ChaserCon 2010 - Unreal Weather Aurora Tornado

This is the video our team submitted for showing at ChaserCon 2010. It's a compilation of the 3 different cameras that were recording the Aurora, NE (2009) tornado. The audio has been modified to make it more friendly for a public showing. It's not new footage, but it's a fresh look at it.

An incredible video of the Aurora EF-2 tornado. It touched down near Phillips and stayed on the ground for over 15 minutes. It lifted two miles west of Aurora. Unfortunately, the tornado took out a house and part of the Iams dog food plant. The family that lived in the house was very fortunate. The wife looked outside to see two storm chase vehicles parked in their driveway, and she made the decision to get herself, her husband and four children into the basement mere seconds before house was taken. This was shot from my back yard. It started over Buckley AFB about 4 miles away and headed toward my position. When it turned and went east it was about 1/2 mile away. The hail is larger then a golf ball. We all were very lucky on Powers Circle. Shot with Sony TRV-30 Digital video camera.

I intercepted the magnificent tornadic supercell that produced the amazing Aurora, NE tornado. We intercepted nearly half dozen tornadoes from this supercell as it tracked north of I-80 from north of Kearney to east of Aurora.

Large Tornado- Alda/Aurora, NE June 17th, 2009

This day literally came at the end of our trip to Tornado Alley. And what a way to end it! Dave Lewison, Mark Robinson and I were chasing near Beatrice, NE earlier this day, and we were on an amazing supercell thunderstorm that did in fact produce a tornado. We briefly witnessed this tornado but as the storm began to weaken, our attention soon turned to the storms that were firing west of us...I mean WAY west of us near Grand Island. A decision had to be made, do we pursue the storms in our area, in the hopes that another one would take shape, or perhaps the storm that we were on would re-intensify and possibly produce a tornado again....or do we haul it to the Grand Island storm. Thankfully we made the decision to head to Grand Island! We skirted the Kansas/Nebraska state line until we hit our north road option which would take us right to I-80 in the town of York, NE. We arrived in York around 6 or 630pm if memory serves me right and immediately got on the 80 heading west towards Grand Island. The storm was right in front of us and it looked amazing! The anvil was spreading out right on top of us, and the updraft base was visible in the distance. At this point we were still a good 50 miles from the storm, and reports began to come in that it had already produced a tornado. We were just hoping that it would still have some left for us by the time we got there. Thankfully the speed limit on I-80 was 75mph, we made good time and arrived near the town of Alda, NE right as ...

Tornado Touchdown in Aurora, NE June 17, 2009

This was taken on the west side of Aurora, NE in the evening of June 17, 2009. I'm amazed at these wonders and love the excitement of seeking out a new adventure. This was definitely an adventure. I was completely safe during the taping of this as I had an escape route planned if it started moving towards me. It sat in the same spot for 18 minutes. I'm not a professional storm chaser, nor do I claim to know everything about tornados, so when listening to the audio you are hearing the adrenaline speak.

Aurora Nebraska Tornado, June 17, 2009

To Begin, the quality of this video is not all that great, my appologies. Let's just say my first up close encounter got my adrenaline pumping. My roomate and I took off late in the evening, around 7:00 after we both got off work to get some sweet storm pictures. We really didn't think the evening would end like this. The tornado drops down north of Giltner, Nebraska. It was on the ground for 18 minutes, and travelled very slowly, only going 5 miles. As the tornado reached it's most powerful stage and approached Aurora, Nebraksa, they issued a tornado emergency for Aurora. I have never hear a tornado emergency issued live, and it was a humbling experience. Thank God it picked up before it hit town, and my prayers go out to the families it did effect.

MONSTER TORNADO UP CLOSE Aurora, Nebraska, June 17, 2009

For licensing contact hankschyma@yahoo.com. This amazing EF2 tornado was the 3rd intercepted by Hank Schyma just east of Grand Island Nebraska (approaching Aurora) on June 17th 2009. At one point it was a 1/4 mile wide and destroyed a families home and barn. 6 people escaped into the basement seconds before their house was ripped apart. BTW, RFD= Rear Flank Downdraft... Big hail, Strong wrap-around winds, torrential rains, muddy roads, and flying monkeys! Often storm chasers on the back side of the tornado try to maintain possition between the tornado and the RFD... not too close to either (hence the "We gotta keep moving people" quote). The "Business" warehouse in the video was only grazed by the tornado. Still the outer most wind bands were able to do significant damage. Luckily, this tornado touched down between 2 towns keeping destruction to a relative minimum. It could have been much much worst. At the end of the video, telephone lines were draped all the way across the road preventing passage (for non 4-wheel drive vehicles). A spiralling Mesocyclone convecting clear to the tropopause presented the most spectacular storm structure. The supercell continued moving east down I80 for close to 2 hours after dark before dissapating. The first half of this event tornadic event can be seen here... www.youtube.com

Tornado Warning (Aurora, Colorado) June 7, 2009

Tornado sirens going off during a tornado warning in Aurora, Colo. The sirens are giving an "all clear" warning at the end of the video, except for the distant T-bolt sirens heard in the distance. UPDATE: There has been alot of debate of what siren this is. Most all of Aurora has the Whelen 3016 sirens, which look nothing like this multi-direction siren. This is the ONLY siren like this in Aurora. If you would like to see this siren in person, it is behind Sable Elemetary School.

The Omaha Weather Explorers Post 999 went storm chasing on June 17, 2009 with an initial target of Hastings, NE. We saw 4 tornadoes this day associated with a long-lived supercell that started near Pleasanton, NE. The strongest, and final, tornado occurred just before dark West of Aurora, NE. We shot this video North of exit 324 off I-80. I stepped away from the tripod to shoot some stills just when the 30-35 mph inflow winds knocked the tripod over. Camera was thankfully ok. Won't make that mistake again.
Tornadoes West of Aurora, Nebraska - 6/17/09

A series of four tornadoes touched down west of Aurora, NE during my 2009 storm chasing trip. The first three were small and dissipated quickly, but the fourth was a violent EF2 wedge tornado that lifted before striking downtown Aurora. Structure damage was reported and train cars were flipped over. No injuries reported. We were the first chasers on the scene with this storm and video of the first three tornadoes has not aired on TV due to this. Alister Chapman is a freelance film maker that specialises in filming some of natures most extreme and spectacular events. In the winter months you'll find him in the artic enduring temperatures as low as -36c (-33f) fiming the northern lights. Then in the spring he travels the great plains of the USA seeking out severe thunderstorms and tornadoes. The summer means monsoon time in Arizona which brings incredible thunderstorms and then it's hurricane season. Alister shoots all his material in full HD using Sony XDCAM cameras as this allows him to shoot slow motion and timelapse. In over 3 years of using XDCAM HD and XDCAM EX, despite the harsh conditions he has yet to loose a clip, this year he will be using a pair of XDCAM EX's to film everything in 3D!

Aurora Colorado Tornado Warning 4/11/12

There was a reported funnel cloud north of the Montbello area close to Denver International Airport. Adams, Arapahoe, and Denver Country were all under tornado warning. The sirens sounded for the warning, then performed the whoop (all clear) tone about ten minutes later. The sirens are a bit quiet because I believe one of the sirens close to my house is not working, possibly a 3016. You can also hear my neighbors rottweiler howling at the sirens. Hopefully I can get a better tornado warning in the summer.
