This is one of the most beautiful accomplishments in PS22 Chorus history -- from the genuine heartfelt performance of the kids, to the precision of harmonies, to Brielle's beautiful soloing. Today I am an extremely proud music teacher..... The song is "I'll Stand By You," originally by The Pretenders, and written by Chrissy Hynde, Tom Kelly & Billy Steinberg. I'm not sure it's ever been more potent than it is as presented here. The entire fifth grade will be singing this at PS22's graduation which comes in only a couple of weeks. I predict not a dry eye.... Born in Belgium in 1980, De Backer moved to Australia with his family when he was 2 years old. His parents chose to use the English variation of his name, Walter, when enrolling him in school. From early on, De Backer displayed a passion for music, learning various instruments, piano and drums most notably.
