Polish Pronunciation Guide Unit 1
Myplan is to produce one short video for every letter and every sound of the Polish Language. At the end there will be approximately 45 videos, every one of them containing 17 words. So theoretically somebody, who would spend 45 minutes watching all of them, would have at least a swift contact with 765 Polish words (mainly substantives) There is a myth that the Polish Language is one of the most difficult to learn. I don't believe it anymore after meeting and speaking to a lot of students who after learning Polish for six months or so - mastered this language to a remarkable degree. My theory is that the Polish Language appears very difficult at the beginning but after somebody manages to reach a certain point of knowledge - this language becomes unexpectedly easy to speak - because obviously it is a very intuitive and "judge by the ear" language. After reaching a certain point you just know how to say it (how to decline and so) because it seems to sound either good or not. So this is why I think, that anybody who would like to learn Polish should invest quite an ample time to "get used" to it. Those 45 minutes of the Polish alphabet are supposed to be the first introduction to this foreign language. It should help to understand how Polish should be pronounced as well as to learn some first Polish words. It should give you the general idea of how the Polish language sounds like. Be sure to post any of your food picks to facebook.com Here is the recipe: Ingredients: 1 head of cabbage 2 onions 1/2 stick of butter and dashes of olive oil 1 12 oz. bag of noodles, (My mom made her own) (add 1 pound of bacon as an option) salt and pepper to taste Directions: (if your adding bacon then cook your bacon first) 1. In a large fry pan or dutch oven, On low heat, melt butter (or bacon fat). 2. Rinse cabbage, and remove any outer leaves that look damaged. 3. Cut onions and place in the pan of melted butter, turn up heat to medium so they begin to lightly brown. 4. Keep an eye on the onions and reduce heat to lowest setting once golden. 5. On a cutting board place the cabbage core side up. (facing you). 6. With a large sharp knife, slice cabbage about 1/2 inch sections from right to center core. (like slicing cheese). 7. As you slice, scoop up cabbage sections and place in pan also. Turn the cabbage and repeat this process until all that is left is the core. ***NOTE***Dice the core and freeze it for an excellent addition to soups and stews. 8. Once all cabbage is in pan, turn up heat to medium/high and stir frequently until cabbage begins to brown and cook down. 9. add dashes of salt and pepper as you stir 10.Once cabbage and onion are nicely caramelized reduce heat to low and drain off any liquid that has accumulated. 11.Cook noodles according to package directions for aldente and drain well. 12.Add well strained noodles. THE SOVIETS The Soviets looked to destroy Polish self-rule using deportation of hundreds of thousands of Polish citizens and forcing their system of government upon them. They set out to remove a thousand years of Polish cultural influences. Polish was replaced in official usage. Schools spread Soviet indoctrination and religious education was forbidden. Monuments were destroyed, street names changed, bookshops closed, libraries burned and publishers shutdown. Soviet censorship was strictly enforced. Even the ringing of church bells was banned. In 1940 and the first half of 1941, the Soviets deported more than 1500000 Poles, most in four mass deportations. Most of them died of freezing cold, starvation and disease. "Miasteczko Bełz" - Adam Aston
" Mayn Shtetele Belz", famous Jewish song in Yiddish (by poetess Agnieszka Osiecka described as „Main sztetełe Bełz") and in Poland known as "Miasteczko Bełz" is an expression of remembrance of happy childhood spent in that little town. The song became with years more and more legendary and the town itself - semi-mythical. All sources from thirties that I know present names: Burstein, Lith-Frey, Roman as original authors of the song. The added name Roman on Polish records may denote the author of Polish lyrics. Here -- recording made by Adam Aston in 1935, the little falters in his breath may account for true emotion of the interpreter during this great performance. Tango "Rebeka" - full version - Zofia Terné !
Still I would call it Old Polish Tango although it is -- in text and music -- so Jewish. There were many songs composed in Poland in pre-war time meant for audience speaking Polish language, regardless their roots or ancestry. Some of them were picturing people, their habits and customs, according to Jewish tradition; no wonder, there were more than 3 millions Jews in the country on Vistula river. Tango 'Rebeka' is not the only example of the kind, although seems to be the most popular: story of a poor girl, shop attendant in a small town, where one day a handsome and rich gentleman from 'great world', passing by, asks her for 'Ergo' product. She will not forget this visit and the image of 'the prince' -- as a love at first sight -- will haunt her all her life. Before the war, a full text version was recorded only by Zofia Terné (1932). After the war the tango-song became a Polish standard recollecting times "when Jews were among us". Sung by such interpreters as Wanda Warska, Elżbieta Kępińska, Ewa Demarczyk, Sława Przybylska and many, many others.
