US aircraft carriers to deliver 'direct message to Iran'

Europe and the US have expressed their willingness to return to talks with Iran over its controversial nuclear program. But despite that, the EU is seemingly still set to approve an embargo on Iranian oil. France even says the time to avoid military intervention is running out. As for the US, this week it strengthened its presence in the region by sending a second aircraft carrier to the Arabian sea. It's reportedly planning to sail through the Strait of Hormuz which Iran has threatened to block in response to sanctions. The Strait is a strategic waterway which the majority of oil exports from the Gulf to the West pass through. RT discusses the situation around Iran and possible ways out of the crisis with author Michael Winter from Boston. RT on Twitter twitter.com RT on Facebook www.facebook.com

Women in the Navy: Aboard an Aircraft Carrier

From voaspecialenglish.com | http The United States Department of Defense has announced plans to open 14000 more military positions to women. Lieutenant Megan Donnelly is one of the 770 women on the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln. LT. MEGAN DONNELLY: "Managing 15 - 20 people on the bridge at a time, and it's my job to manage all of them for the captain so that he doesn't have to -- he can focus on the big picture." Lieutenant Donnelly studied at the United States Naval Academy. She was trained as a Navy pilot. She has won a Navy award for her leadership. In fact, she was the first woman on her ship to earn the honor. Lieutenant Nicole Rosales is the ship's only female doctor. She likes the Navy. LT. NICOLE ROSALES: "Not only did they pay for my medical school, but they offered me the opportunity to serve on a aircraft carrier and to serve in various different hospitals throughout the United States." Many women serving on the Abraham Lincoln joined the Navy as a way to support their families. Amber Mentzer wants to save money during her four-year term of service and then leave the Navy, but not because she is unhappy. PETTY OFFICER AMBER MENTZER: "You come in with a positive attitude and do what you need to do, you'll be fine. So, I don't have a problem with the workloads or anything. Everybody gets treated pretty equally." Ingry Pimentel plans to stay in the Navy. SEAMAN APPRENTICE INGRY PIMENTEL: "I am gonna stay in the Navy -- makin' a career out of it. I've been ...

US Aircraft Carrier Fleet Evolution - The Greatest Navy "City of Steel" Fleet

An aircraft carrier is a warship designed with a primary mission of deploying and recovering aircraft, acting as a sea-going airbase. Aircraft carriers thus allow a naval force to project air power great distances without having to depend on local bases for staging aircraft operations. They have evolved from wooden vessels used to deploy a balloon into nuclear powered warships that carry dozens of fixed and rotary wing aircraft. Following the war, the scope of carrier operations continued to increase in size and importance. Supercarriers, typically displacing 75000 tonnes or greater, have become the pinnacle of carrier development. Most are powered by nuclear reactors and form the core of a fleet designed to operate far from home. Amphibious assault ships, such as USS Tarawa or HMS Ocean, serve the purpose of carrying and landing Marines and operate a large contingent of helicopters for that purpose. Also known as "commando carriers" or "helicopter carriers", they have a secondary capability to operate VSTOL aircraft. Lacking the firepower of other warships, carriers by themselves are considered vulnerable to attack by other ships, aircraft, submarines or missiles and therefore travel as part of a carrier battle group (CVBG) for their protection. Unlike other types of capital ships in the 20th century, aircraft carrier designs since World War II have been effectively unlimited by any consideration save budgetary, and the ships have increased in size to handle the larger ...

Russian aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov

Admiral Flota Sovetskovo Soyuza Kuznetsov (Russian: Адмирал флота Советского Союза Кузнецов "Fleet Admiral of the Soviet Union Kuznetsov"), originally named Riga, renamed Leonid Brezhnev then Tbilisi) is an aircraft cruiser (heavy aircraft carrying missile cruiser (TAVKR) in Russian classification) serving as the flagship of the Russian Navy. She was originally commissioned in the Soviet Navy, and was intended to be the lead ship of her class, but the only other ship of her class, Varyag, was never commissioned and was sold to the People's Republic of China by Ukraine under the condition she would never be refitted for combat.Kuznetsov was named after the Admiral of the Fleet of the Soviet Union Nikolai Gerasimovich Kuznetsov. China's first aircraft carrier holds maiden sea trial

