On that Tuesday morning, 19 terrorists from the Islamist militant group al-Qaeda hijacked four passenger jets. The hijackers intentionally crashed two planes, American Airlines Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175 into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City; both towers collapsed within two hours. Robert Lehrman: Secrets of the Art World - Smithsonian American Art Museum

Collectors' Roundtable with Robert Lehrman This annual series provides insight and invaluable advice on collecting art from museum directors, curators, collectors, art dealers, and consultants. This evening, collector Robert Lehrman (Washington, DC) presents "Secrets of the Art World." Robert Lehrman, since 1979, has been collecting works by contemporary American and European artists, including William Christenberry, Damien Hirst, Agnes Martin, Gerhard Richter, and Andy Warhol. He also has one of the most comprehensive private collections of works by Joseph Cornell. Lehrman is founder and president of the not-for-profit Voyager Foundation and has lectured on contemporary art appreciation at museums, universities, and art schools across America. He believes that in addition to being personally rewarding, collecting art and supporting art organizations and their related activities is an important civic responsibility. He is on the Board of Trustees of the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, where he served as chairman from 1998 to 2003.

William Kentridge on his place in the art world

Throughout his career, William Kentridge has been involved in politics, fine art, theater, film, and television—moving beyond the specific political issues of his native South Africa to address the human condition, exposing the nature of memory, emotion, and social conflict. He uses a distinctive technique: charcoal drawings that are photographed, erased, and redrawn many times to create evocative video animations that both tell stories and capture the act of drawing. These expressive images speak in many contexts, from Kentridges production of Mozarts The Magic Flute, presented at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, to three works first shown at the 2005 Venice Biennale that combine performance, moving image, animation, and music, now acquired by the Museum of Modern Art. A major exhibition of his work opens at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in March 2009. For more information on MFA lectures, please visit www.mfa.org

Loren Munk: Location, Location, Location/Mapping the New York Art World

Lesley Heller Workspace, 54 Orchard Street, New York, NY 10002, Sept. 7-Oct. 16, 2011. Loren Munk's oil paintings are maps of time periods, artists' studios, galleries, alternative spaces during intensive periods of art historical importance in New York City over the past 60+ years. Munk also writes art criticism for The Brooklyn Rail and has his own "Rough Cuts" in which he rides around to art shows in galleries and museums and documents them through film. Also in attendance one of the artists in his map paintings, Ron Gorchov. To me, the paintings allude to the Southern folk artist, Howard Finster (1916-2001) although Munk has taken his painting into a more contemporary abstract direction with the colorful street maps underlying the blocks of information.

Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960-1988) (excerpt)

Excerpt of ART/new york program no. 30A: JEAN-MICHEL BASQUIAT: An Interview, available for purchase at www.artnewyork.org/store. On this program we see a rare interview with the mercurial painter, Jean-Michel Basquiat, conducted in 1981 in his studio on Crosby Street, in SOHO. Basquiat, an internationally renowned artist as well as the enfant terrible of the 1980's art scene, died tragically in 1988 at the age of 28. Both during his brief life and since his untimely death, stories and legends abound which chronicle his meteoric rise to art world stardom. In 1996 Basquiat's life was fictionalized in the film entitled BASQUIAT, directed by fellow artist Julian Schnabel. On this ART/new york program, the 21 year old Basquiat is interviewed by art historian - curator Marc H. Miller, PhD. Already a well known art world figure, Basquiat's fondness for high jinks as well as his exuberant spirit are captured as he describes his working process and comments upon his art world persona. 34 mins.
