This bionic technology-bearer, which is inspired by the herring gull, can start, fly and land autonomously -- with no additional drive mechanism. Its wings not only beat up and down, but also twist at specific angles. This is made possible by an active articulated torsional drive unit, which in combination with a complex control system attains an unprecedented level of efficiency in flight operation. Festo has thus succeeded for the first time in creating an energy-efficient technical adaptation of this model from nature.

Robotic smart bird flies like real gull

A German company has developed a gull which can fly like real gulls. Smart Bird, which uses a compact 135 brushless motor, can start, fly and land autonomously. An articulated torsion drive unit allows the bird to beat its wings up and down as well twist at specific angles. Company Fesco built robotic gull from carbon fiber and polyurethane foam, the ultra light Smart Bird weighs 485 grams, operates at 23 watts and can be controlled from the ground using a radio controller. The German company said that the bird's functional integration of coupled drive units could potentially be transferred to the development and optimization of a range of hybrid drive technology - from generators that derive energy from water to new actuators in process automation. The minimal use of materials and the bird's lightweight construction also pave the way for efficiency in resource and energy consumption, says Festo.

Flying Robot Animatronic Birds & Dragonfly : Mechanical morphing wings

A compilation of Robot or animatronic birds I have designed and built for various projects. The first seen, A flying Rainbow Lorikeet was built in 1988 and uses wing sweep and twist and head movements for all flight control like a Nano Hummingbird. It has no flaps, ailerons or elevators in the usual sense , but mimics real bird flight control by moving its wings in the same fashion as a real bird. The other projects are from various TV adverts and movies I worked on where I employed my detailed knowledge of bird anatomy and flight. Unfortunately I was not present when some of the Pelican and Duck characters were programmed and performed by others. I would have preferred to have done the wing programming myself as I had spent many months studying all aspects of bird flight in detail. Even though the characters were perfectly capable of absolute realism, they were programmed with exaggerated comical movements rather than accurate flight actions. Sometimes directors prefer exaggerated action over realism. The Peter Pan parrot was a tiny animatronic character with self contained flapping and folding wings, top and bottom beak, full eye action, waggling tongue and mechanised peg leg. Again the parrot was required to be performed with comic movements rather than realistic movements. His head foot and body were controlled by rods which were digitally removed by ILM.

The minimal use of materials and the extremely lightweight construction pave the way for efficiency in resource and energy consumption. Festo already today puts its expertise in the field of fluid dynamics to use in the development of the latest generations of cylinders and valves. By analysing SmartBird's flow characteristics during the course of its development, Festo has acquired additional knowledge for the optimisation of its product solutions and has learned to design even more efficiently. The Redesigned Land Cruiser 2008 : DigInfo

DigInfo: movie.diginfo.tv - Related Links www.toyota-body.co.jp toyota.jp Released worldwide from October 2007, the latest Toyota Land Cruiser was unveiled in Tokyo on September 18. The full size, completely redesigned Land Cruiser, features a completely new platform and suspension system. The redesigned exterior combines the traditional land cruiser identity with merged front and rear fenders, integrated rear bumper with combination taillights and a full frame structure with greater torsional and flexural rigidity. The redesigned interior is 175mm longer, and features a horizontal instrument panel with a redesigned center cluster and all leather heated front and second row seats. The 4.7 liter V8 engine has increased output with a higher compression ratio and higher maximum engine speed, this is matched with a 5 Super ECT transmission and leads to improved fuel efficiency of 6.6 kilometers per liter and a reduction in CO2 emissions. The Crawl Control system, combined with Toyota's Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System allows for greater stability in off road driving conditions. KDSS allows for greater suspension articulation, by using hydraulics to independently control the front and rear stabilizers depending on the conditions. This system also decreases body roll for improved on road handling. Toyota aims to ship 100000 units worldwide by 2008.

Ferrari F355 F1 Spider--D&M Motorsports Video Review 2012 Chris Moran

SEE OVER 100 IN-DEPTH AUTO REVIEWS @ www.SUPERCARNETWORK.com. An in-depth presentation of a gorgeous 1999 Ferrari F355 Spider with Chris Moran. Presented by D&M Motorsports. It's tough enough to build a perfect sports car. The essentials include a frame that's both lightweight and superrigid, a racetrack-ready suspension, brakes more tenacious than those on a mile of Santa Fe freight train, and an engine that combines high-drama power output, environment-friendly exhaust, and the basic reliability of a blacksmith's anvil. Oh yeah, the perfect sports car also needs drop-dead looks, air conditioning that actually works, and a high-rpm wail sensuous enough to have you at 8000 rpm while backing out of the garage. No mean feat, this perfect sports car, but Ferrari has created just such a machine: the F355 Berlinetta. Our July '95 issue's test raved about this Italian mid-engined coupe's blistering performance, fawned over its creature comforts, and openly gushed about its Pininfarina-sculpted beauty. Whether trolling for action along Sunset Boulevard or blowing the snot out of some race car on the track, the F355 Berlinetta never makes excuses and never lets you down. So, herein lies the embodiment of the best Ferraris of all time: The F355 can not only trace its primordial DNA to the blood-engorged Testa Rossa race champion and masterpiece 275 GTB Lusso, but it operates with such a delicate touch that Madame Curie could set fast time down Coldwater Canyon on a moonless night ...

Opel Astra 1.7 CDTI Elegance Full Review,Start Up, Engine, and In Depth Tour

The old GM might have been a bad car company, but it was launching some seriously good cars, especially (but not limited to) the ones developed at Opel in Germany. The Opel Insignia is current European Car of the Year, which bodes well for the related Buick LaCrosse and Regal. Now Opel has done it again with the new Astra. Honestly it's one of the best compact hatchbacks made anywhere in the world, a car fit to take on the VW Golf for refinement and driving ability. But for Americans, the meaning of all this is uncertain. The Astra was originally supposed to provide the basis for a Saturn and a Saab, but GM has jettisoned those brands, as well as Opel itself. Of course, New GM might well have access to this platform. At this writing, an MOU has been signed with Russia's Sberbank and Magna that will give New GM a 35-percent stake in Opel. How it might use it is uncertain, and even the final signing of the Magna deal is not a foregone conclusion. The 174-inch Astra has a three-inch-longer wheelbase than its predecessor, the car sold unsuccessfully here as the Saturn Astra. It also has a much more sweeping look. Distinctive elements include arrowhead jewelry in the light clusters, a sculpted blade in the bodyside, and strong shoulders. The photo car wears 19-inch wheels, though our tester has more reasonable 225/50 17 tires. Click to view GalleryThe interior derives much of its upscale feel and design from the Insignia. Smartbird Animation

SmartBird is an amazing feat in German engineering that fuses the highest levels of ingenuity, design, and technology to yield what no other venture has ever yielded before; the world's very first, completely autonomous mechanical bird. Festo, a leading word-wide supplier of automation technology based out of Berlin, Germany, has successfully developed an ultra-light and ultra strong model of a seagull that not only looks lifelike but more importantly has the aerodynamic qualities it needs to allow it to fly.