Varyag was to be an Admiral Kuznetsov class multirole aircraft carrier of the Soviet Union. She was known as Riga when her keel was laid down at Shipyard 444 (now Nikolayev South) in Nikolayev December 6, 1985. Design of the carrier was undertaken by the Nevskoye Planning and Design Bureau. She was launched December 4, 1988, but she was renamed Varyag (Varangian) in late 1990, after the famous Russian cruiser. Construction stopped by 1992, with the ship structurally complete but without electronics. With the dissolution of the Soviet Union, ownership was transferred to Ukraine; the ship was laid up, unmaintained, then stripped. In early 1998, she lacked engines, a rudder, and much of her operating systems, and was put up for auction. It was purchased at auction for US $20 million by Chong Lot Travel Agency, a company widely believed to be a front for Chinese People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) Chong Lot stated that the ship would become a floating entertainment center and casino in the Chinese SAR of Macau. This was proven incorrect as the ship was docked in Dalian and painted PLAN grey. Defense news and intelligence sources indicated that the ship had been refitted and would be put through sea trials in mid-2011. On June 8, 2011 the chief of China's General Staff of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) confirmed that China's first aircraft carrier was under construction. On the morning of August 10 the ship began her first sea trials. General characteristics (Original ...

The NIMITZ Class of Nuclear Powered Aircraft Carriers.

All information supplied in this video was updated and correct, as of 1st November, 2011. The first three Nimitz class carriers were originally designed as replacements for the elderly Midway class. The largest and most powerful warships ever built, they differ from the earlier nuclear-powered USS Enterprise in having two reactors rather than eight, with ordnance magazines between and forward of them. This increases the internal space available to allow some 2 570 tons of aviation weapons and 10.6 million litres (2.8 million US gal) of aircraft fuel to be carried. These totals are sufficient for 16 days of continuous flight operations before stocks have to be replenished. The class is also fitted with the same torpedo protection arrangement as carried by the USS John F. Kennedy, and is laid out with the same general arrangement and electronic fit as the JFK. Four deck-edge aircraft elevators are available: two forward and one aft of the island on the starboard side and one aft on the port side. The hangar is 7.80 m (25 ft 7 in) high, and like those of other US carriers can accommodate, at most, only half of the aircraft embarked at any one time; the remainder is spotted on the flight deck in aircraft parks. The flight deck measures 333 x 77 m (1 093 x 253 ft), the angled section being 237.70 m (780 ft) long. It is fitted with four arrester wires and an arrester net for recovering aircraft. Aircraft Carrier Review by Banbao: Almost as good as LEGO

This is a review video for the Banbao LEGO compatible Aircraft Carrier. In this video I give it a once over, and discuss its quality, durability, and playability, as it compares to LEGO, MegaBloks, and Enlighten brick building sets. So far this set seems to be just about as good as LEGO, and possibly even better than MegaBloks, and certainly better than Enlighten brick sets. It is about 4 feet long, which is super huge! And it comes with 26 minifigs, which is a lot of minifigs! It also comes with 12 jet fighters, which are very simple, and of so so quality. It comes with 1 helicopter which is bascially junk. And it comes with 3 raftes, which are also pretty cool. This is not only a huge set with 3680 pieces, and 26 minifigs, and 12 jets, it is a very cool because of its size, quality, and that it is one of the biggest (if not the biggest) brick built ship available today. Aircraft Carriers: France 1911 - 2011 -?

