Beethoven - Piano Sonata No. 23 in F Minor "Appassionata" - Mov. 3/3

LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN (1770-1827) Sonata for piano No. 23 in F minor "Appassionata" Op. 57 3. Allegro ma non troppo Performed by Melvyn Tan, fortepiano *Ludwig van Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 23 in F minor, opus 57, colloquially known as the Appassionata, is considered one of the three great piano sonatas of his middle period (the others being the Waldstein sonata, opus 53 and Les Adieux, Opus 81a). It was composed during 1803, 1804, 1805, and perhaps 1806, and is dedicated to Count Franz von Brunswick. The first edition was published in February 1807 in Vienna. Like the early Sonata No. 8, "Pathétique", the Appassionata was not named by the composer, but was so labeled in 1838 by the publisher of a four-hand arrangement of the work. The Appassionata was considered by Beethoven to be his stormiest piano sonata until the Hammerklavier, being described as a "brilliantly executed display of emotion and music". 1803 was the year Beethoven came to grips with his complete deafness, and the Appassionata clearly reflects the emotional turmoil he felt during its composition. **Maxim Gorky recorded that Vladimir Lenin once said, I know the Appassionata inside out and yet I am willing to listen to it every day. It is wonderful, ethereal music. On hearing it I proudly, maybe somewhat naively, think: See! people are able to produce such marvels! He then winked, laughed and added sadly: Im often unable to listen to music, it gets on my nerves, I would like to stroke my fellow beings ...

Beethoven 'Appassionata', 1st mvt: Dame Myra Hess (1945)

Dame Myra Hess in a lunchtime concert at the National Gallery plays the opening movement of Beethoven's Piano Sonata in F minor, Op 57. During the war years, and the blitz, Dame Myra Hess organized over a thousand concerts at the National Gallery. The Gallery had removed all their paintings, keeping just one on display each month as thousands of folks (many not regular concert goers) came to hear, be inspired, and maybe gain a little hope by these wartime concerts. Andrew Dickson wrote in his blog at the "Guardian": "the monumental Appassionata - always associated in my mind with a wartime film of Myra Hess at the National Gallery, playing those crashing F minor chords at with a stubborn intensity that takes on all the death and mayhem around."

Tzvi Erez plays Beethoven's Sonata 23 "Appassionata" Opus 57 - Allegro assai (1/3)

iTunes link itunes.apple.com Part of "Masterpieces" CD. Beethoven Sonata 23 "Appassionata" Part 1/3 - Allegro assai by Tzvi Erez - performed on a 1912 Bosendorfer piano. Compose 1804/05. Urtext Version. This emotional sonata, was composed around the same time as Beethoven's 5th Symphony, and features the same musical "4 note" motif all over this movement. I have always regarded this Sonata as one of Beethoven's best, filled with both serenity and extreme anger and turmoil. At this time in his life, the great composer and maestro was coming to terms with his deafness. A suitable recording for the new collection: Beethoven - From the Depths of Hell Please comment and rate.

Rzewski plays Beethoven - Appassionata Sonata Audio + Sheet music

Contemporary composer and virtuoso pianist Frederic Rzewski performs Ludwig van Beethoven's well-known Appassionata Sonata, live in 2001. 1st mvt: 0:05 Cadenza: 12:42 2nd mvt: 17:28 Cadenza: 23:11 (In this movement, not all the marked candezas are actual improvisations but rather editions by Rzewski. I have another recording of him playing this piece, and he plays those repetitions exactly the same way. The only real cadenza is the last one.) 3rd mvt: 25:40 1st cadenza: 29:55 2nd cadenza: 36:13 Some explanation is, I believe, needed to this performance. Excerpts from an article on Rzewski: "No question, Mr. Rzewski likes to keep listeners guessing. When he plays other people's music, he can raise hackles by improvising cadenzas in the middle of such untouchable masterworks as Beethoven's "Hammerklavier" and "Appassionata" Sonatas. "I do it because I think it's authentic," he said. "It's what I think Beethoven would have done. A few years ago, after a concert at Bard College, a musicologist came up to me and told me very sternly that you could do that at parties but not at a concert. Usually people don't hire you at all if they think you're going to go in for such shenanigans. "And maybe they're right. My Japanese friend Yuji Takahashi, the pianist and composer, says: 'It's redundant. All the irrational stuff is already there, in Beethoven's writing.' I do whatever I think is right at the moment. One thing is for sure: You shouldn't prepare it. Improvisations have to pop ...

Tzvi Erez plays Beethoven's Sonata 23 "Appassionata" Opus 57 - Allegro ma non troppo (3/3)

iTunes link itunes.apple.com Part of "Masterpieces" CD. This is a recording of the third movement of Beethovens Sonata 23 Opus 57 in F minor Appassionata, Allegro ma non troppo, played by Tzvi Erez on a 1912 Bosendorfer. Undoubtedly one of Beethovens most powerful and greatest Piano Sonatas, the Appassionata was ahead of its time in its structure and power. I find that many pianists ignore many of the dynamic markings so carefully indicated by the Maestro. In many performances, I see and hear sections marked pianissimo being played loudly, and there is a tendency to overstate the underlying quite turmoil. Another major point is the tempo of this precious movement. Allegro ma non troppo is a slightly SLOWER tempo than Allegro, yet again, many pianists take this movement to extreme speeds, where more wrong notes an bad phrasing are played than good ones. I hope you enjoy my performance of this movement. I choose to perform it so that the music, immortalized by Beethoven, speaks to, and hopefully touches your hearts. Please rate and comment.
