Among the Rhine and the hills of the Vosges, near the Alsatian plains, centuries of work created one of the most beautiful landscapes and wineries of France. In the Upper Rhine, the villages of Eguisheim, Riquewihr, Kaysersberg, Hunawihr in Ribeauvillé emerge from a sea of vineyards and are at the same time, the irresistible face of rural and medieval Alsace. Alsace [and Lorraine], unlike the other French Regions, abound in both French and German influences. The region is situated in mid-eastern to north-eastern France. It is bound to the north by Germany and to the east by the Rhine River [with Germany across the Rhine], to the south by Switzerland and the region of Franche-Comté and to the west by the beautiful Vosges mountains and the region of Lorraine. Much of Alsace is found on a fertile alluvial plain, between the Rhine River and the Vosges mountains in the west. The lower area, that rises from the Rhine, is checkered with vineyards. The higher slopes are forested and sprinkled with monasteries and old castles. The region of Alsace consists of the départements of Bas-Rhin and Haut-Rhin. Its principal cities are Colmar, Mulhouse and the regional capital Strasbourg.

Soultravelers3-Alsace, France-Grape Harvest!
This is the first in our Soultravelers3 series about touring great wine regions of the world! Late this past fall of 2008, we arrived in Colmar, France and the many beautiful ancient wine villages along the Alsace route des Vins. Our 7 year old "Mozart" who has been visiting vineyards since she helped put a small Pinot Noir one in with her daddy at 5 months old in California, loved picking these very sweet grapes. We did not know then that she would be spending her childhood running through famous vineyards around the world! The autumn colors were as beautiful as any painting and surprisingly there were very few tourists around. We had just left behind the Romantic Road in Germany and were delighted to discover this area of France ( near both Switzerland and Germany borders) which has a unique heritage making a German/French mix. The stunning wine road winds it's way through 170 kms of vineyards, medieval castles, Vosges forests, Romanesque churches and picturesque villages. We were based at a campground in Colmar which is known for it's historic beauty, gourmet foods and hospitality. What fun to explore their "little Venice" and do some wine tasting, shopping & museum exploring as we walked about. The wines of Alsace are always presented in a tall slender bottle and come from 7 grape varieties: Sylvaner ,Pinot Noir, Pinot Blanc, Riesling, Muscat d'Alsace, Tokay Pinot Gris, and Gewurztraminer. Darius Milhaud - Suite Française (4/5) Alsace-Lorraine
Darius Milhaud (1892-1974) Folk-inspired compositions for band were well established in the works of British composers Holst and Vaughan Williams and Australian-American Percy Grainger at the time this suite came into being. It was the result of a 1944 request to Milhaud from Leeds Music for a school band composition. The suite is in five movements, each titled for the region from which the music came. Each had significance to Milhaud based on his memories of the struggles his country endured during the war. 4. Alsace-Lorraine - A movement reflecting misery and slavery of this, the last province liberated by the Allies. The music includes a begging song, "Lo 'tis the Month of May." The United States Marine Band conducted by Colonel Timothy W. Foley.

Nobody, however, can do it like Jimpster. This single is his first (remixes notwithstanding) output since Sleeper last year, and he doesn't disappoint. A pedigree in jazz, both from his family and from his early, ambient jungle-based productions, has given him not only a talent with the more tonal, soulful side of dance, but also the ability to produce this type of stuff in an interesting, innovative way. The single's A side is definitely its highlight. A steel drum-flavoured pattern bounces around playfully, and shimmering cascades of fizzing build, recede, build, recede, then build and build—and then the whole thing drops into silence, before exploding gently into a cloud of coloured bubbles. It's lovely and funky in equally large measures. A choppy backbeat, similar to the one in "Alsace" but less driving, pushes "Inside the Loop." Jazzy chords oscillate, and a warm, brief bass motif repeats without variation—but these are only a foundation for the other features which come and go within an improvised, ad-hoc structure. Raw, late '80s handclaps, a glass escalator of an arpeggio and a kind of skipping CD voice effect all make an appearance, not to mention the more subtle elements in the pastiche which all drop in and out to give the track its interest. There's nothing as great as that steel drum pattern <b>...</b>