The Aircraft Carriers of the Marine Nationale under the 3rd / 4th & the present 5th French Republic. To date France stands as the Worlds 5th largest builder of Aircraft Carriers. Although despite commissioning the worlds first Aircraft Carrying Vessel (La Foudre) & having arguably been the first conceive the Aircraft Carrier itself (in Clément Ader's famous 1909 Book "L'Aviation Militaire") the French were slow to build upon this, thus by WWII were outclassed in the Aircraft Carrier field by the RN, USN, & IJN, and consequently were almost overtaken altogether by the Kriegsmarine & Regia Marina. This Video catalogs all French Aircraft Carriers of the last 100 Years, including the planned Joffre Class, the building of which was cut short by France's defeat by Germany in 1940, & never resumed. Ommitted however is the Verdun Class Concept from the late 1950's, & the PA-75 Atomic CAH Concept of the 1970's (as niether completed their Design Phases, & few Images exist). Also ommited are the Ouragan class/ Foudre class & Mistral class, as although all of the latter were/are designed to carry Helicopters they are not definable as Aircraft Carriers, but as Amphibious Assault Ships. The Listing also does not cover the Escort & Fleet Carriers Borrowed by France from the Royal Navy & US Navy after WWII.

LEGO Jets on the BanBao Aircraft Carrier

As promised, in this video we look at the compatibility between the LEGO Creator series jets and the Banbao aircraft carrier. These are not only 100% compatible, but by using the jet fighters made by LEGO, you can replace the small and poorly designed Banbao fighter jets. This is a very good example of how different sets made by different companies, can work very well together. Since LEGO does not make anything that even comes close to an aircraft carrier, the Banbao aircraft carrier is a good fit in your LEGO world. And since the jets that come with the Banbao aircraft carrier and basically small unrealistic looking junk, the LEGO jets are a very good fit with this set. Now once again we need to take a look at that age old question of whether it is ok to use your LEGO side by side with a set made by another company. Also, this is just one more piece of proof that LEGO does make military themed sets, because no matter house you choose to look at it, these LEGO sets are clearly jet fighters and combat helicopters, regardless of what LEGO choses to call them. Video of China first aircraft carrier made out of Soviet warship

A senior Chinese general has for the first time officially confirmed that the country is building an aircraft carrier. According to experts and media reports, the vessel is the half-built Soviet warship Varyag, which China bought and is completing. The ship is not ready yet, Colonel General Chen Bingde, head of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) general staff said in an interview with Hong Kong Commercial Daily. His aide Lieutenant General Qi Jianguo said the ship, when it is ready, will serve as a floating training camp for Navy pilots. It will not be sent on missions to territorial waters of other countries "unlike some other nations do," the general said. While not officially confirmed, defense experts believe that the aircraft carrier is the multi-role Soviet Varyag. The ship was about 60-70 per cent complete when funding stopped in 1992 after the USSR collapsed. Ukraine, which took ownership, auctioned the vessel in the late 1990s, with the Chinese offering the highest bid of $20 million. It was believed that Varyag would be examined by military engineers to copy technology and later sold to a private company to be used as an entertainment facility. This was what happened to two other Soviet aircraft carriers Kiev and Minsk, which China bought too.

The Washington Naval Treaty of 1922 affected aircraft carrier plans. The US and UK were permitted up to 135000 tons of carriers each, while specific exemptions on the upper tonnage of individual ships permitted conversion of capital ship hulls to carriers such as the Lexington-class aircraft carriers. Brazilian aircraft carrier Minas Gerais (A-11) Colossus-class underway in 1984 Wartime emergencies also spurred the creation or conversion of unconventional aircraft carriers. CAM ships, like SS Michael E, were cargo-carrying merchant ships which could launch but not retrieve fighter aircraft from a catapult. These vessels were an emergency measure during World War II as were Merchant aircraft carriers (MACs), such as MV Empire MacAlpine. Submarine aircraft carriers, such as the French Surcouf and the Japanese I-400 class submarine, which was capable of carrying three Aichi M6A Seiran aircraft, were first built in the 1920s but were generally unsuccessful at war. The Tripoli, a US Navy Iwo Jima-class helicopter carrier Modern navies that operate such ships treat aircraft carriers as the capital ship of the fleet, a role previously played by the battleship. The change took place during World War II in response to air power becoming a significant factor in warfare. This change was driven by the superior range, flexibility and effectiveness of carrier-launched aircraft. Following the war, carrier operations continued to increase in size and importance. Supercarriers, displacing 75000 tonnes or greater, have become the pinnacle of carrier development.
