Fall of the Aztec Empire: Return of the Serpent God of the Cross. Mayan Calendar

2012: The Fall of the Aztecs.Mayan Calendar. The Serpent god of the Cross Returns. Part 1. BrainMind.com A documentary film by Rhawn Joseph, Ph.D. We are commonly asked about the buildings which remain standing. Most were destroyed. What we see are those in remote areas and those which were so incredibly massive in size it was impossible to destroy them, even with the use of cannons. However, the entire Aztec capital was destroyed, and in its place is the capital of Mexico, Mexico City, and its hundreds of Catholic churches and cathedrals. We are also asked if we believe the world will end in 2012? The answer is "no." The next cycle of the Mayan calendar ends on 2012. Does this mean the Maya's believed the world end on 2012? No. It means the calendar ends. Yet, there is also a warning, and we must learn from the past, so let those with eyes, see. Part 2: Lost Continents, can be viewed at: www.youtube.com

The Last Aztec 1/10

The Last Aztec Part 1 Booker Prize winner DBC Pierre returns to the Mexico of his youth to explore the downfall of one of the world's greatest civilisations -- the Aztecs ruled by the emperor Moctezuma II who were defeated by a small force of Spaniards under Hernán Cortés. In the early 16th century, the Aztec empire was at the height of its power. The emperor Moctezuma II (also known as Montezuma) ruled from the great imperial city of Tenochtitlan in the Valley of Mexico -- site of present-day Mexico City -- and collected an unending stream of tribute from neighbouring city-states. Aztec armies were feared. Hundreds of thousands of humans were sacrificed to Aztec gods in elaborate rituals.

Engineering an Empire - The Aztecs 1/5

Engineering an Empire - The Aztecs Part 1 In less than 200 years the Aztec's transformed themselves from a band of wandering nomads to the greatest civilization the New World had ever known. What records remain of this amazing feat indicate they did it through brilliant military campaigns and by ingeniously applying technology to master the harsh environment they faced. They built their capital city where no city should have been possible: in the middle of a lake. The Aztec also practiced human sacrifice on an unprecedented scale and made many enemies. By the time the Spaniards landed they had no trouble recruiting tribal allies to destroy the Aztecs. Watch with host Peter Weller as we examine the architecture and infrastructure behind the New World's greatest, and last, indigenous society.

Ancient Aztec - Recreated Sounds

Scientists were fascinated by the ghostly find: a human skeleton buried in an Aztec temple with a clay, skull-shaped whistle in each bony hand. But no one blew into the noisemakers for nearly 15 years. When someone finally did, the shrill, windy screech made the spine tingle. If death had a sound, this was it. Roberto Velazquez believes the Aztecs played this mournful wail from the so-called Whistles of Death before they were sacrificed to the gods. The 66-year-old mechanical engineer has devoted his career to recreating the sounds of his pre-Columbian ancestors, producing hundreds of replicas of whistles, flutes and wind instruments unearthed in Mexico's ruins. Among Velazquez's replicas are those that emit a strange cacophony so strong that their frequency nears the maximum range of human hearing. Chronicles by Spanish priests from the 1500s described the Aztec and Mayan sounds as sad and doleful, although these may have been only what was played in their presence. Velazquez meticulously researches each noisemaker before replicating it. He travels across Mexico to examine newly unearthed wind instruments, some dating back to 400 BC and shaped like animals or deities. He studies reliefs and scans 500-year-old Spanish chronicles.

Conquistadors - The fall of the Aztecs 1/5 (CC)

Conquistadors - The fall of the Aztecs Part 1 (Spanish CC) In the decade before the Spanish arrived in Mexico, Aztec Emperor Montezuma II and his people were filled with a sense of foreboding. A series of evil omens had foretold of calamities to come. A fiery comet crossed the sky. The temple of Huitzilopochtli, the god of war, burst into flames. The Lake of Mexico boiled and rose, flooding into houses. A weeping woman passed by in the middle of the night, crying "My children, we must flee far away from this city!" Fishermen discovered a bird that wore a strange mirror in the crown of its head. Montezuma looked into the mirror and saw a distant plain, with people making war against each other and riding on the backs of animals resembling deer. An agitated Montezuma demanded that his soothsayers explain the meaning of these dire signs and was told that they prophesied the destruction of his kingdom. In fact, Montezuma had reason to be fearful - the Spanish had settled in Hispaniola and Cuba and were making their way toward his empire. The Spanish had made several expeditions to the nearby Yucatan in 1517 and had returned with wonderous tales of a high-cultured Mayan civilization and gold riches. The news of these discoveries made an electrifying impression on the Spanish colonists in Cuba. Among these was Hernán Cortés, Chief Magistrate of Santiago. The Spanish governor of Cuba, Diego de Velásquez, told Cortés that he would provide two or three ships if Cortés would find ...

Mexico: Aztecs - 22 Nov 07

In the heart of Mexico City archaeologists have made a major new discovery-- the tomb of an Aztec king. Mexico's Native heritage is evident everywhere one looks-- from the ancient monuments in the countryside, to the magnificent object preserved in its museums, to the faces of its people. Yet Mexico has an often complex relationship with its past. Al Jazeera's senior Washington correspondent Rob Reynolds reports from Mexico City.

Engineering an Empire - The Aztecs

The Aztec people were certain ethnic groups of central Mexico, particularly those groups who spoke the Nahuatl language and who dominated large parts of Mesoamerica from the 14th to 16th centuries. "Aztec" (Nahuatl pronunciation: [astekaʔ]) is the Nahuatl word for "people from Aztlan", a mythological place for the Nahuatl-speaking culture of the time, and later adopted as the word to define the Mexica people. Often the term "Aztec" refers exclusively to the Mexica people of Tenochtitlan (now the location of Mexico City), situated on an island in Lake Texcoco, who referred to themselves as Mexica Tenochca or Colhua-Mexica. Sometimes the term also includes the inhabitants of Tenochtitlan's two principal allied city-states, the Acolhuas of Texcoco and the Tepanecs of Tlacopan, who together with the Mexica formed the Aztec Triple Alliance which controlled what is often known as "the Aztec Empire". In other contexts, Aztec may refer to all the various city states and their peoples, who shared large parts of their ethnic history and cultural traits with the Mexica, Acolhua and Tepanecs, and who often also used the Nahuatl language as a lingua franca. In this meaning it is possible to talk about an Aztec civilization including all the particular cultural patterns common for most of the peoples inhabiting Central Mexico in the late postclassic period. From the 13th century, the Valley of Mexico was the heart of Aztec civilization: here the capital of the Aztec Triple Alliance ...
