Merle and Adolf's 50th anniversary
Merle Perez was just 14 years old when she saw 18-year-old Adolf playing softball in the street. Her mother forbade them from dating, but it was too late. "It was love at first sight," Merle said. The couple was married just a few years later, in June of 1962. That day, they promised to take care of each other in sickness or health, and to love each other faithfully. And they've taken their vows very seriously, even though it wasn't easy. Adolf worked hard to earn a living as a dishwasher and then a factory worker. Merle raised their three sons. Now Adolf, 70, is receiving hospice care. On Friday, they renewed their vows in an early anniversary celebration. "I'm not sure he'll still be here in June," Merle said. "I want to do this now, so he knows we're still going strong." Merle planned the ceremony exactly the way she wanted it, unlike the first time around. She wore red and yellow roses, instead of the white flowers her mother had insisted on when she was 16. She chose music that she and Adolf used to listen to, instead of the classical songs from their original wedding. She came down the aisle to "You Are My Sunshine", and played Johnny Cash and The Temptations during the event. "I'm really happy we have today to celebrate," Merle said. "Adolf has been a wonderful husband and father." About 20 people attended the ceremony, including their three sons, neighbors and friends.
