Maker Pioneers: Limor Fried, Adafruit Industries

Limor Fried is the founder and engineer behind Adafruit Industries which makes electronics kits that teach soldering, tinkering, and technology exploration. One of their projects, the Tweet-a-Watt, is a wireless modification to a common off-the-shelf home energy monitor, the Kill-a-Watt. The Tweet-a-Watt not only monitors your energy consumption, it sends the information to Twitter so you can track it online, which reveals usage trends over time. Besides selling a Tweet-a-Watt kit, Adafruit has also put the open source plans online for all to freely build and share, creating a network of makers watching their usage and swapping energy-saving tips. makezine.com

Arduino + Adafruit Motor Shield + M35SP-7N Stepper

Scavenged this stepper (M35SP-7N) from a flatbed scanner. I ordered a Adafruit Motor Shield to use with my Arduino (Duemilanove) to help tinker with my steppers... Having very little luck finding information about how to hook up the stepper I figured I would post this video to show how I did it so other people could maybe learn from it. Adafruit Internet of Things Printer

www.adafruit.com Build an "Internet of Things" connected mini printer that will do your bidding! This is a fun weekend project that comes with a beautiful laser cut case. Once assembled, the little printer connects to Ethernet to get Internet data for printing onto 2 1/4" wide receipt paper. The example sketch we've written will connect to Twitter's search API and retrieve and print tweets according to your requests: you can have it print out tweets from a person, a hashtag, mentioning a word, etc! Once you've gotten that working, you can of course easily adapt our sketch to customize the printer.

ADAFRUIT X2 TIME BALL

Why spend time in a crowded and cold times square when you can make your OWN Times Square LED ball? Perfect for new years eve, disco parties, weddings, raves, bar mitzvahs, or just a romantic night in. This DIY LED Disco Ball is made using Adafruit's 12mm LED pixels, an Arduino and two 2.4GHz XBee's (for wireless disco control!). The LED pattern is controlled by the open source graphics language, Processing so it works on Windows, Mac or Linux computers. The ball pattern is made of a dozen laser cut acrylic panels that are ziptied together and the hanging cord is also the power supply cable. We'll have a full tutorial after the new year so stay tuned and get your leisure suit to the cleaners! Adafruit Wave Shield for Arduino Kit

www.adafruit.com Adding quality audio to an electronic project is surprisingly difficult. Here is a shield for Arduinos that solves this problem. It can play up to 22KHz, 12bit uncompressed audio files of any length. It's low cost, available as an easy-to-make kit. It has an onboard DAC, filter and op-amp for high quality output. Audio files are read off of an SD/MMC card, which are available at nearly any store. Volume can be controlled with the onboard thumbwheel potentiometer. This shield is a kit, and comes with all parts you need to build it. Arduino, SD card, tools, speaker and headphones are not included. It is fairly easy to construct and anyone with a successful soldering project under their belt should be able to build it. The shield comes with an Arduino library for easy use; simply drag uncompressed wave files onto the SD card and plug it in. Then use the library to play audio when buttons are pressed, or when a sensor goes off, or when serial data is received, etc. Audio is played asynchronously as an interrupt, so the Arduino can perform tasks while the audio is playing.

Adafruit LPD8806 160-LED Strip Using Original Driver

This is the sample Arduino sketch using the original software driver. I cut this down a lot; after the six-minite mark it goes through the rainbow sequence a few more times. You don't have to watch much to get the idea. The entire sequence takes about 12.5 minutes to run through on a 160-LED strip. After viewing, check out the difference with the native SPI driver I contributed: www.youtube.com
