of repeated downstrokes with the pick. In addition to Bluegrass Special, Wayne teaches 7 of his original mandolin tunes: Tucker, Blountville, Carpenter John, Anxious Molly, Tillery Cove, Ole Rowdy and Chattanooga Breakdown - plus his kickoff for Please Search Your Heart. Each one is played with the guitar backup, and then broken down lick-for-lick before being shown (fast and slow) in a split screen format. The DVD isn't all tunes, however, as Wayne dedicates a good bit of time to explaining how you can practice scales to help learn harmony or twin mandolin. Ron Stewart - The Fiddlers of Flatt & Scruggs

Just as Earl Scruggs set the standard for bluegrass banjo during his tenure with Lester Flatt, the fiddlers who worked with Lester and Earl in The Foggy Mountain Boys did the same during the band's 20 year tenure. Ron Stewart, fiddler with The Boxcars and a go-to session player, has made a life's history of this music, and shares his insight on this DVD. Ron starts with a look at Arthur Smith, the granddaddy of American fiddle, to show how much he influenced everyone that followed in the 1940s. From there he takes six prominent Flatt & Scruggs fiddlers and teaches representative recorded solos from each of them. Solos are examined for Jim Shumate, Benny Simms, Howdy Forrester, Chubby Wise, Benny Martin and Paul Warren. Not all of these men were regular members of the band, but all contributed to their classic recordings. Careful study of these pieces will go a long way towards unlocking the "secrets" of playing authentic bluegrass fiddle. Classic songs like No Mother Or Dad, Earl's Breakdown, Thinking Of You, Foggy Mountain Special, Cabin In Caroline, Shuckin' The Corn, We'll Meet Again Sweetheart, and Let Those Brown Eyes Smile At Me are taught. Each is played with a small band, and then broken down section-by-section before being shown (fast and slow) in a split screen presentation. More details online: tinyurl.com
