Athlete - Chances
Athlete is an Ivor Novello Award winning English indie rock band formed in Deptford, London, comprising Joel Pott (lead vocals and guitar), Carey Willetts (bass and backing vocals), Stephen Roberts (drums and backing vocals) and Tim Wanstall (keyboards and backing vocals). Recently, the quartet have recruited Jonny Pilcher of Weevil as a live guitarist. Friends since the age of fourteen, Athlete took their wide ranging influences such as Grandaddy and The Flaming Lips and started jamming and practicing in the basement of The Bear, a pub which was converted into a church and sandwich bar, on Deptford High Street in 1999. They began recording there, before sending demos out.

Super Mario Athlete's Rag Air Platform sight-read; Tom Brier
If you've seen my other videos of Tom sight-reading videogame ragtime sheet music that I've put in front of him, this video should come as no surprise to you. I had not yet finished correcting the awful score that is available online for this tune (I did put it into the correct time signature, but it still has some really funky chords and other problems), nevertheless I put a copy of it as it stands in front of my amazingly talented friend Tom Brier this weekend. This was the result. Tom is a highly regarded pianist and sight-reader in the ragtime community. I have other videos of him you can find (and more to come) which will give you an idea why. There are so many amateur pianists out there playing these rags from video games, but I thought it would be nice to see what a pianist who specializes in ragtime music would make of them. This tune is by Koji Kondo (近藤浩治) and is one of the most famous tunes of all music from Nintendo video games. I still haven't cleaned up the score completely. 'Iran ninjas athletes, not assassins'
Iranian female ninjas have rejected recent Western media report describing them as assassins, saying that they are training as regular athletes and martial artists, Press TV reports. Last month, Press TV aired a report on about Iranian women training in Ninjutsu grabbed media attention worldwide. Reuters News Agency put a different spin on the story in a separate report published on February 16. The report claimed that the athletes are undercover assassins in the service of the Islamic Republic.

The Athlete (Davey Frankel and Rasselas Lakew, 2009): Ethiopia/Germany/USA "The Athlete" is an uplifting story about an Ethiopian runner named Abebe Bikila who became the first black African to win a marathon gold medal at the Rome Olympics (barefoot nonetheless). Years later, he then repeated his victory and record at the Tokyo Games making him the first runner ever to accomplish this consecutively. Through all his accomplishments he managed to be his countries hero second to Ethiopia's emperor Haile Selsassie who he admired tremendously. Abebe was a hero to his village; his own success brought his people and his land tremendous attention. People respected Abebe for who he was and what he did. In the film we see him as a family man and a serious man at that. On his way home he gets into a car accident that leaves him on the side of the rode trapped under his car for 10 hours. He is flown to England where he is brought back to consciousness but faces bad news; he is paralyzed from the waist down. The true essence of the movie isn't about how an Olympian athlete deals with being paralyzed but about a man's struggle with the need to compete and win. With real archival footage dispersed throughout the film, you truly get a feel for this brave mans story. Many elements of the film are great; Abebe's story itself, the fact that he's such a family man, his best friend Onni (Dag Malmberg), and his home land of Ethiopia. BD athlete Adam Ondra went on something of a tear the first four months of 2011—in case you were living in a dumpster and didn't hear the news. 8c+ onsights, 9b redpoints—sometimes both in the same day. (Check out the videos here and here.) After his northern Spain rampage, he headed down to southern Spain with his father to have a go at Chilam Balam, a wildly overhanging, 80-plus meter long, traversing route that was famously graded 9b+ by its first ascentionist, Bernabe Fernandez. It had never seen a repeat—until Adam showed up and dispatched the stunning line in a handful of tries (check out the rowdy runouts when he starts skipping clips!). Next up was an undone project to the right: a tufa and micro-crimp line that would prove to be more demanding than its well-known neighbor. Adam eventually redpointed the line, naming it La Planta de Shiva and grading it 9b. Two weeks... two of the hardest sport climbs in the world dispatched. When Adam told us he was heading down to try Chilam Balam and La Planta de Shiva we dispatched Bernardo Gimenez to document the action, sure that Adam would—again—pull off a stunning performance. Below is Bernardo amazing video that captures both 9b ascents. Epic, epic EPIC! If this doesn't get you psyched, go back to your dumpster.
