They are distinct from the world, because of their special conduct and their exemplary ethical life.They are known as the "anchorites" (from anachoresis: departure, flight); the hermits (from eremos: desert); and the monastics (from monos: alone, for a monastic "lives in the presence of God alone").
As it reached the end of its first millennium in 1963, the monastic republic of Mount Athos seemed to have completed its life cycle and to be breathing its last. It had been born, grown to maturity, produced a rich harvest of fruit, and grown old. Its strength was shockingly reduced. The numbers of the monks had fallen considerably and their average age was now over fifty-five. The elders were dying naturally, without seeing younger men come to take their place in the monasteries and hermitages. Huge monastic complexes that had once pulsated with life now stood derelict and deserted. Everything betokened decline and decay. Certainly, this was not the first decline the monastic republic had experienced in its long history. Yet almost everyone believed it would be the last. Many of the monks, even, had come to believe that they would have no successors. And so, on the fringes of the millennial celebrations, it was being said that the festivities were in fact the 'funeral service' or even the 'requiem' for Athonite monasticism.

I visited the Holy mount athos a couple of years ago during the orthodox Pasxa. From Ouranoupolis i travelled to Agia Anna for the Easter (the night between Saturday and Sunday). The next day i travelled to Karyes and on Monday (the day after Easter) i followed the ikon of "Axion Esti" on the 4-5 hours litany från protaton and back there. On Tuesday i followed the litany of "Fovera Prostasia" from the Iviron monastery. Kali Anastasi s' olo ton kosmo!

It seems that from the first, human culture had marked out this spot to be one of wonder, amazement, and religious dedication. The peninsula known today as Athos did not always bear this name. Ancients called the whole protrusion Akte, and so it was known for centuries. The name Athos (a word of prehellenic origin) is the that of a Thracian giant whose legend is intimately interwoven with that of the history of the peninsula itself. One account records that the giant Athos hurled the entire rocky mass (now the peak of Mount Athos) at Poseidon in a gigantomachic clash of god and man. In another account, it was Poseidon who came out the victor, burying the defeated Athos under the peninsula's peak. Another legend brings Athos' early history into a more human realm. This account, recorded by Strabo and Plutarch, tells of the lofty ambitions of Deinocrates, chief architect to the Macedonian king Alexander the Great, who purportedly wished to transform the whole of Mt Athos into an immense figure of the Macedonian king - rather along the lines of a classical Greek 'Mount Rushmore.' The intended sculpture was to be grandiose indeed: one of the king's hands would hold a city filled with his subjects, while the other offered a continual libation to the gods by pouring out a great stream of water into the adjoining Aegean.
