More than 100000 American kids are in foster care where the average stay is more than two years. Foster care children hope to be adopted one day, but as Mark Strassmann reports, some never will have their dream come true.

With a gun in one hand and a sack of bobcat kittens in the other, an Alabama hunter proudly plopped the newborns down on the counter and asked the veterinary assistant to raise them up for him so he could give them to his kids as pets. The vet tech was stunned, but quickly recomposed herself to tell the hunter she would do it for him so as to rescue the babies from such an awful fate. She immediately began scouring the Internet for an expert in rehab and release. When she called Carole Baskin of Big Cat Rescue it was agreed that the kittens would come to Florida, be raised for re-release back to the wild and the paperwork began. It took three days to secure the Florida import permit and time was of the essence. The only kitten formula available to the clinic was one that often causes serious dehydration in bobcat kittens. The second more critical factor was that their eyes would be opening any day and if they were to ever live free it was imperative that they not bond to humans. They never make good pets, but the bonding that takes place during the nursing stage could make them fearless of people and that would get them into trouble as adults. Chloe is a fantastic, calmtwo year old black and brown purebred female Rottweiler who was found in La Puente on August 26th and brought to the Baldwin Park shelter. Weighing sixty-five pounds, she walks well on leash; and has already passed her shelter temperament test. An exceptionally wonderful dog, she takes treats gently and gazes lovingly at her handler. Chloe appears to have been bred repeatedly, and deserves a rest and a loving home; she will be an ideal indoor pet for an individual or family living in a private home, and we think she would be great with kids.
Oso is a Zen two year old black and white neutered male St. Bernard/Labrador Retriever mix who was dumped at the Baldwin Park shelter with his sibling Henry (A435660) on November 15th because his former owner had too many dogs. Weighing seventy-five pounds, he walks okay on leash and seems non-reactive to other dogs. Oso is a very large lapdog -- calm and serene, he would love to hang out with you on the sofa. Oso will be the perfect indoor pet for an individual or family living in a private home.
