This rap was written for Pecha Kucha Night (PKN) Cardiff; bearing in mind that this year (2010) is the International Year of Biodiversity (IYB). PechaKucha Night was devised in Tokyo in February 2003 as an event for young designers to meet, network, and show their work in public. It has turned into a massive celebration, with events happening in hundreds of cities around the world, inspiring creatives worldwide. Drawing its name from the Japanese term for the sound of "chit chat", it rests on a presentation format that is based on a simple idea: 20 images x 20 seconds. It's a format that makes presentations concise, and keeps things moving at a rapid pace. The idea behind 'Life - An Autobiography' is that I wanted to somehow give an account of the history and evolution of life, as a little salute to IYB. I realised that any account I gave was kind of like writing about the trials and tribulations life encountered for me to be born. It was a story of how I got here! When scientists develop and use techniques to find out about the past, they are providing humanity with a tiny bit of a story. Basically, life took about 3.6 Billion years to develop all the diversity we can see around us now, and despite major set backs, it seems that life as a whole is pretty resilient. This rap regards Life as a whole thing (ie The sum of all it's parts). This rap is told from Life's perspective, and is my version of what Life might include if it were to write an Autobiography. Idi Amin Dada (c. 1925[A] -- 16 August 2003) was a military leader and President of Uganda from 1971 to 1979. Amin joined the British colonial regiment, the King's African Rifles, in 1946, and eventually held the rank of Major General and Commander of the Ugandan Army before taking power in the military coup of January 1971, deposing Milton Obote. This was my 2nd student film from Concordia University. It has won many awards and been shown all over canada and the US as well as Europe and continues to touch the lives who experience viewing it. It was an important film to make then, and the message is still important now. Mental illness is a real disease, and people with mental illness often suffer in silence, because there is a HUGE STIGMA ATTACHED TO MENTAL ILLNESS IN ALL ITS FORMS. This is my story, my history, my documentation of what life is like for somebody who suffers from manic depression and what the genesis of a mental breakdown really looks like. Please excuse the quality as it is a copy from an old 16mm film copy.
