Since Dumble amps seem to generate a lot of interest, I thought that I might post an audioclip of the tonal possibilities (clean+overdriven, both played with and without preamp boost) available. Equipment used: Dumble ODS(blackface) 100, Marshall 1x12" semi-open cabinet with Eminence Texas Heat 12" speaker. I used my go-to guitar, a Flaxwood Custom: Seymour Duncan calibrated set of minihumbuckers, neck scalloped from E1 to G3 to facilitate bending, bridge pickup 1 sentimeter further from bridge than normal to juice the tone. Close mic is Neumann U-87, ambience stereo-pair is Sennheiser. TC reverb in mixdown. No EQ was used. The drone that you can hear in the background is all my guitar, recorded some time ago as an afterthought, that I find addictive. Overview video displaying 4 popular "cheater" amps from the early to mid 1990's. Models include; (1) Rockford Fosgate Punch 45HD (2) Orion 225 HCCA (3) Precision Power Pro Mos 25 and (4) Phoenix Gold MPS-2240. These amplifiers were often used in single amp, multiple speaker competition systems for the 0-50 watt competition class or multiples were used for higher wattage classes. They were known as "cheater" amps because they would actually output considerably more power in lower ohm loads. For example, the Orion 225HCCA was rated at 25x2 into 4 ohms, but was stable down to 1/2 ohm where it would output 200x2! A 50 watt rated amp putting out over 400 watts? Yes, this is what we call "old school". Much the opposite of many amps sold today as rated at 1500 watts and actually putting out 300 watts (obviously not the case with ALL amps, but some for sure!)
