This is my first test of the WLX Pro wireless system. Shot inside and at a max distance of 70' with a Kodak Zi8. This is RAW video. Did not use a mono to stereo splitter but, will in the future to get sound on both sides. This mic is about $ 140. and takes 2 9v batteries to run for field work.

Lots of new equipment to one up my recordings and to prepare for Florida Metrocon event. 4 of my new items came in the mail today so here is an unboxing to tell you a bit about those items and to let you know that full reviews of these items will be comming soon. Azden EX503 is a omni-directional lapel microphone that is pretty cheap but gets the job done, does include a wind screen and a clip. Note you need a device that can give this microphone power to work as it is a condenser microphone. The Zoom H2N is a really high end field recorder, this is what I got to record my audio since my camcorder does not have an external microphone jack. It was cheaper to get this than to upgrade my camcorder and the audio will be much higher quality to boot. Not only does it just use external mics but has several high quality mics built into the device so its more than ready to record on its own, and can even be used as a usb microphone for your computer/laptop. The Zoom H2N accessory pack is just some essentials you probably want to go along with the H2N to make it easier to use and add flexability. Finally the Yeti Pro is the monster of all usb computer mics. It has full 24bit 192khz recording capablites, and builts onto the former yeti (non pro) by adding XLR outputs so you can use it in a studio setting with hardware mixers and connections. It still has the 4 diverse recording patterns, and the same base and connections for headphone monitoring and a on mic mute button. It has a <b>...</b>

This is a quick audio test with the canon 7d using the rode video mic, the azden SGM and Zoom h4. Syncing the audio up ended up being very easy. Off board audio seems to be the best way to go for now.

If you have a Sanyo Xacti VPC-HD2000, save your money. The builit-in mic is one of the better ones and lightyears better than the Azden SMX-10. The built-in mic picks up both high and low sounds better and even the electronic wind reduction is impressive. The only advantage of the Azden SMX-10 is the reduction of background noise coming from the side and rear. I need to mention that the Azden occasionally caused a buzzing noise. Although I'm impressed with the built-in mic, I may try out other mics from Audio Technica, Rode and maybe Hama.

This is number 3 in a series of tests using a Sony HDR-FX7 camera and two shotgun microphones; Audio-Technica ATR55 and Azden SGM-1X. Using both on camera at different distances and then on a boom (C-Stand). I did this test for myself as well as I was curious of the differences in the two mics. What I learned is that the Azden SGM-1x is a lot hotter (louder, about 2+ times the volume) than the ATR55 and I wasn't prepared nor setup for that as I set the camera's volume to handle the ATR55. I'm not sure if it's just the mic or the Shure A94F transformer XLR to 1/8" adapter as I don't have a non-transformer adapter to compare it to. So, just know that the distortion you hear with the SGM-1X is because the volume was set too high -- except for the redo at the end.

The quality is amazing, and it can shoot in 1080p. This is just a test video using the camcorder outside in the winter, inside, in low light, and I also tested the microphone. For some reason I was getting some very very annoying hiss in the video. This is a simple test of the Sony WCS-999R wireless microphone with the Azden WR-Pro. I have replaced the clip-on mic on the Sony with the Olympus ME-15 mic. The Sony-WCS999R plus the Olympus ME-15 seemed to me to give the best audio and best audio levels so I have picked the Sony for my filming.

This is for anyone interested in the different mics available for your consumer camcorder. I used a Canon HV 30 camcorder for testing the Azden SMX-10 and Rode VideoMic. Also note that my "bonus" footage filming at 60 fps was converted by YouTube (not by me) to 30 fps.

Finally some great audio equipment for use with our great quality DSLRs. This kit comes with a directional microphone as well as a wireless transmiter that has a 100 ft working distance. I was very happy with the directional mic but not sold on the hands free mic. Luckily you can use both wirelessly.

Amateur video comparing the audio quality of the Azden SMX-10, Rode Videomic Pro, and Nikon D5100 internal microphone. I was trying to discern the difference in both quality and "uses" for the different types. The Azden being an $85 stereo "directional microphone" and the Rode being a $229 mono shotgun mic. The Azden is using the AGC on the camera while the Rode is set to +20db on the mic and the lowest sensitivity on the camera to reduce hiss. This isn't meant to be complete or comprehensive. Mostly just contains audio samples from different positions on the three mics. I apologize in advance for the abrupt ending and the lack of focus at various points of the film... luckily I'm not showcasing the video capabilities of the D5100 or my editing abilities.
