Andaman Islands - Jarawa tribe

Contact with the Jarawa tribe West coast, Great Andaman Island, 1993 The Jarawa seem to be very excited about the visitors and eagerly swim towards them. A lively communication sets in between the visitor from neighbouring Nicobar island and the Jarawas. The visitor has obviously managed to gain the friendship of the Natives. In the hard jungle life of a hunter-and-gatherer tribe, physical fitness is a matter of survival. Overweight would be as much as a death-sentence. The Jarawas express their curiosity and amusement towards the overweight visitor in grabbing him repeatedly. Accompanied by a large groupe of Jarawas, the outside visitors are welcomed in the settlement of the tribe. Since the making of this film in the year 1993 the relation between the Jarawas and outside visitors has increasingly deteriorated. After around 2004 the Jarawa have returned to their old way of life but maintain a distant but not hostile (as long as they are not pressed) attitude to the Indian population outside their reservation.

ANDAMAN ARMY - INDIA'S MOST PRESTIGIOUS AMPHIBIOUS WARFARE BASE - FULL

India is planning to convert its Andaman and Nicobar tri-services command into an major amphibious warfare hub by setting up full-fledged training facilities and basing a sea-and-land fighting unit to provide teeth to its capability to take the battle into enemy shores. With over 550 islands dotting the strategically located spot in the Bay of Bengal with near 500 of them still uninhabited, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands provide the Indian armed forces the ideal landscape to train its troops on amphibious warfare, which entails landing on the beaches of the enemy territory and taking the gun fight right into the mainland. "There are plans to have an amphibious warfare training facility in the Andaman and Nicobar islands just as the jungle and guerrilla warfare school that the Army has in the North East. "The hundreds of virgin islands here provide the ideal training facility for the troops to gain expertise in the specialist operations," a senior officer from the Andaman and Nicobar Command told PTI here. The tri-services command here, which came up in 2001 after a need for a joint all-service formation was felt, already has surface units to support amphibious operations, which are difficult manoeuvres considering that the troops are exposed to greater risks while entering open landscape in hostile territories. The Command here already has naval surface vessels such as a large Landing Ship Tank (LST) that can carry about 220 fully armed troops along with six trucks, 10 ...

Andaman And Nicobar Islands, Limestone Caves

Andaman and Nicober Islands (India). Late one summer's afternoon in 1992, a cowboy named Sidu was riding through the arid foothills in New Andaman. Suddenly he was startled by a huge black cloud rising from the ground in front of him. He reined his horse to a stop. This cloud was not like any he had seen before, so he decided to see what made it different. As he galloped closer, Sidu realised this funnel shaped cloud was formed by a massive swarm of bats! Millions of them were spiralling out of the sandy hillside. Sidu was puzzled. What were so many bats doing here? Where did they come from? He resolved to find out. With a battered kerosene lamp and a rope ladder, Sidu descended deep into a hole he found in the mountain side. He found tunnels and passageways. Warily he followed one tunnel. Soon it led him to the bats' resting place. The floor was slippery with bats' droppings. Cautiously Sidu crept back. He followed another passage. Before long this tunnel opened up to reveal something amazing. In the flickering light of his lamp, Sidu realised he was in an enormous room. He could see huge stone 'icicles' hanging from the high ceiling. Great pillars rose from the floor. Slender sticks of stone were everywhere, and in a far corner he could just make out a pond with stone 'lily pads' floating on its surface. It looked like Ali Baba's cave - only these treasures were in stone. Over the following years, Sidu found miles of connecting corridors in the cave, and bigger and more ...

Jarawa Tribe of Andaman Islands

Jarawa Tribe in Andaman Islands. Jarawas are one of the adivasi indigenous peoples of the Andaman Islands. Their present numbers are estimated at between 250-350 individuals. They have inhabited the islands for several thousand years. Before the 19th century Jarawa homelands were located in the southeast part of South Andaman Island. In 1997, a group of Jarawas made contact for the first time with the outside world. Now Jarawa are in regular contact with the outside world, which is not the best thing for them... The Jarawas are said to be the darkest people (sociologically and scientifically speaking and not from a derogatory point of view) in the world. Jarawas in Andaman Islands. 1.Scuba Diving Andaman Sea, Similan Islands, Phuket Thailand ดำน้ำสิมิลัน

Just 60 miles northwest of Phuket, lie the Similan Islands. The word 'Similan' comes from the Malaysian word 'sembilan' (which means the number 'nine'). The Similan Island National Park is without doubt the most prestigious marine park in Thailand and easily accessible via Thailand liveaboards. Running from south to north and numbered accordingly, lie these truly unspoilt granite islands. With crystal clear seas and stunning coral formations, no wonder Jacques Cousteau believed it to be, one of the best diving destinations in the world. The islands, best experienced on Thailand liveaboards, are densely covered with tropical vegetation, offering short and easy adventure trekking through the rainforest jungles. Due to the raging south west monsoon, the exposed south, west and north sides of each island, offer stunning underwater scenery. What you see above is what you get below. Rising from depths of more than 50 metres, the sea consists of large granite boulders that lay strewn together, overgrown with hard and soft corals. This provides some magnificent Similan Islands diving, with many interesting swim throughs, canyons, archways and caves. Protected from the raging monsoons on the east side of each island, you will find untouched, powdery white sandy beaches. Underwater, you will be able to witness, sand slopes with beautiful fringing reefs. Teeming with a large diversity of marine life, these reefs are perfect for drift diving.
