Now the situation has become a standoff as villagers have kicked out both local officials and police. That came after the suspicious death of one villager in police custody. Here's the latest. The over twenty-thousand residents of the village of Wukan in south China's Guangdong Province have expelled all local Communist Party authorities, including police, and blocked road access to the village. The British newspaper The Telegraph was able to get a journalist on the ground in Wukan on Tuesday. Malcom Moore called the current incident the first time on record that the Party has "lost all control" in a situation of "open revolt." This marks the latest escalation in an ongoing confrontation between villagers and local Communist Party officials they've called corrupt and abusive. For three months, Wukan residents have been staging occasional large-scale protests against a longstanding series of abuses committed by local Party officials. The villagers' biggest grievance was corrupt officials profiting from illegally selling the villagers' land. The current intensified protest, including the expelling of all police and officials, came after the death in Party custody of Xue Jinbo. It's all hands to the pump in Christchurch as residents prepare themselves for yet another post-quake clean-up. Authorities on the ground in Christchurch are in overdrive keeping up with a terrifying afternoon in the city. Christchurch's deputy Mayor Ngaire Button said a Civil Defence emergency centre has been set up. Button said the council will wait to roll out more response initiatives until the full damage of the quakes has been assessed. There have been four earthquakes over 5.0 on the Richter scale in the Canterbury region. The first was 5.8 and hit at 1.58pm today, followed by a 5.3 quake at 2.06pm. At 2.14pm there was a 4.2 magnitude one but the largest was 6.0 and struck at 3.18pm. It was followed by a 5.0 magnitude jolt at 3.50pm, and continuing. Prime Minister John Key has issued a statement saying his heart goes out to the people of Christchurch and Canterbury. Key said this afternoon it will be frightening and disheartening for them to be experiencing even more earthquakes of such a magnitude, particularly this close to the holiday season. He said residents can be confident that the authorities are onto the situation and government resources stand ready to assist wherever needed. A large metallic ball fell out of the sky on a remote grassland in Namibia, prompting baffled authorities to contact NASA and the European space agency. The hollow ball with a circumference of 1.1 metres (43 inches) was found near a village in the north of the country some 750 kilometres (480 miles) from the capital Windhoek, according to police forensics director Paul Ludik. Locals had heard several small explosions a few days beforehand, he said. With a diameter of 35 centimetres (14 inches), the ball has a rough surface and appears to consist of "two halves welded together". It was made of a "metal alloy known to man" and weighed six kilogrammes (13 pounds), said Ludik. It was found 18 metres from its landing spot, a hole 33 centimetres deep and 3.8 meters wide.
